Jane spoke; her voice fractured with emotion.
Jane thought, 'If Luke had already decided to marry Ella, why is he still coming to me? Shouldn't he be keeping himself for Ella?'
Luke said, "That's for a year later. Right now, you're my wife. The only one that matters." With those words, Luke pinned Jane deep into the couch, claiming her lips in a kiss that was both domineering and relentless.
The crystal chandelier above swayed violently, making Jane's head spin and her vision blur. Her body burned with growing heat, yet her heart remained frozen in icy detachment.
Jane thought bitterly, 'Just a status with a one-year shelf life, forever hidden from the world. What a joke.' Jane mocked herself bitterly in her mind, even as tears silently slid down from the corners of her eyes.
Two hours later, the restless frustration that had inexplicably risen in Luke finally found release with Jane.
Luke stood by the sofa, languid and sated as he slipped into the suit jacket that Hayden had just brought in. In no time, Luke had reassumed that aloof and aristocratic demeanor he wore in public.
Luke looked down at Jane, asleep on the sofa, her eyes still red from crying. 'She looks so fragile and lovely, it tugs at my heartstrings,' he thought, wanting to protect her.
"No, please." Suddenly, Jane, lying on the sofa, shifted uneasily in her sleep, a frightened whimper escaping her lips.
'Is she having a nightmare? Because of me?' Luke's brows furrowed deeply. The inexplicable sense of irritation he had just released from his chest suddenly gathered back, even more intense and tumultuous than before it had been vented.
Luke knit his brows and instinctively extended his slender fingers to gently brush away the teardrop clinging to Jane's lashes. Only when he realized what he was doing did his fingertips—still damp from her tears—freeze in the air.
"Mr. Drake, the car is ready. We can take Ms. Ritter home now." Just then, Hayden's respectful voice came from outside the door.
The party was still in full swing. He'd already been absent too long. He needed to return immediately. But when Luke looked down at Jane, still whimpering restlessly even in her sleep, his expression darkened.
A few minutes later, the lounge door swung open. Hayden watched as Luke emerged from the VIP lounge, carrying Jane in his arms. Her face was flushed with the telltale pinkish hue of someone who had been crying.
Half of Jane's face was nestled against Luke's broad chest, his strong arms holding her tightly. Draped over her was the suit jacket Luke had just discarded, wrapping her in his warmth and scent.
His jacket swallowed Jane's petite form whole. Only Jane's slender calf and her medicated, slightly swollen ankle still tinged faintly green with ointment peeked out from beneath the jacket.
"Mr. Drake, let me take Ms. Ritter home. Mrs. Drake has been looking for you everywhere." Hayden stepped forward professionally, intending to take Jane from Luke's arms.
It was only natural. Ella hadn't seen Luke for over two hours. With the party in full swing and social obligations piling up, if he didn't return soon, it might cause some trouble.
Hayden told himself he had no ulterior motives. He was simply doing his job to ease Luke's burden. But the moment he took a step forward, Luke's stormy eyes narrowed dangerously. He said coldly, "No need."
"But—"
"Inform Ella, I'm leaving early."
With Luke's clear dismissal, Hayden immediately held his tongue.
Luke's long arms possessively tightened around Jane, adjusting her position in the crook of his arm until she settled more comfortably, securing her firmly against his chest.
Hayden watched as Jane's entire face disappeared into Luke's protective embrace. Hayden bowed his head respectfully. "Understood. I'll have someone inform Mrs. Drake right away. The car is waiting at the back entrance, Mr. Drake. This way, please."
Hayden led the way for Luke. Luke carries Jane with an impassive expression, heading toward the elevator at the other end of the hallway.
Just then, Ella—who had been flitting around the party like a social butterfly—finally noticed that Luke had been absent for quite some time.
Ella couldn't help but fret that some brazen hussy at the party might be throwing herself at Luke. Gathering up her skirts, Ella darted through the crowd, her eyes frantically searching for Luke.
Finally, at the end of the corridor, Ella caught sight of Luke's tall, aloof silhouette. "Luke," Ella called out anxiously.
