Jane's mind drifted back to yesterday, to that VIP lounge.
The last thing Jane remembered was the dazzling crystal chandelier swaying above—and Luke, his brows deeply furrowed, those blue eyes locked on her, cold yet burning with a barely restrained, searing fury.
It was hard to tell what she said that set him off. Luke had been terrifyingly aggressive, especially after the party. When she woke up groggy, it felt like they had another intense, intimate encounter.
A flicker of self-mockery crossed Jane's eyes. Trust Luke to always get his money's worth.
She didn't know how he ended up with Ella, but despite having someone he wanted to marry, he still used her. Even in a one-year engagement, he insisted on extracting her full worth. He was truly a ruthless capitalist.
Jane glanced at the clock—7:30 AM already. With work awaiting her at the studio and a trip to the hospital to sign her mother's surgery consent form, Jane had no mental space left for thoughts of Luke.
As Jane came downstairs, she found Luke already seated at the dining table. Recently, Dwight has needed someone to look after him, so Daniel hasn't been staying at the apartment.
Seeing Jane come down, Luke put down his tablet and looked up. Feeling the cold gaze of the man on her, Jane held her breath and walked confidently towards the dining table.
'With Daniel away, we won't have to keep up this charade of marital bliss at breakfast today,' Jane thought. Without a hint of emotion, Jane moved to take the seat across from Luke.
"Come here." To her surprise, Luke parted his lips and commanded, his tone brooking no argument.
She could clearly see Luke's tall, imposing frame subtly shifting away from the dining table. There was no mistake in what he wanted. He expected her to come over. To sit right in his lap.
Jane's first instinct was to resist. But then she remembered what Luke had said to her yesterday in the lounge. 'I'm not even his real wife. For someone who paid such a hefty price, isn't it only right to butter him up?' she wondered.
Jane sighed, realizing that the recent improvement in her relationship with Luke had made her forget her true position.
At the same time, she reminded herself not to forget that in the eyes of a man like Luke, someone like Ella was probably seen as a treasure. As for her, she was merely a tainted transaction.
"Mr. Drake, would you like me to feed you breakfast?" With practiced obedience, Jane circled the table and settled onto Luke's lap. She even raised her arms to loop around his neck, asking in a voice dripping with saccharine sweetness.
The woman before him played the perfect wife—obedient, accommodating, and even eager to please. This should have satisfied Luke. Yet a razor-sharp displeasure flashed through his cold eyes.
"Jane, I have hands of my own," Luke said, his voice gravelly and ice-cold. The meaning was clear. He didn't need her to feed him.
Back in the VIP lounge yesterday, Luke had been bracing himself for Jane to lash out, to demand answers. But all he got was her retreating into herself, muffling her sobs into silence, shuddering tears. She wouldn't even let herself cry aloud.
He deliberately showed her the harsh reality, deliberately reminded her to know her place. Any other woman in her shoes would probably have broken down in tears, admitting her mistakes and pleading for his help.
Some might even have begged him not to marry Ella, or to help her get revenge. But Jane didn't. Not even a single whimper escaped her lips. She just lowered her eyes and meekly accepted his warning.
It was as if she already knew that no matter how much she begged or pleaded with him, she'd never get what she truly desired. She was like a child who never cried, forever denied the one piece of candy she truly wanted.
Except for that brief moment of losing composure when she first saw Ella yesterday, she meekly accepted the worst possible outcome after that.
Denied by Luke, Jane simply nestled compliantly into his lap, saying nothing more. Jane thought to herself, 'I had no clue why he wanted me in his lap this early. But honestly? I couldn't even be bothered to ask.'
"I'll be away for a few days. If you need anything, contact Hayden." Luke's deep voice rumbled unexpectedly.
