Were it not for the obsidian ring in Ella's hand—crafted by Skylor, truly one-of-a-kind with no duplicate in the world—and that familiar fragrance of hers, Luke might have seriously doubted whether Ella was the woman from that night.
A moment later, Luke dialed Ella's number. "It's me." Luke's deep, magnetic voice came through the receiver. On the other end, Ella's face instantly lit up with delight.
"Luke, I finally get to hear your voice." Ella cooed, putting on an exaggeratedly sweet, high-pitched tone. "Are you done with work yet? You have no idea how much I've missed you. Can we meet tonight?"
She deliberately made her voice even more shrill and sugary than usual, sounding utterly coquettish and affected.
But that tone—meant to be seductive—only made impatience flicker in Luke's eyes. He said coldly, "Work keeps me busy. No time to see you."
Seated in his chair, Luke turned around to see Harvey place an exquisite square box before him. With a slight arch of his brow, he motioned for Harvey to open it.
Just then, Ella's sickly-sweet voice continued, "Oh, alright, darling, work is important, but you have to take care of yourself too. By the way, I know you're busy, so I specially made my signature pastries and had Harvey bring them to you.
"Luke, my hands are sore from kneading the dough all day just for you. Don't forget to eat them. Every single one is handmade by me, with all my love."
As soon as Ella finished speaking, Harvey had already opened the small box in front of him. Inside were over a dozen exquisitely handmade pastries—so delicate that only a master pastry chef with decades of experience could have crafted them—now neatly arranged before Luke.
Luke's eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at the pastries, not a flicker of emotion crossing his face.
For someone as notoriously particular about food as Luke, the truth was apparent the moment the box was opened—not a single pastry in that box had been made by Ella.
He was a longtime patron of Pretty Sweets. The signature pastries, crafted by Pretty Sweets' master chefs who had been making pastries for decades, were now perfectly arranged in the box before him.
Just then, Harvey and Hayden caught snippets of conversation leaking from the receiver. When they saw the pastries in the box—clearly the work of Pretty Sweets's master chefs—they exchanged a knowing look.
In that look, both men saw the same annoyance at Ella lying through her teeth.
"Well, I see. The pastries look exquisite," Luke said coolly, his voice almost devoid of emotion.
"They're divine too. Luke, I made each one with my own hands. Taste them and you'll see how lucky you are to have me as your girlfriend," Ella gushed, completely unaware that her store-bought pastries had already given her away the moment Luke saw them.
Luke couldn't even be bothered to expose her. With a noncommittal grunt, he moved to end the call.
"Wait," Ella called out urgently, her voice tinged with a pleading note, "I've got a little problem, and there's something I need to talk to you about."
Luke asked coolly, "Oh? What is it?" A cold, mocking smirk played at the corner of his lips.
Any sense of responsibility Luke once felt for Ella had nearly vanished, worn away by her increasingly unreasonable demands. At this rate, it wouldn't be long before he lost the last shred of patience he had for this woman.
Ella said, "Darling, it's about my family—the thing I mentioned before. The Judd Group was supposed to work with Electronic Drake, Drake Group's subsidiary.
"Everything was settled, and the order was supposed to go to us. But now, some of your people are being so mean on purpose.
"They say my dad's quote is wrong and want to cancel our deal. Luke, your people are being so unfair. They know I'm your girlfriend, but they're giving us a hard time. Isn't that just disrespecting you? You have to help me..."
"I see." Luke's icy voice cut Ella off before she could say another word. "I'll instruct my team. Tell your father the Judd Group's order will go through without a hitch."
The moment Ella heard Luke agree without even asking for details, her attitude instantly shifted.
She gushed, "Thank you, darling. I knew you wouldn't just leave me hanging. You're always so good to me. I'll bring you some more pastries and come to see you tomorrow."
"No need. I won't be at the office," Luke refused coldly. "I never lack anything. Stop sending me things."
