At the sudden sight of Jane, Ella froze, rooted to the spot. She gasped, "Jane, why are you here?" But the next second, she came to her senses.
She snapped, "What are you talking about, 60 thousand? Jane, how dare you come here demanding money? Get out! This is no place for someone like you."
Ella's heart pounded with dread. Overwhelmed by panic, all she could do was feign innocence. Her instincts were screaming to get Jane out of there immediately.
More and more guests were gathering around them, casting disapproving glances at the commotion.
Ella's heart raced with terror. She was afraid that Jane's sudden appearance might alert the Drake family. Even more terrifying was the thought that Jane might run into Luke, who was already on his way.
Ella, her voice trembling with panic, frantically beckoned to the staff behind her. She said, "Someone is making a scene here. Get her out, now!"
Jane seized Ella by the wrist and warned her in a low, dangerous voice, "Ella, don't even think about making me leave until you hand over what you owe me today.
"Wait, why do you smell like Larmes Sacrées Éternelles? Didn't you say you spilled that perfume? God, every word out of your mouth is a lie."
Jane frowned as she caught a whiff of the familiar, overpowering scent from Ella. She thought, 'How could Ella lie effortlessly, not even blinking an eye?
'How could I have been so naive back then, believing every lie that came out of her mouth?'
Ella stammered, "What are you talking about? What perfume? What do you mean I owe you something? I don't know what you're talking about. I'm completely innocent."
Jane glared at Ella and snapped, "Innocent? Don't kid yourself. You think you can bribe Jasmine with those dirty tricks and play the victim, getting away with it?
"Even if the law can't touch you, I won't let you off the hook. Give me back my ring and the 60 thousand dollars you owe me, or this isn't over, not by a long shot."
Without hesitation, Jane yanked Ella's long hair back, checking if she was wearing the ring as a pendant around her neck. But what she saw was an entirely different luxury jewelry set.
Then she bent down, seized Ella's hands, and turned them over, inspecting each of her fingers. Finding no ring, she then snatched Ella's handbag and began rifling through its contents.
Ella shrieked in panic, "What are you doing? Have you lost your mind, Jane? Help! There's a thief here. Give me back my bag right now."
At that moment, an elegant and imposing noblewoman emerged from the crowd. She snapped, "Enough! Who dares to cause a scene here? Guards, go protect Ms. Judd now. And stop that madwoman."
Yvonne, the city's illustrious high-society matriarch, stepped forward and, with commanding authority, directed the Drake family's bodyguards to rescue Ella.
The hulking bodyguards manhandled Jane with brutish force. With a single, careless shove, they sent Jane sprawling to the ground and snatched Ella's handbag right out of her grasp.
Jane's back slammed hard against the icy marble floor, pain knitting her brows together.
Seeing her handbag retrieved, Ella was overwhelmed with sickening relief. The obsidian ring was tucked away in the hidden pocket of her handbag. She'd brought it today specifically to show Luke.
She thought, 'Thank God! That was close. Jane, that little bitch, almost got it.'
Tears streaming down her face, Ella clung to Yvonne. She trembled so violently she seemed about to collapse, a perfect picture of terrified helplessness. She whimpered, "Mrs. Drake, I'm so scared."
Yvonne comforted Ella, "It's alright now, Ella. Don't be afraid, I am here."
The Drake elders' foremost concern was Luke's marriage prospects. And Samuel valued heirs above all.
Yvonne thought, 'As long as Luke married a socially suitable match and carried on the family line, he could solidify his legitimate claim to the Drake empire against the covetous ambitions of the branch families.
'Oddly enough, for all these years, Luke had shown zero interest in women and flat-out rejected every marriage arrangement the family made for him.
'After all these years, he's finally shown interest in Ella. Even though Ella's pedigree is nowhere near a match for the Drake family's, at least she comes from a decent background and appears perfectly proper.
'I must protect Ella. I will never allow her to be wronged.'
Yvonne frowned and asked, "Ella, who is this madwoman? How did you get involved with someone like her?"
Hearing this, a jolt of panic shot through Ella. She thought, 'No way can I let the Drake family know about Jane.'
