Before Josie could even react, Jane had already bolted out like a whirlwind.
Josie called out, "Hey, Jane! Wait up. Where are you going?"
By the time Josie caught up, all she could see was Jane's taxi speeding away into the distance.
Catching a cab was always tough in these suburban outskirts. Jane had just managed to hail a taxi by sheer luck. But Josie wasn't that fortunate.
Just as Josie frantically pulled out her phone to book a ride-hailing car, William rushed out.
Holding the box they'd left behind in their rush, William said, "Josie, your friend left this behind."
Josie whirled around, shooting William a furious glare. She snapped, "Why even bring that? Keep your own counterfeit junk."
William was at a loss for words.
Sitting in the taxi, Jane was consumed by a single thought: getting to the hotel to make Ella pay back what she owed.
She thought, 'How dare Ella get away scot-free and just walk out of the detention center? How dare she strut around and show off her wealth on social media?'
Jane had reached her breaking point. For the past year, she had swallowed every insult and endured it all, always backing down to keep the peace.
She believed that if she just kept to herself and worked hard to build a decent life, no one would bother her. That way, she and her mother could live peacefully together.
But she never expected they would have gone way too far.
Every backstabber who'd ever wronged her, every menacing sneer, they all flashed through Jane's mind in rapid succession. Those she once called family, Johnson, Lily, and Ella, were the very ones who, in the end, forced her into utter despair.
Just then, the taxi driver said, "Miss, we've arrived at the Noble Grand Hotel." His announcement snapped Jane out of her bitter resentment.
Jane lifted her eyes to the opulent hotel facade outside the window, her gaze burning with stubborn fury.
She said, "Thanks." Then she paid the fare, got out of the taxi, and strode straight into the hotel's second-floor ballroom.
The ballroom was packed with men and women dressed to the nines in designer gowns and tuxedos. It was a dazzling display of wealth and elegance.
Even though Jane was dressed in designer clothes purchased at Luke's behest, she still stood out compared to the others. Her purple wool sweater and simple jeans clashed starkly with the opulent atmosphere of the hall.
Just then, a hotel security guard spotted Jane. He said, "Excuse me, miss, how did you get in here? This is an invitation-only event. Please leave right now."
The security guard stepped forward, seized Jane by the arm, and, without so much as a word, began forcibly escorting her out.
Jane said, "Wait, I'm here to see..." Her words caught in her throat because she spotted Ella up ahead in the crowd.
Ella was dressed in an exquisite pink designer gown. She was being escorted like royalty, surrounded by fawning admirers as she made her entrance.
Jane ripped her arm free from the security guard's grip and, without a moment's hesitation, marched straight toward Ella, her eyes blazing with determination. She called out, "Ella."
Distantly, Ella thought she heard Jane's voice calling from behind her. She felt a chill running down her spine. She thought, 'Was that Jane's voice? I must be imagining things.
'Someone like Jane, that lowly nobody, would never get a chance to appear at an exclusive event like this.'
Ella was attending the Drake family party as Luke's girlfriend. Just moments ago, she greeted a bunch of Luke's relatives. Even Yvonne praised Ella for being so polite and well-behaved. All thanks to the obsidian ring in her hand.
Thanks to the ring, Luke had mistaken Ella for the woman he'd been with at the exclusive club that night.
Of course, Ella knew perfectly well that the woman wasn't her at all; it was Jane. She thought, 'So what? Someone as dim-witted as Jane would never even get the chance to meet a man as high-status and powerful as Luke.
'And Jane would never know the ring she is holding is just a fake. Even if I impersonate Jane's identity, there's no way anyone would ever find out.'
Suddenly, a voice shattered Ella's smug reverie. To her utter shock, Jane, the last person she ever expected to see here, was marching toward her with steely resolve.
Jane stormed forward, eyes blazing. She shouted, "Ella, you fraud. Give me back my ring and the 60 thousand you stole from me. Hand it over, now!"
