With his long, slender hands, Luke gracefully sliced the perfectly grilled veal sausages on his plate with knife and fork. He spoke, his gaze dropping to study her reaction.
Jane just gave a quiet reply and didn't say anything else. The only thing Jane wanted was to see Ella brought to justice, or at the very least, to make her pay for what she'd done.
'At the very least, I want Ella to return the 60 thousand dollars and the ring she swindled from me,' Jane thought. But she knew it was pointless to even mention any of this. Luke would never help her anyway.
"Behave while I'm away," Luke murmured, his eyes fixed on her obedient little face. "Don't let me hear you've been causing trouble for Ella."
Jane looked down, giving another faint answer. Her expression remained gentle, even more delicate than before, as if Luke's mention of Ella no longer affected her in the slightest. However, the look in her downcast eyes had already turned ice-cold.
She knew that Luke's rare moments of tenderness were all for Ella. Probably, he was afraid that she might tell Ella the truth. That's why he suddenly decided to start the day by holding her close during breakfast, just to keep her calm.
"Open your mouth," Luke frowned slightly as he looked down at the petite woman in his arms. Her excessively docile demeanor was somehow displeasing, and he just couldn't shake the feeling that something was off.
Luke hated it when the woman he kept like some docile pet showed that kind of expression. He pinched her chin. Seeing Jane obediently open her mouth, he casually popped a piece of sliced veal sausage from the plate into her mouth.
Luke's hand-feeding her took Jane completely by surprise. Jane froze for a moment, caught off guard, before remembering to swallow the sizzling, savory bite Luke had just fed her.
"How does it taste?" His thumb brushed across Jane's chin, his eyes deepening as they lingered on her lips, still glistening with traces of food. He asked in a low voice.
"Delicious." Jane nodded, and indeed it was. Mandy's cooking was actually quite good. She couldn't understand why Luke was so picky on a regular basis, or if he was deliberately trying to torment her by always making her cook.
Luke arched an brow, clearly unconvinced. He gripped Jane's chin and, without warning, pressed his lips to hers in a forceful kiss.
Jane's mouth was instantly filled with Luke's familiar, intoxicating masculine scent. Luke didn't end the kiss until Jane was left gasping for air.
"Not bad at all," Luke remarked, his voice low and husky.
"Be a good girl. I don't want to get reports from Hayden about you." Luke was reminding Jane not to repeat the stupid mistake of getting kidnapped at the entrance of Ashwood University last time. He didn't want to worry about her.
To Jane, it sounded like a warning not to cause trouble with Ella while he was away from Jovinia. Especially, she wasn't allowed to reveal their secret marriage to his precious fiancée. He would have Hayden watch her closely.
"Don't worry, Mr. Drake. I took your money, and I know my place." Jane forced a smile, but her eyes stayed cold.
She only managed to hold herself back from storming to the Judd residence the very next day to settle the score with Ella, all because he'd paid for her mother's surgery.
She could hold back. Once Mom's surgery was over, she'd make Ella pay. 'If it comes to that, I'll drag Ella down with me,' Jane thought grimly.
Hearing Jane misinterpret his words, Luke's eyes darkened slightly, but he chose not to explain. With that, Luke finished breakfast and left for the airport.
After always having to put on an obedient front around Luke, Jane could finally let out a breath she didn't know she was holding.
Jane turned and went back upstairs to the walk-in closet, taking off the purple dress. It wasn't that she didn't like purple. On the contrary, purple was her favorite color. But because Luke also liked it, she no longer wanted to wear it.
During Luke's absence, Jane wanted the freedom to choose her own clothes. She wore her faded favorites, tied up her hair, applied clear lip gloss, and headed out to work.
Maybe it was because Luke wasn't around, but even her work went surprisingly smoothly today. A new jewelry collection arrived at the studio, bringing a surge of customers inquiring about custom pieces.
That afternoon, Jane made time to visit the hospital. The hospital introduced Robert to Jane, an internationally acclaimed expert in the field. She made a point of checking his credentials online and confirmed that he was a leading authority in this specialty.
Internationally, few hospitals could get this professor to operate. Rose's doctor said that without Robert seeing Rose's records and his interest in her case, she wouldn't have had this rare chance for surgery.
Jane felt relieved. After carefully reading the consent form, she signed it. The hospital told her that the surgery could take place within a week at the earliest and two weeks at the latest, depending on Rose's health condition.
After giving her mother a sponge bath at the hospital and visiting Dwight, Jane finally returned to the penthouse.
To her surprise, the moment Jane got home, she ran into Mandy sneaking out with a bag in hand, looking rather suspicious. Jane frowned and asked, "Mandy, where are you off to?"
