After work, Jane had planned to head straight home, but Josie insisted on taking her to have a barbecue and karaoke on the excuse that Jane had been too stressed lately.
As soon as they arrived at the restaurant, Jane spotted Warren sitting at a window-side table.
Warren waved them over with a warm, gentle smile. "Josie, Jane, over here."
"Jane, you should eat a lot of meat. It's only been a little while, but you look skinnier than last time." Warren, acting like a caring older brother, helped Jane with some beef.
He frowned as he studied her, his eyes filled with concern and disapproval.
"Has Josie been giving you too much work, so you didn't get enough rest?" Warren asked.
"No. My work is fulfilling, but it's not overwhelming." Jane looked at the food Warren served and felt a bit helpless.
Warren had been taking care of Jane in every little way, just like her real brother.
Josie said, "Warren, you're so biased. You helped Jane a lot with her food and even threw my studio under the bus. If you keep playing favorites like this, I will get jealous."
Though Josie said so, there wasn't a sign of anger in her eyes. On the contrary, she couldn't be happier to see Warren getting closer to Jane.
Warren said, "Alright, my princess. I will help you too."
The three of them chatted and laughed merrily, enjoying a harmonious dinner together.
As they were finishing up, Josie suddenly said, "I have something urgent to do at the studio. I need to go."
"What's up, Josie? Let me go with you," Jane said. She wiped her mouth and stood up, ready to accompany Josie.
Josie refused. "No, thanks. It's just a little thing. I can handle it myself. Warren, remember to take Jane home safe and sound. I'm counting on you."
As Josie left, she threw Warren a meaningful wink.
It was clear as day what Josie was plotting. Watching her dart off in a flash, Warren chuckled helplessly and gave Jane a gentle smile. "Well, looks like karaoke is off the table tonight. Come on. Let me take you home."
Jane hesitated and was rooted to the spot for a moment. She thought, 'I'm living in Luke's apartment. If Warren takes me home, he'll probably wonder how I could possibly afford a place like that.'
Warren stood up, only to realize that Jane hadn't followed. He asked, "What's wrong? Why aren't you going?"
Warren noticed Jane biting her lip in hesitation, but he clearly misunderstood her intentions.
He said, "Jane, don't let Josie's teasing get to you. I know you don't see me that way, and I've just considered you my little sister. Come on. Let's go. Don't worry. I'll just drop you off downstairs. Don't get the wrong idea."
Warren thought Jane might be uncomfortable with a man escorting her home alone at night, so he proactively explained himself.
"I... Warren, I didn't misunderstand you. I know that's not what you meant," Jane stammered.
Warren's words only made Jane embarrassed. He had always been so open and considerate towards her, but she became guilty because of the fear that someone might discover her relationship with Luke.
Warren said, "Alright then. Since you don't feel that way, let's get going. If I don't get you home safe, Josie will never let me hear the end of it."
Twenty minutes later, Warren's car pulled up outside the residential complex where Jane lived.
Warren politely got off and opened the door for her. "We're here. Now that I know you live here, I can rest easy. The security here is top-notch. It's a really safe place for a young woman living alone."
The words "a young woman living alone" gave Jane's heart a nervous jolt.
She said, "Thanks, Warren. It's getting late. You should head back. I'll go upstairs now."
Jane didn't dare meet Warren's eyes. She clutched her bag and hurried into the residential complex with her head down.
Warren turned back and watched as Jane's figure disappeared into the night. Though his eyes wore a smile, a flicker of solemn concern finally surfaced beneath it.
He knew the apartments in this complex cost a fortune, far beyond what most people could ever afford.
He thought, 'Jane seems to be hiding something from us.'
Jane reached the penthouse by elevator. When she was about to enter the passcode, the tightly shut apartment door suddenly swung open from inside.
Before she could react, someone seized her wrist and yanked her forcefully into the apartment.
