FREYA'S POV:
I already have a headache once the bell signaling the end of the class rings.
I know I shouldn't have thought about it... I shouldn't have jinxed myself and now, I'm stuck with the last two people I want to see constantly for the next week.
As soon as everyone starts exiting from class, I pick up my books and dash to the front desk right where Mrs. Michael is before she can leave.
"Excuse me, Ma'am." I say in the most polite toned voice I can muster to butter her up.
She pauses from packing up her stuff and looks at me dryly.
"If you didn't understand something in class, you'll have to wait till the end of school to meet me, kid." She immediately jumps to conclusion on what I need.
"No... not that. It's about the group placements." I explain.
Her face quickly contorts into a glare once my words sink in.
"I'm sure you heard that I'm not going to change anything about them... if you were infact paying attention."
"I did... Just... You see, my other partners and I have a bit of bad blood and working together wouldn't exactly bring out our best performances..." I struggle to make her see reason but as I say the words, I see how stupid I sound.
"Well, that's none of my problem. If you refuse to work together, that's an automatic fail for each of you."
"But..."
"No buts, Miss Willow." She states firmly.
"Mrs. Michael?" Another deeper voice suddenly enters into our conversation, startling me in the process.
I jump up in fright once I hear the deep voice echo from behind me, swerving around to see Silas standing there.
Just how long has he been there?
He looks down on me intensely but with a blank cold stare.
I glare back at him, folding my arms. I would definitely not let him ruin my almost perfect grade record over this silly beef between us.
Never in a million years.
"Well, what are you doing here? Here to mock me and torture me further?" I snap at him, now feeling too worked up from all this.
Like, could I have a moment of peace in my life without matters relating to him messing it up?
"Uhhh... I was told to meet you after class?" He suddenly looks away, facing the teacher now.
It becomes clear that he had infact not come here for me.
My cheeks flush instantly with embarrassment when he begins conversing with the teacher while I stand there mortified.
Again, I let him mess with my head and humiliated myself in the process.
Now, he probably thinks I'm one of his fan girls that can't get over him cause I've seen his dick.
Damn it.
"Freya? You okay?" Adam shows up by my side suddenly.
I guess he's been waiting for me on the sidelines. Now he approaches, touching my forehead with his palm. "Your face is red... Do you have a fever?" He asks.
No, I just made a fool of myself infront of my mortal enemy, but I don't say that, of course. I just force a smile, letting him know that I'm fine.
Silas suddenly turns to the both of us while half- listening to whatever Mrs. Michael is saying.
His eyes move from Adam and back to me. This time, his blank stare turns to a glare just like it had been in class.
Just what the hell is his problem with me?
I glare back because I do not wish to be looked down upon. He might have pulled a fast one on me, but I was done letting him affect me.
And just when I think it can't get worse, another person shows up.
"Mrs. Michael, I'd like to request a group change."
Elena says, suddenly popping up from behind Silas as well.
She stands too close to him, smirking like the little bitch she is and resting an arm on his shoulder casually, like he's her property.
I scoff mentally just watching them, even more annoyed now.
We get that they're in some messed up relationship, they don't need to constantly rub it in everyone's face.
"I know you said you wouldn't but, as a star student and the daughter of the school's biggest sponsor, I would like to formally submit a request." She says proudly with her shoulders raised higher than her head.
There she goes, throwing her titles in the air obnoxiously and expecting the whole world to bow at her feet. Even my wolf rolls her eyes at her entitlement.
Except Mrs. Michael looks anything but pleased, folding her arms now.
"I see the entire group is here to complain about my choices." She begins fuming immediately. "Uh... actually, you called me here..." Silas points out.
"I was just standing on the sidelines..." Adam too.
"Enough. If any one of you makes a complaint again, you will all be failing this course." She snaps at all of us now that her patience runs thin.
I watch the look of horror on Elena's face now that her nepotism isn't as effective as she hoped, and I'm immediately satisfied by it. Maybe all this wouldn't be so bad.
"But..." She tries to chime in again, probably about all her father's achievements and contributions while pouting like a troubled child, but she doesn't let her get what she wants.
"I'm warning you." Mrs. Michael snaps again, pointing at Elena this time.
Her shoulders slump instantly in defeat while she bites on her lips, frowning. I have to puff my cheeks up to stifle the laugh threatening to burst out of me.
Her eyes catch mine and she instantly glares, like it's my fault we're stuck together.
