Jane's smile vanished, and her gaze turned cold when she saw Ella.
Jane thought, 'Mom's surgery is coming up. I have to play it safe, so Luke won't take back the operation money. Otherwise, I'd make Ella regret it and force her to cough up every last cent of those 60 thousand dollars and the ring.'
Ella said, "You dare to come back to this industry, so why are you afraid that people will find out? Jane, I really didn't expect you to have the nerve to show your face here again as a jewelry designer."
Ella deliberately looked Jane up and down meaningfully and showed a disdainful look, but deep down, she was seething with resentment.
She thought, 'Damn that bitch Jane. She somehow looks even more stunning than the last time I saw her.'
Ella couldn't help but notice that Jane was dressed in old-fashioned, frumpy outfits today. Yet somehow, those clothes carried an effortless charm on Jane. This made Ella very resentful.
She deliberately draped herself in her most expensive fur coat and slipped on heels costing tens of thousands of dollars. However, she still felt outshone standing next to Jane.
Ella fumed inwardly, 'Damn it. There's no way I'm letting her stay by Luke's side.'
Jane glared at Ella's smug look and felt burning to demand the 60 thousand dollars and the ring back right then and there.
But she reminded herself, 'This is in my workplace. I can't let personal grudges interfere with work. Causing a scene might disturb other clients.'
Therefore, Jane suppressed her anger. She took a deep breath and said, "Did you come here just to say this? If so, I don't have time to waste on you. I have other things to take care of. Help yourself."
With that, she turned to walk away.
"Hold on. Is this how you treat your guests? I'm only here out of family obligation to boost your sales. Now that you've got a customer, are you really going to kick me out?" Ella stopped Jane.
She added, "Don't be ungrateful, Jane."
Ella let out a snort and plopped herself down with an air of superiority.
She continued, "Let me be honest with you. I'm here to spend money. You saw it that day. I'm Luke's girlfriend now, so I need some high-end jewelry to match my status. My honey has plenty of money. He'll pay for whatever I pick.
"Jane, this is my first time at your tiny studio. So, what do you have that's worth seeing? Show me."
Hearing Ella's words, Jane only felt a wave of emotion rise and fall in her chest.
She couldn't tell if it was Ella's arrogance or just the mention of Luke that unsettled her. Either way, she just couldn't calm the storm inside her.
"Okay. Please wait. I'll have someone prepare them for you," Jane said.
In the end, it was Jane's professionalism that helped her suppress the turmoil in her chest.
Jane quickly told her colleague to bring out the studio's flagship raw gemstones and finished pieces.
Money was no object for Josie. She handpicked these raw gemstones from their origins and had them specially shipped back to Jovinia. Even among Jovinia's high society circles, they were considered rare finds.
Ella said, "I thought your studio would have something impressive. How dare you present these pathetic small stones? What are they, just a few carats? If I were to stoop to wearing something this small, my darling would think they're downright shabby."
To Jane's surprise, Ella merely scoffed at the diamonds on display.
Jane kept a straight face. "This one is six carats, and that one is seven. Both are considered sizable for diamonds. Ms. Judd, if you'd like to see anything larger, you'll need to book an appointment in advance."
She explained in a businesslike tone, and her gaze briefly assessed Ella's fingers.
Jane added, "However, from a professional standpoint, these two already perfectly complement your hand structure. To be frank, anything larger would only add unnecessary strain, and wearing such big diamonds for extended periods could even cause injury to your fingers."
"What a joke! Are you jealous of me? It's not like you've ever worn a diamond over seven carats—" Ella suddenly choked on her words.
Though Jane currently had a shabby appearance, she really owned diamonds over seven carats just a few years ago.
When Jane and Colin were engaged, Colin personally selected a flawless 10-carat diamond and had it custom-made into an engagement ring for her.
Back then, Ella watched from the sidelines with her eyes practically dripping with jealousy.
Jane seemed to recall the memory as well. Her eyes dimmed momentarily before she remained silent.
Ella cleared her throat, trying to hide her embarrassment.
She asked, "By the way, that obsidian ring I wore last time was nothing special. It's just set with a bunch of cheap diamond chips, totally worthless compared to your ten-carat diamond ring.
"You could return that ten-carat diamond to Colin, so why are you so desperate to get this worthless ring back from me?"
Ella genuinely couldn't understand why Jane would spend 60 thousand dollars to buy that ring back when she didn't even know the ring belonged to Luke.
"You're asking me that? Don't you know why?" Jane gave Ella a look as if Ella were an idiot.
Ella's heart skipped a beat. She wondered, 'Has Jane already known about the connection between the ring and Luke?'
