Silas POV
Another boring school day. I toss my textbooks into my locker, slamming it shut. Elena stands right by my side, tapping away on the screen of her phone. She's been more clingy than usual these days and it's starting to get on my nerves. Sadly, there's only little I could do or say. Betrothed wolves were meant to be seen together always; something about demonstrating the closeness of their bond. A good Alpha is nothing without a Luna, so the saying went.
Then again, wolves only felt a strong connection with their mates and even in the rare cases of betrothal, there was meant to be a form of partnership, yet I felt an aftertaste of repulsion having Elena around, hovering about everything I do.
I feel no solace in being hers, instead someone else plagues my thoughts every waking moment.
It's like my mind's been drugged and I can't think straight anymore.
Freya, that damn Freya.
Annoying, witty, with a peculiar allure to her. I want her, my wolf wants her but I can't say if it's just to toy with or something more than that.
"...Silas?"
I'm pulled from my thoughts once her palm falls on my shoulder. Unconsciously, I shrug her hands off me before I realize it. Hurt shows across her face.
I feel a bit guilty, maybe because I'm thinking of Freya while standing next to Elena, but it isn't the first time a different girl dances in my mind - yet this one in particular is different. "Did you hear what I said?"
I say nothing, avoiding her eyes.
"You're not paying attention to me, Silas."
Her whining begins as my wolf is irritated, wanting to walk away and leave her but she's our betrothed, we can't.
"What were you saying?"
She sighs, placing her phone in her pocket.
"I suggested we hang out later today, just the two of us like we used to."
My mind falls back to painful memories of forcing interest in whatever she had to say all those times we 'spent time together.' I have no patience to put up with it.
"Rain check?"
"C'mon, Silas."
She leans closer to me, rubbing her graciously supple chest against my arm. The typical card she plays whenever she wants me to get her something. Previously, it had been amusing and maybe had some charm but presently, I feel nothing.
I take a step back.
"I'm not in the mood to listen to gossip about who's doing what and what's happening where. Your idea of spending time together isn't really exciting."
She takes another step closer to me, not getting the hint which annoys me further.
Damn, is this what Freya felt when I kept insisting?
Shit, I'm thinking about her again.
"We can do other things besides talking." She stares at me suggestively and I immediately know what she's talking about and sigh.
"Is that all you have to offer?"
"Excuse me?" She seems taken aback by my refusal, after all I've never refused to do that with her and every other easy girl available when the bet was on.
But now, something felt different. Something forming churns inside me.
Her face turns red from embarrassment, from rejection and anger. I prepare myself for her tantrum when somehow I feel her.
Freya.
I just know she's somewhere close by. My wolf feels it and he's filled with excitement. Soon enough, my eyes are searching and quickly find her laughing and talking vibrantly next to Adam.
Adam.
The initial anticipation melts away into anger.
Seeing her smiling and laughing without care, something I had only been able to experience just once and now she shares it with Adam? The urge to walk up to them and rip him away from her side overcomes me and I almost give in to it.
He leans closer to her, tucking in a loose lock of her luxurious brown locks behind her ear and her cheeks gives off a slight pink tint.
My wolf fumes, threatening to tear his way free and rip through
Adam like sheets of paper.
"Silas!" Elena yells, forcing me to turn to her.
"What?" I almost growl.
She breathes heavily with anger. It's obvious she had begun her nagging and I hadn't paid her any attention but I don't care.
"I'm going to tell my father that you've been neglecting me."
She throws the 'F' word around like a threat and I know what she means. Her father would complain to mine and I would get an ear full about responsibilities and duties to the pack. Like I already didn't know about the sacrifices I have to make.
"Fine, I'll pay more attention to you."
They're already gone once I look up. I'm instantly disappointed.
"And our date?"
I groan.
"Fine, let's do your date thing."
"Perfect."
She smiles, finally having her way.
FREYA'S POV
I take the first bite of my simple salami sandwich, welcoming the sudden burst of vibrant flavors. I moan from the taste as my hunger is slowly being satiated. The table is empty with just me on it. It's a little lonely and I miss Xena the more with each moment. She's been absent for days now, having a family emergency she had to take care of.
Her not being around makes school harder with literally no one else to converse with and my mind constantly having flashes of Silas. I need someone to vent to.
"Iley, sweet cheeks."
I look up at Adam casually falling into place right by me, setting his food tray on the table.
"What are you doing here?"
"Ah, I'm offended. You forgot you agreed on having lunch together."
He fakes a cry of pain and I can't help but chuckle a bit at his silliness.
"I didn't forget, just didn't think you were serious. Don't you have some cool kids table to sit at, you know, one that won't affect your social class in school?"
"I prefer where I am." "Okay, don't say I didn't warn you."
I shrug, focusing back on my meal, feeling nothing but the temporal bliss of food. There's no pleasure greater than eating good food.
"So... have you spoken to Silas lately?"
Suddenly, my appetite dies. My once precious bread looks like cardboard.
"Well, no, I haven't." I answer, avoiding his eyes. I don't want him to see the mixed emotions raging within me.
"You guys still have some grudge?"
"It's not a grudge, we just agreed it would be best to not be around each other anymore for my peace of mind. I don't regret it." I ask myself if the words are to convince him or myself.
"You sure it was an agreement to avoid each other?" "Yeah." Sort of an agreement.
"Well, don't look now. But our Alpha boy's coming this way fast, and he seems pissed."
I turn my head too quick it almost hurts, looking behind me. Silas strides across the large refectory hall right towards my table on the opposite side of his and his face looks anything but pleased.
My heart picks up pace quickly. I think I'm going crazy again and I'm suddenly high on adrenaline, watching him getting closer to me. I doubt if he's really coming to me but a part of me is jumping at the thought of it.
He reaches our table in a few minutes and my heart only pounds louder in my ears. He stares at me and I forget to breathe again. Our eyes fix on each other's. His familiar silver ones calm the deepening hole in my chest that had only grown wider every passing day. I feel the need to reduce the distance between us, to take in his peppermint and wood spice scent up my nostrils till I'm numb to the world. My wolf urges me to touch him but I'm frozen in place.
The magic falls a once his eyes move to Adam and change into something dangerous. In the blink of an eye, he lifts the Beta off his seat, tossing him onto the ground like it's nothing. His silver eyes gleam the bright yellow of his wolf. That's not Silas.
The crashing sound echoes through the hall and now, all eyes move to our table.
"What the hell, man?" Adam winces in pain from the sudden impact he wasn't prepared for, rubbing his bruised elbows. "What do you think you're doing sitting next to her? Get your ass back to our table." His voice is deep and threatening.
"I can seat wherever I want."
"Not with her, not next to her. She's not yours." He growls in an inhumane manner.
"She's not yours either." Adam bites back but with a submitting tone, not daring to growl back against his Alpha. Silas remains there silently for seconds. I watch his eyes revert to silver. And then after throwing one last glance my way, he turns and walks away.
What the hell just happened?