"You." Mrs. Michael says, suddenly pointing to Adam. He looks back at first. On realizing there's no one there, he turns to her again, pointing at himself in confusion
"Me...?" "You're in charge of this group." She announces to all of us dryly. "Now leave, all of you." She says, almost shouting.
I can hear just how much she's frustrated and begins walking out the door.
Elena begrudgingly agrees to leave, stomping her feet on the way out next to Silas, who walks quietly. Once we're all out, we stand there silently for a while.
All the time, I feel Silas' eyes on the back of my neck. That puts me on alert and makes goosebumps rise on my skin.
I feel so uncomfortable already and I can already imagine how this week is going to be like. "Okay, guys... I'm sure none of us wants to fail this project." Adam begins, finally seeing that no one wants to say anything.
"As the group leader, I want to start by nominating
Freya as my assistant." He adds with that big smile despite the tension.
My eyes widen in shock but the pat he suddenly drops on my back calms me instantly.
That's right. Adam was right next to me. I guess I had some sort of support in this situation.
"No way... I'm not letting either of you control anything." Elena butts in, disagreeing with everything, which is of course expected of her.
If she doesn't disagree, then she isn't the stuck up bitch we know her as.
"Then perhaps, you want to fail?" I say, wanting to point out the fact that Adam was personally assigned for the role and what he says goes. "Excuse you? I'm sorry, did I hear someone talking?"
She faces me now with smoke coming out of her ears. Very entertaining to watch, I might add.
"Oh... didn't know you had gone deaf since the last time we spoke. My bad." I respond.
She huffs and puffs, rolling her eyes at me. "You're just bitter because Silas doesn't want you again."
Ouch...
Her statement rubs me off the wrong way instantly. There she goes again, always pointing out Silas' interest as a shield every single time we clash. It was like the only sensible come back she could come up with.
How she had the amazing boyfriend no one else could keep.
"Maybe if I based my self-worth on a guy wanting me like you do, that would have been a sick burn, but the only thing burned out is my interest in whatever you have to say." I say coldly, surprising her by how unaffected I am.
Silas blurts into a cackle only briefly before composing himself quickly and coughing into his palm to pass the outburst as a throat itch.
"Elena, stop it." He says once he's held himself back properly, but I can still see that little mischievous glint in his eyes.
It's only very brief but it sets my heart on a faster pace again, till I pry my eyes away from him.
Whatever I saw doesn't matter again, I remind myself. "Thank you, Silas." Adam nods in his direction." Now, let's meet in the library after school starting from today, so we can start piecing this project early, so that we can be done with it sooner." He adds. "Sure." I say.
"Whatever." Elena mumbles
"Great... so, see you guys then." Adam waves playfully at the two and without a second more, they both turn the other direction and begin walking away. Adam turns as well but stops once he realizes I'm glued to my spot, watching them as they slowly walk away.
"Freya?"
"Adam, just wait a bit, there's something I want to do." Before he can ask what it is and satisfy his curiosity, I jog up to the other two, just a bit since they haven't gone too far.
I stretch out my arm and grab onto his shirt, just a little part of it with the tips of my fingers. He pauses just like that, like some robot.
I don't even need to say his name and he swerves to me instantly... too quickly. It's like he already knows it's me, so he doesn't seem surprised at all. For a second, I think he might be desperate to see me till I meet his cold eyes again and that hope dies off like every single one I keep having.
He doesn't ask what I want though, just watching me with that look I can't quite place my finger on. "I know you're probably wondering why I stopped you." I start once my breathing is a lot calmer from the slight jog.
He says nothing.
"Well, I'm not here to patch things up with you. I've given up on that." I say again.
Why am I even telling him this? It's not like he cares.
Yet again, he stays silent.
I sigh, almost regretting starting this already weird exchange but I need to push through, to get over all this bullcrap out of my way.
I let go of his shirt, finally stretching my hand forward. He stares at it for a while, now with a raised eyebrow. "Let's call a truce for the duration of this project." I rush through the sentence before I chicken out.
He remains quiet for a while and I begin thinking he's going to leave me hanging...
That is until the weirdest thing happens. It starts looking like he's trying too hard to contain his smirk, until he finally lets himself smile...
The typical prideful Silas smile that he's used to win countless hearts.
The same one that had conquered mine.
He stretches out his arm and shakes mine firmly, but lingers.
I feel static crawling up my arm and sending heat all through my body dangerously. Then he speaks finally in a clear voice. "Fine... Let's have a truce, Freya."
