In the hospital ward, Jane was gently wiping Rose's face with a damp towel.
Since Rose just woke up, she wasn't allowed to eat yet, so she could only be administered IV nutrients.
Rose lay in bed and watched Jane tending to her with devoted care. Her pale face revealed both sorrow and reluctance.
Rose said, "Jane, I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I've burdened you and made your life so hard."
She thought, 'My precious darling, you must live very hard.'
The moment Rose woke up, she noticed Jane looked noticeably thinner than she remembered.
Jane used to be a princess who never had to lift a finger for anything, but now, there were faint calluses forming on her fingertips and palms.
Jane said, "Mom, what are you talking about? There's no such thing as being a burden between us. Besides, I'm doing fine now. I have a fulfilling job and can support myself. So stop worrying so much. I'm not struggling at all."
Jane turned away to wring out the towel.
She knew what Rose was about to say, but she had put so much effort into arranging everything, so there was no way she was letting Rose have her way on this.
Just as expected, Jane heard Rose's voice coming from behind her the very next moment.
Rose said, "Jane, don't lie to me. I know how hard this past year has been for you. Now that I'm awake, it must mean my condition is getting better.
"Le-let's not go through with the surgery. Save that money for your future. My illness isn't that serious. Surgery isn't that necessary. Don't waste money."
"No way." Jane immediately put down the towel and turned around.
She continued, "Mom, please don't worry so much. I've paid for everything and scheduled your surgery. Just focus on your health. After the operation, we'll have many peaceful years together."
Rose replied, "No. Go get that money back. I know how I am doing. This surgery costs tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Where could you possibly get that much money for my treatment?
"I see. Did Johnson or Lily make you agree to their terms before lending you so much? No way. They're not that generous. They'll sell you out. You can't take their money."
Though Rose had been unconscious for so long, she knew exactly what kind of people Johnson and Lily were.
Rose had only herself to blame for trusting her family back then. That was how they ended up taking over all the assets she received after her divorce.
There was no way Rose would believe that Johnson and Lily would lend money for surgery out of the goodness of their hearts.
Seeing Rose getting emotional, Jane quickly tried to calm her down. "Mom, no. This money has nothing to do with them. Actually, it's from my husband. He covered the cost."
Rose blurted out, "What? Your husband?"
Her agitation abruptly gave way to a few seconds of stunned silence. For a moment, Rose looked more shocked than agitated.
She said, "Jane, wh-when did you get married? Wait. Don't tell me you sold yourself off to some wealthy old creep just to pay for my treatment. No way. If that's true, I refuse to take a single cent of this money."
Jane replied, "Mom, what are you thinking? How could I possibly sell myself just for money? There's no wealthy old creep. My husband and I fell for each other. We met at work. He's young, handsome, and well-off.
"Josie also met him and is jealous of how lucky I am. You've got to trust my judgment."
Without a second thought, Jane stretched the truth a little to calm Rose down.
"Really?" Rose looked at Jane skeptically.
Indeed, she saw subtle changes in Jane compared to before. Though Jane had lost some weight compared to how Rose remembered her, her demeanor and style of dress were noticeably different from before.
Rose had once been a wealthy socialite herself. She could tell at a glance that all the clothes Jane was wearing were designer brands.
Jane no longer resembled the girl she was when they first fell into poverty, who was always dressed in faded, worn-out clothes.
But Rose thought to herself, 'Even though Jane's appearance and bearing have improved greatly since her most difficult days, that doesn't prove she didn't marry a sleazy old man.
'What if she really married someone she doesn't love just to pay for my medical bills? Even if I recovered after the surgery, she wouldn't be happy.'
Rose said, "No. I won't agree with this surgery unless I see your husband. Since you claim he is so wonderful, bring him here to meet me."
