After their intimacy, Jane turned her back to the bathroom. With her eyes shut tight, she wrapped the blanket tightly around herself. Silent tears rolled down from the corners of her closed eyes.
Just then, Luke emerged from the bathroom. His bare torso glistened with water droplets, and his broad shoulders tapered to a chiseled chest and perfectly defined abs, revealing the very embodiment of masculinity.
With a towel hanging loosely around his hips, his entire demeanor exuded the leisure air of post-satisfaction.
Luke lay down behind Jane. He instinctively reached out to pull the seemingly asleep woman into his embrace.
But just as his cool fingertips touched Jane's waist, he felt her slender body begin to tremble involuntarily.
Luke stopped. He looked up and saw Jane's delicate shoulders quivering and her back radiating unmistakable fear. His brows knitted into a deep frown.
A lifeless shadow flickered in the depths of his cold eyes.
Jane had no idea what Luke was thinking behind her. Nor did she know if he had noticed the resistance and fear she felt toward him.
She tried to accept the fact calmly and pretended to be asleep, but her body trembled uncontrollably. She simply couldn't suppress the terror rising inside her.
After a tense silence, Jane sensed the man behind her shifting. He seemed to get out of bed again.
Before she could decide whether to keep pretending to sleep, the rustling sound of Luke dressing suddenly filled the room, and then the bedroom door was slammed shut.
Jane realized that Luke had gone. She was startled, wondering if she should follow him. After all, as a "purchased item", maybe she ought to at least pretend to care. However, she was simply too exhausted.
After a whole night of tension, her body and mind finally relaxed completely once Luke left.
She couldn't spare any energy for Luke's moods. She had been struggling to keep her eyes open, and now, she could finally relax and close them.
She thought, 'Whatever happens, I can wait until after I wake up.'
Nevertheless, when Jane woke up, she realized she had been so naive to take things so simply.
It seemed she had thoroughly offended Luke. From that day on, Luke never set foot in the apartment they shared again.
Luke hadn't left the country. He just stopped coming back. She felt as if he had abruptly withdrawn from her world and vanished into thin air.
A few days later, Mandy smugly mentioned in front of her that she was being ignored and would probably be kicked out soon. Only then did Jane finally realize one thing.
She realized that she must have done something to displease Luke that night.
Either Luke had grown tired and bored of her, or she had become so unbearable that he couldn't stand the sight of her anymore. Either way, it meant the same thing.
To put it nicely, she and Luke were in a cold war. To put it bluntly, she had been unilaterally discarded by him.
That day, Jane suddenly received a call from the hospital.
A nurse told her, "Ms. Ritter, please come to the hospital. Good news. Your mother woke up."
Jane was at her studio when the call came. Without hesitation, she turned to Josie to ask for leave and rushed straight to the hospital.
Jane's mother, Rose Judd, had fallen into a coma due to complications from kidney failure.
Back then, Jane couldn't afford the best medication and treatment plans for her, so her condition deteriorated due to the delay.
But after Jane became involved with Luke and received 300 thousand dollars, Rose's surgery was promptly scheduled.
In addition, Rose was transferred to one of Jovinia's top-tier private hospitals, where every aspect of her treatment, from the plan and medications to the medical equipment, was upgraded to the finest and most advanced available.
The attending physician once told Jane that if they were lucky, Rose might wake up within the next few days. Once she was awake, they could further improve her condition before surgery, which would significantly increase the chances of a successful operation.
Jane didn't dare to get her hopes up. But to her amazement, Rose really woke up.
