: RAY OF HOPE
SILAS' POV:
I couldn't go after her even if I wanted to, even when I had hurt her so much and constantly.
I could only hold her close to my heart and swear on everything that I had changed because of her and that everything I do now is for her safety.
All I could do was stand and watch Adam go after her.
I am nothing but the powerless prince in this story... unable to pursue the woman he wants because he is bound by a contract with his father.
I couldn't risk being seen chasing her outside the library in an open space.
I know all this puts the wheels of regret still spinning faster within me as I finally walk into my room, drenched from the rain's beatings.
I restlessly pace around the room, attempting to contain my urge to find her and beg for forgiveness. She must already be assuming the worst possible things at this point.
"Damn it!" I swear out loud.
I was too engrossed in dealing with Adam to notice when she had entered the library and started listening in on us. This isn't what I wanted.
Fucking Adam just had to make a scene about it in the library.
I punch my hand into the wall to let out some stress, damaging the polished wood in the process.
Just then, three knocks echo from the door.
I crack my knuckles, composing myself again before answering.
"The door's open." I say, walking over to my bed and sitting on it while facing the door.
It slowly pulls open up, revealing Lucas.
My shoulders tense up a bit, knowing he's one of Father's spies now.
I remind myself that aside from the make out in the very empty library earlier today, I had made sure to stay a good distance away from Freya, so it couldn't be because of a summon from father that he's knocking on my door.
We hadn't spoken properly since finding out he had played a role in Freya's kidnapping. The rip in our relationship seemed and still seemed irreparable though he will be my zeta.
"What is it?" I ask coldly once he walks in, closing the door behind him.
His expression is blank and void of emotions, perfect for an emotionless piece of work he is.
"That's a bit cold for someone you haven't spoken to in a while." He says finally, breaking from his lifeless mien into a softer, more playful look like the old Lucas.
I don't buy it.
"For good reason." I respond.
"That is fair... I did fuck up in lots of ways." He admits, stepping deeper into the room.
"Ways you cannot comprehend." I say, still bitter about the whole fiasco.
He could never really understand the feeling of depending on someone, only to find out they had been actively stabbing you in the back and making sure the sore never heals up.
"Believe me... I'm still trying to pay for my crimes. I quit working for your father... He threatened to get a new Zeta from a high ranking, respectable family to replace me and support you." He points out with the wide smile never faltering while he looks around at the room décor he's seen a million times.
"Well... sounds typical of him."
Typical father, rewarding disloyalty to himself handsomely.
"Yes, a well-deserved punishment for teaming up with him in the first place." He agrees, knowing fully well what his demotion would mean for him...
For us.
The only reason we had been allowed to be friends was because Father had selected him when we were younger.
But I don't want to think about that right now... I have more pressing matters that plague my mind, even despite the slight sting to my chest hearing the new information from him.
"Why are you here? To let me know you're not a spy anymore?"
"No, that's just information I wanted to let you know but it's beside the point. I heard what happened with Freya from Adam."
My brows furrow as the memory plunges into my mind again; the fight that shouldn't have happened.
I sigh, rubbing the temples of my throbbing head.
"I forget that both of you are roommates sometimes."
Lucas chuckles at my discomfort, like he always used to, stopping right by the side of my bed. "Yeah. Minutes after he got back, I got a call from
Xena, saying she wants to meet up... She sounded very distressed, probably in tears as well. I think Freya might have told her."
"Good." I respond simply.
I have no sympathy to offer now that karma is biting him in the ass.
"Yeah... the band aid needed to be ripped off at some point. I took everything for granted and I guess the reward is losing it all, one by one." He smiles, but it looks painful.
I groan from watching him. I want to hate him so much now, but he just seems so pathetic that I almost feel bad for him.
"True." I say coldly. "The price we pay for having too much ambition."
"And what about you? How have you been holding up being forced with Elena again?"
I remember he's the only other person aside Elena that knows of the dreaded deal I had made to keep Freya safe.
I growl now, gnashing on my teeth.
"Yeah. In the end, I was forced to bend and heed to my duties as future Alpha just like you had vehemently preached. The relationship you so desperately wanted got put back together... At least, you're happy with that much." I snap, truly not wanting to talk about this with him.
