Meanwhile, in the penthouse office of the Drake Group. Hayden knocked and entered. He saw Luke with his back to the door, leaning against the big desk, gazing thoughtfully at the cityscape through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Not daring to interrupt, Hayden waited quietly to the side. After a while, Luke seemed to snap out of his thoughts. Frowning at Hayden standing behind him, he asked coldly, "What is it?"
"Mr. Drake, I just wanted to ask, are you not going back to the apartment again tonight?"
Jane had it all wrong—Luke hadn't been spending time with Ella these past few days. He'd been staying at the office all along.
His office featured a private suite, complete with a lounge and a fully equipped bathroom—everything he needed for a comfortable stay. If he didn't go home, staying here was even more convenient and comfortable than a hotel.
In the past, Luke would occasionally stay overnight at the office when working late. But never like this—he had been living here for almost a full week without returning home.
Hayden couldn't shake the feeling that Mr. Drake was acting like he and Jane were having a fight, giving each other silent treatment.
But then he shook his head, thinking, 'Maybe I'm just overthinking it. After all, that kind of thing only happens between real couples, and Mr. Drake and Ms. Ritter aren't even in a real relationship.'
"No. Ask Mandy to keep an eye on Ms. Ritter. And..." Luke's cool voice paused for a moment before he continued, "Tell her, don't stop making those tonic soups. Make sure Ms. Ritter gets them every day."
Jane had always been too thin and was even diagnosed with anemia, so Luke asked Mandy to care for her. A few days later, Jane finally put on some healthy weight.
No sooner had Hayden agreed than Harvey hurriedly knocked on the door and came in. Harvey said with visible discomfort, "Mr. Drake, Ms. Judd is demanding to see you again.
"I followed your instructions—told her you were working late and turned her away. But she seemed genuinely upset this time, like it might be important. Should I call to check?"
Lately, Harvey had been put in charge of handling affairs for the Judd family, and it was running him ragged.
He used to think Ella was a good person—after all, she helped Luke that night at the Night Charm Club, so he thought she must be easy to work with. But to his surprise, Ella and her whole family were such high-maintenance nightmares.
She asked for limited-edition luxury goods, extravagant jewelry, and then a fancy car. Bottomless greed would be one thing, but they were also endlessly causing trouble.
They had zero empathy or respect for anyone else—honestly, it was like they didn't even have the most basic emotional intelligence.
They were the perfect example of social climbers who got lucky and now act all high and mighty. Harvey was so fed up.
He wished he'd never helped Luke find this woman in the first place. If he hadn't, he wouldn't be running around like a servant, getting bossed around nonstop.
At this point, he even found himself envying his brother, Hayden, who only had to look after Jane. For all the bad reputation Jane had, at least she never caused this much trouble.
"Enough, I heard you." Luke raised his hand, pressing his long fingers impatiently to his brow.
Harvey was fed up—and now, even Luke found the Judd family utterly insufferable. Not long ago, Luke had used his connections to release Ella from the detention center.
Ella had once tearfully pleaded her case to Luke, claiming that her best friend Jasmine Clark had manipulated her, and that Jane had seized the opportunity to frame her.
But Luke was not an idiot. One look was all it took for him to know—there was no way Ella wasn't involved.
Luke only had her released because he'd unintentionally taken her virginity, and she had once saved him. It was merely about fulfilling his responsibility—nothing more.
As memories of their passionate encounters flashed through his mind, Luke's already furrowed brows drew even tighter. The woman in his memory was delicate and graceful, her scent sweet and lingering; even her breathy whispers were as enticing as a kitten's purr, utterly bewitching him.
Luke had never been particularly drawn to women. But he had to admit that delicate woman had truly satisfied him. Marrying her wasn't just about fulfilling an obligation anymore.
But Ella now bore no resemblance whatsoever to the woman that night at the club.
