Watching Ella publicly cling to Luke's arm, hiding behind him like some innocent victim, Jane felt as if she'd been slapped hard across the face twice.
Only then did Luke's cold, penetrating gaze turn toward Jane, as if deigning to grant her a glance, fixing on her face. His look was icy and indifferent, as if he had never known her at all.
Luke said coldly, "Miss, you must have mistaken Ella for someone else. I don't know why you chose today of all days to cause a scene, but let me make one thing clear. My girlfriend, Ella, would never have any criminal record with the police."
Jane was stunned. She thought, 'Girlfriend? So he's Ella's boyfriend. How could that be? Of course, the Drake family. I should have realized sooner.
'No wonder he insisted on keeping our marriage a secret. He already had a girlfriend.'
Seeing Luke's strikingly familiar, chiseled features and hearing his deep, magnetic voice, Jane felt as if she had been nailed to the spot, too stunned to move.
Luke's words made it sound like he only picked the best of the best. To be his girlfriend, one had to be one in a million, with an impeccable family background and a spotless record.
There was no way he'd ever go for a woman with a criminal past.
But Jane realized what Luke was telling her. He'd already wiped Ella's record clean. Even if Ella had been in detention, there was no way anyone could find any trace of it now.
At that moment, looking at the familiar yet stern and gloomy face of Luke, Jane felt her heart growing colder bit by bit.
It was as if someone had poured a bucket of icy water over her head, chilling her to the bone in the dead of winter.
She finally understood why Jasmine suddenly changed her testimony and took the fall for Ella, and why a prestigious family like the Clark family could be bought off so easily.
She thought, 'In all of Jovinia, who else but Luke could have the power to pull off something like this? Daniel had said that Luke would personally investigate the case, avenge me, and get me justice.
'Luke had sworn he'd never let the real culprit escape. He would make them face the full force of the law. So is this what Luke called "personal investigation"? Is this the way he avenged me?'
Jane slumped to the floor, feeling her body grow colder inch by inch as all warmth seeped away. Even her mind seemed frozen, unable to form a single thought.
She looked at Luke, who was once so intimately familiar, yet now felt like a stranger. Then she shifted her gaze to Ella, who was clinging to Luke's arm, and the impeccably dressed socialites standing behind them.
As she watched, tears slowly clouded her vision.
Yvonne finally let out a sigh of relief upon hearing Luke's words. She said, "Just as I expected, it was all a misunderstanding.
"The audacity of this woman. With her dirty criminal record, she dares to crash our party and slander Ella. Guards, take this woman to the police station at once. See that she faces the full consequences."
At Yvonne's command, the Drake family's bodyguards immediately closed in to seize Jane.
Seeing the crisis averted, a flash of vicious satisfaction flickered in Ella's eyes. She thought, 'That pathetic little bitch Jane. Does she think she can take me on? In her dreams.'
Suddenly, Luke's icy-cold voice cut through the air once more. He said, "Enough. This isn't worth making a federal case out of. No need to involve the police over trivial matters."
He frowned slightly in clear irritation, his gaze sweeping over Jane.
Seeing that her purple cashmere sweater was soaked with champagne, the wet fabric clinging to her curvy figure and leaving her in a disheveled state, a displeased glint flickered in his eyes.
Luke ordered coldly, "Hayden, escort her out."
Hayden replied, "Yes, Mr. Drake." He caught Luke's meaningful glance and immediately understood what was expected of him. Unlike the other guests present, he was fully aware of Jane's true identity.
Hayden hurried over, his movements deceptively casual yet meticulously careful as he helped Jane to her feet. He whispered, "Ms. Ritter, let's go. Don't provoke Mr. Drake any further."
