Rose said, "If your husband is really that great, why didn't he come with you to see me? Does he dislike our family or just not love you that much? Can't he even be bothered to come with you?"
Rose's words actually made some sense.
If Jane's husband truly loved her, he would have rushed over immediately upon hearing that her long-comatose mother had awakened, whether to support Jane or to make a good first impression on Rose.
Rose had been awake for quite some time, yet she still hadn't seen this so-called wonderful husband Jane kept talking about. Rose certainly felt suspicious.
Jane's heart skipped a beat at Rose's words. Jane thought, 'Mom wants to meet Luke, but I promised him to keep a secret about our marriage from anyone.'
At the thought that Luke had stormed out that day without returning, Jane wasn't even sure if Luke would still want to maintain this so-called "contractual relationship" with her. She felt Luke obviously despised her.
Jane said, "No, Mom. You've got it wrong. He couldn't come with me because he's away on a business trip. Look, you woke up so suddenly, and he's busy with work. He just couldn't drop everything and rush back right away.
"I promise I'll bring him straight to see you the moment he returns. Mom, please don't overthink it. Just focus on your recovery. I promise, once you meet him, you'll be completely satisfied."
Jane could only use Luke's business trip as an excuse to cover things up.
No matter what, Rose's surgery had to go ahead. Jane had made so much effort to arrange for that world-class specialist to fly in from abroad to operate on Rose. She couldn't afford to let this opportunity slip away.
Rose wasn't stupid. She suspected that Jane might hire someone to pose as her so-called "husband". Thus, she told Jane pointedly to bring her marriage certificate next time she came to the hospital.

'He's probably with Ella right now. He might be holding his true love in his arms and showering her with affection.
'After all, Ella is his real girlfriend. That's the undeniable truth, isn't it?'
Jane tried to tell herself not to care, but when she went downstairs for some water and saw Mandy, she couldn't stop herself from asking, "Mandy, do you know where Mr. Drake has been these days? Has he mentioned when he might return?"
Hearing Jane's question, Mandy sneered with contempt, "What's the point of asking me, Mrs. Drake? Shouldn't you know better than I?"
Mandy practically wore her disdain and schadenfreude on her face. She thought, 'She would surely fall out of Mr. Drake's favor soon.'
Jane pursed her lips, too lazy to argue with Mandy. She thought, 'Forget it.'
She held a glass of water and went upstairs. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she stared at her phone and debated whether to call Luke.
She thought, 'Maybe if I ask, Luke happens to be in a good mood and might agree to help.'
