Jane exclaimed in disbelief, "What? Ella's been acquitted?"
Beside her, Josie whipped her head around in surprise.
Steven's voice was heavy with a sincere apology as he said, "I'm sorry. We've done everything in our power, but the police currently lack sufficient concrete evidence to convict Ella. As per legal procedure, she had to be released."
Jane said, "But the police told me earlier that Ella was very likely to be convicted."
Steven explained, "That was indeed the case before, but the situation has changed. The suspect, Jasmine, apprehended by police, suddenly altered her confession.
"She took full responsibility for all charges, admitting she was the one who instructed Scott to retaliate against you; it had nothing to do with Ella."
Jane knew Jasmine was one of Ella's closest confidantes and a pivotal figure in this case. According to the information the police had previously disclosed to her, it was Jasmine's accusation that implicated Ella in the case.
She said, "I barely know Jasmine, and we've got no beef. There's no way she'd have any motive to retaliate against me."
Steven replied, "Yes. According to Jasmine's testimony, she has always been jealous of you. She admitted she had a crush on a man named Colin, your ex-boyfriend.
"Because of this, she held a grudge against you throughout college and paid Scott to get back at you. At first, she tried to frame Ella out of fear of going to jail.
"Now, unable to bear her guilty conscience any longer, she has finally come clean to the police."
Jane thought, 'Guilty conscience? Give me a break. Yeah, right, as if that's not just another excuse from Jasmine. I know Jasmine, but I never knew about her having a thing for Colin.
'Clearly, Jasmine was bribed by the Judd family. So when it mattered most, she took the fall for everything, letting Ella walk away scot-free.
'But the Clark family is affluent. They'd never let Jasmine take the blame for nothing. What on earth did the Judd family offer them to make Jasmine take the fall for Ella?
But now, none of Jane's questions mattered anymore. That morning, Ella had already strutted out of the detention center with her head held high, as if nothing had ever happened.
After hanging up, Jane pressed her trembling fingertips to her brow, a dull throb pulsing at her temples.
She was so angry that her head felt like it was about to split. She was shaking all over, and it was as if every last bit of strength had been sucked right out of her.
Jane used to think that even if Ella had completely scammed her and left her in a terrible state, Ella would get what she deserved and have to face legal consequences herself.
She thought, 'If Ella could finally be brought to justice, at least it would mean there's still some justice in this world, and no villain would go unpunished.
'But now, I not only had my ring snatched and got scammed out of 60 thousand, but I also had to watch helplessly as Ella walked out of detention like nothing had happened, living her best life. Why is the world so unfair to me?'
Beside her, Josie, who had caught some of the phone conversation, couldn't help but comfort Jane. She said, "Jane, don't get so worked up. You'll make yourself sick.
"At worst, we'll go confront Ella right now and make her return your money. And that ring, she's giving that back too. Don't worry, I'll get my brother involved to make sure Ella..."
As she spoke, Josie pulled out her phone. Before she could even find Warren's contact, a new post on Twitter instantly caught her eye.
She handed her phone to Jane and exclaimed, "Jane, look. Ella just tweeted."
Ella had just posted a photo.
In the photo, she was dressed to the nines, exuding elegance and confidence. Adorned in dazzling designer jewelry and an exclusive haute couture gown, she smiled serenely at the camera, radiating effortless elegance.
Below the photo, she captioned with obvious gloating: [Love my makeup and hair tonight. Best part? Attending the family party with my man.]
Below the photo, she deliberately added a location tag, just to show off exactly where she was.
The location tag proudly displayed that Ella was currently at the hall of the Noble Grand Hotel, owned by the Drake Group.