I don't want him to gloat.
He suddenly burst into fits of laughter, clutching onto his gut for a while that took me by surprise. I don't remember saying anything funny.
After a second, he finally calms down, wiping a tear.
"God, no. She's too problematic and impatient to rule over anything, let alone an entire kingdom. She's what Xena would call a grade A bitch." He points out.
"Funny, I find that hard to believe." I respond dryly. "Look, everything I did, I did for you because your father made me believe that it had to be done for my best friend. Does that sound familiar to you? That's probably the mindset driving you further away from Freya." He explains.
"Yes, it does sound familiar. If you're here to mock me for being trapped in a situation similar to yours and ask me how it feels, I'm in no mood to entertain you, Lucas." I snap once more. Again, I really don't want him to gloat.
"You're really dense. My point is your father is the literal king of convincing everyone that they're helpless and at his will to bend and mold. Even now, you think the only way to keep Freya safe is listening to him." He explains further.
I silently watch him now.
All that is true, I had learned the hard way that just doing things his way was the best way to avoid conflicts, and he reimbursed that into me by getting Mother on his side every time.
"I refused to do his bidding and he's so convinced that you'd hate me enough to not want my opinion on anything and the solitude would be my punishment." Lucas continues. "I do though." I deadpan. Lucas rolls his eyes, groaning in annoyance.
"Silas... there are other ways you can be with Freya, regardless of what King Darius wants. You can chase after her and frolic in the sun like a bunch of love sick puppies, and he would have no power over you. The only thing that could possibly stop you is that she needs to be an Alpha female, which she already is."
Just like that, he's gripped my attention and I'm leaning forward.
"Speak, I'm listening."
"First off... Why does he want this bond between you and Elena so bad? Because he needs the Crescent Moon pack to not form their own federation, and yield to our Bloodmoon pack instead, and he's doing that through marriage."
"I know all that." I point out dryly.
He ignores me and continues. "There are other ways to form a union besides marriage. The Crescent Moon pack just has to sign a peace agreement that prevents any uprising or wars for the next hundred years, in exchange for letting the Crescent Moon pack have more business rights and ownership of a few mines at our disposal. They get richer and still acknowledge themselves as underneath the Bloodmoon." He explains. Everything he says makes sense. They would have another form of power that seems more profitable than a marriage union.
But that leaves ne more question.
"Why hadn't my father done this instead of marriage?" I ask
"I suspect two reasons. We'd be indirectly making them richer than most other packs, making their ranks in power just slightly below ours. There would e a chance of an uprising in maybe the next three hundred years."
"The second?" I ask.
Lucas remains silent for a while. His aloof exterior melting into a more serious and ticked off demeanor.
"In his own sick mind, watching you bend to his will and playing games with everyone was entertaining." He says coldly.
The look in his eyes says enough of how being of said sick games had affected him.
I nod slowly, taking in all he said slowly, for the first time, seeing some ray of hope.
"The loophole is that the agreement can be made with the heir apparently, so you don't need to meet the main Alpha of Crescent Moon for it."
"So, I just need to get Elena to sign it?" I ask, looking up to him now.
"Yeah." He nods "And I would be free from the betrothal?"
"Yes." He nods again. The tension in my shoulders loosens almost instantly and I fall back onto my bed, letting out the longest breath of relief I have had in a while. I don't want to bank so much hope on it before it's done, but damn...
The thought of being with Freya plasters a smile on my face.
I wipe it off quickly though, remembering Lucas is still here. I sit up again, facing him with my new suspicion.
"Why are you telling me all this? Your former master throws you out and now, you want to get on my good side and gain my favor?"
"No... it's far from that. You're my best friend, dude... and I stabbed you in the back. I just wanted to make up for it, so I did some research to set you free, so you won't be bound by the same chain that held me." I see the sincerity in his eyes and they reach me. We aren't all perfect after all.
I simply nod, having nothing to say to his words right now.
He nods as well, turning to leave.
"Lucas?"
"Yeah." He stops again, turning to me. "You know... father may dismiss you but I only have one Zeta. I have a new mission for you." His smile widens and reaches his eyes, exposing his entire dentition.
"Yes, Alpha!"
