Ella replied, "Sorry, Mrs. Drake, she is my cousin. I have no idea how she found her way here. I'll have her leave immediately."
Ella thought, 'I can't afford to look too harsh or heartless in front of Yvonne. But I can't let Jane stay here, either.' So she brushed it off with a few hasty excuses and quickly motioned for the bodyguards to escort Jane out.
Jane wrenched her arm free from the bodyguard's grip. Wincing from the sharp pain in her back, she snapped, "Don't touch me. Ella, give back the 60 thousand you swindled from me, and return everything else you owe.
"I don't need you to throw me out, I'll leave on my own. But if you don't, even if you beat me to death right here, I won't budge an inch."
Ella said, "Jane, why make things so awkward? Let's talk about this when we get home."
"Ella, do you owe her 60 thousand?" Yvonne exclaimed in shock.
Ella's face paled, wishing she could strangle Jane right then and there. She replied, "No, Mrs. Drake, it's not like that. I guess I have no choice but to air our dirty laundry in public. My cousin is in that kind of business."
Ella's words sent shockwaves through the crowd.
Ella continued, "My aunt's private life was always promiscuous, so her husband's family kicked her out. With such a role model, of course, my cousin turned out just as disgraceful.
"She was expelled from school at a young age because of her chaotic private life. She never even finished her studies and ended up working in the sex trade.
"Our family may be well-off, but we can only help in emergencies, not support them forever. My parents have lent them money again and again, but it's never enough. Even if we were a money tree, we couldn't sustain such a bottomless pit of relatives."
Ella sniffled. Her voice trembled with grievance as she added, "So now we've stopped giving them money, but my cousin keeps insisting we still owe her 60 thousand. I never thought she'd be so shameless as to come here and demand it in public."
Jane snapped, "Ella, how dare you say that? You have no shame. It's bad enough you slander me, but how could you slander my mom too? You know she was framed."
Jane trembled with rage. She lunged at Ella, wanting to tear that lying mouth off her face. She thought, 'Mom is Ella's biological aunt. How could Ella use the one rumor that hurt Mom most, stabbing her in the back?'
Before Jane could even reach Ella, the burly bodyguard sent Jane sprawling to the ground once again.
Jane was knocked sideways, crashing hard into the nearby champagne tower.
Screams erupted instantly as the tower collapsed.
Shards of broken glass and rivers of champagne rained down on Jane, thoroughly soaking her purple wool sweater. The sticky liquid streamed from her shoulders down to her feet. She was left completely drenched and humiliated, a total mess.
Suddenly, Jane felt a strange, dull ache in her left ankle, as if an old injury that had barely healed was acting up again. The pain was so intense that her whole body trembled, leaving her unable to stand.
Ella, completely unscathed, was hiding behind Yvonne, sniffling pitifully in a calculated display of vulnerability.
She cried, "Mrs. Drake, what should we do? Isn't this a bit too harsh? My cousin may be in the sex trade, but after all, she's still just a young woman.
"She didn't mean to cause trouble. Yes, she made a mess and ruined the party, but please, could you give her another chance? Please don't just hand her over to the police like this."
Ella's words once again reminded everyone in the room of what Jane was allegedly involved in.
One guest whispered, "No wonder she's decked out in designer clothes. She must be in the trade. Dressed to kill, isn't she?"
Another chimed in, "How else is she supposed to snag sugar daddies? Just another gold digger. Disgusting."
Several men in the crowd leered as Jane's champagne-soaked clothes clung to her, accentuating her curves. Their gazes turned predatory, taking on a lewd glint.
Yvonne's eyes flashed with undisguised disgust. She said, "Ella, you've just reminded me. This kind of trash belongs in the police station. Let the officers teach her a proper lesson.
"Guards, hand her over and tell the police she came here to publicly assault Luke's future wife."
