Jane could feel her heart pounding in her chest. She couldn't believe Luke would call her. The memory of their unpleasant parting that night was still fresh in her mind.
That night, his sex with her was half-forced, almost punishing. He stormed out in the end, slamming the door behind him.
Jane had no idea why Luke seemed so furious that night. It was as if she'd committed some unforgivable sin to provoke such rage from him.
After that, seeing the icy contempt in Luke's eyes, she couldn't help but think that he would probably never want her again. But now, he's calling her.
Jane picked up the phone, her voice trembling slightly with caution. "Hello."
"Jane, clear your weekend." Luke's deep, icy voice came through the phone, brooking no argument.
Jane froze for a moment. She was shocked that the first thing out of Luke's mouth was an order. "Okay." She hesitated for just a split second before nodding.
The words were out before she realized—She'd agreed without even asking why. She thought, 'Did I just say okay? What on earth am I doing? How could I just instinctively obey Luke like this?'
Jane's lips parted slightly before she spoke cautiously, "Which day exactly this weekend? I might have to work overtime. Could you tell me what you need me to clear my schedule for?"
"My grandfather is being discharged this weekend. You and I both must be there. I'll send Hayden to inform you of the exact time.
"But let me make this clear—you're not allowed to be late or break the appointment for any reason." Luke's deep, emotionless voice came through, cold as ice.
She thought, 'So, it's about Dwight's discharge.' Suddenly, Jane felt a sharp pang in her heart. She thought Luke was calling because their cold war was finally thawing.
She felt herself pathetic. 'Turns out, I was wrong. He reached out just because Dwight is being discharged—he has no choice but to contact me.'
'Just doing what I'm paid for,' Jane thought, agreeing without a fuss. "Okay, I'll be there on time. But... um, could I ask you for a favor?" Jane asked, her voice tentative. "My mom just woke up... and, well, she wants to see my husband.
"The thing is, she won't feel at ease about her surgery until she sees you. So, if it's not too much trouble, could you play along and come see my mom with me?"
Jane took a deep breath and finally voiced what was on her mind. She told herself that the only reason Luke called wasn't to make up, but just because of Dwight. Still, she couldn't help feeling a sudden, inexplicable disappointment.
She tried to persuade herself that it was all because she was terrified that this might make things worse for her mom.
'If only Luke and I made up,' Jane thought, 'I could just bring him to meet Mom—everything would fall into place. Right. That's all there is to it.'
"See your mom with you?" There was a cold pause as Luke's stern voice hesitated on the line. Then came a mocking chuckle. "Jane, don't delude yourself about your status.
"What's between us is nothing but a business deal. I pay you to act as Mrs. Drake in front of my grandfather, and you take my money for your mother's treatment. That's it.
"The money I gave you more than covers your services. I have no obligation to play along with your little charade in front of your mother. Do you want to claim to the world that you're my wife? You're not worthy."
With that, Luke ended the call without another word of warmth. Jane was left alone, listening to the abrupt silence of the disconnected line, phone still pressed to her ear.
"You're not worthy." Luke's ruthless voice echoed in Jane's ears, but her face stayed blank. Maybe she was already so numb that she couldn't even feel the pain anymore.
'I should've known better,' Jane thought bitterly. 'There was no way Luke would ever agree to my request.' She wished she could slap some sense into herself—maybe that would finally wake her up.
She blamed herself in her mind, 'How could I have been so foolish, hoping Luke would help me, and even making such a ridiculous request? Ridiculous. So ridiculous.
'Given our current icy standoff, there's no way Luke would agree. Even at our best, Luke was never the charitable type—he's a business tycoon. He will never help me for free.'
Done mocking her foolishness, Jane took a deep breath and pushed herself up from the bed. She set her phone aside with a quiet sigh and then headed to the bathroom to freshen up for bed.
She encouraged herself in her mind. 'Only with a good night's sleep will I have the energy to work, make money, and figure things out.'
At this point, she was considering where she could get a fake marriage license—and who she could rope in to pretend to be her husband. 'Maybe, if it comes down to it, I'll have to ask Warren for help,' she thought.
