The moment Jane heard Ella had the nerve to bring up the police station, she lost all reason in her fury. She was so blinded by rage that she didn't even register the words "Luke's future wife," nor did she care about her disheveled state.
Gritting her teeth against the pain in her ankle, Jane was determined to drag Ella down with her, no matter the cost. She shouted, "Police? Ella, you've got some nerve bringing up the police here.
"I heard you're here today with your precious boyfriend. So, do your boyfriend and his family even know you were just interrogated at the police station recently? Do they know you only got out of the detention center this morning?"
Yvonne stared at Ella in shock. She asked, "What? Ella, you just got out of detention this morning?" She thought, 'How could the woman Luke chooses to marry have been in a detention center?'
The surrounding guests immediately buzzed with whispers.
One exclaimed, "Wait, this Ms. Judd just got out of detention?"
Another whispered, "What on earth did she do to end up in a place like that?"
Someone said, "Who knows? But no one ends up in a place like that for anything good. Why on earth would Mr. Drake choose a woman like her as his girlfriend?"
Ella panicked at the accusations, her voice trembling as she stammered, "I didn't. I've never been in a detention center." Her eyes darted around in panic, her mind blank. She had no idea how to explain herself.
Seeing her hard-won good impression in front of Yvonne about to be ruined, Ella was so anxious that she felt like crying. She said, "Mrs. Drake, please don't listen to her malicious slander. How could I possibly have ever been to a place like that?
"She's only saying this because I refused to lend her money. She's holding a grudge and deliberately framing me. Please, you can't believe her."
Jane snapped, "Think this is slander? Just check the detention center records. It'll be crystal clear. Ella was locked up there for quite a while; the police must still have her incarceration records."
Jane decided to throw caution to the wind. She knew that, given the situation today, she definitely wouldn't be able to get back the 60 thousand and the ring. She thought, 'Even so, I won't let Ella have an easy time of it.
'Ella's whole world now revolves around her boyfriend and his family. If I can tear off her mask in front of them, I won't care about the money. Even if I never get it back, at least I'll have settled the score with Ella.'
Yvonne's face darkened, suspicion flickering in her eyes as she studied Ella.
Jane decided to go for the jugular. She added, "Weren't you just threatening to send me to the police station? Fine, let's go. While we're there, we can check Ella's incarceration records.
"If you dare come with me, the truth will be out for all to see."
Ella panicked. She stammered, "No. I can't go. I just can't."
Just then, a deep, icy voice cut through from behind the crowd, coldly silencing Ella's futile excuses.
The voice said, "There's no need. I trust my girlfriend. Besides, the police records won't contain a single incriminating detail about Ella."
Luke stepped out from the crowd. He was dressed in an impeccably tailored black suit that radiated opulence. His icy, aristocratic demeanor instantly commanded the attention of every guest in the room.
One person greeted, "Mr. Drake."
Another said, "It's Mr. Drake. He is here."
Someone said, "Good day, Mr. Drake."
The moment Ella saw Luke, the color returned to her deathly pale face as relief washed over her, like a prisoner granted an unexpected reprieve.
Jane, still collapsed on the floor, was so stunned she forgot to breathe.
Luke strode past Jane without so much as a glance, treating her like a stranger. With an icy expression, he strode over to stand beside Yvonne and Ella.
Yvonne frowned and called, "Luke."
Luke replied, "It's nothing, Mom. Just a minor misunderstanding." As he spoke, his indifferent gaze drifted over Jane's pale, stunned face.
Just then, Ella leaned close to Luke and said, "Luke, thank goodness you're here. I was so scared just now."
