FREYA'S POV
The whole cafeteria scene plagues my mind endlessly, ruining every mental wall I had painstakingly built around thoughts of Silas. Just when I was getting the hang of it, accepting what was to be my new life, he walks in and chucks it all in turmoil and leaves.
I know it's impossible, incomprehensive, but I wonder if there's some sincerity in him. If possibly, my absence confused and left a little discomfort in his mind just as it had me. Then maybe he's actually into me.
It isn't something I should be pleased with. He's with someone already and I still needed to steer clear, yet the possibilities please my heart just a bit.
The next day seems less dull and even more promising than typical. Is it because Xena would be returning or something else?
Who knows?
"Hey."
I close my locker turning to Adam. He gives his normal charming smile, made to break hearts, and winks at me. I roll my eyes at his antics but offer a smile nevertheless. It's weird how we've sort of grown a bit closer over the past few days especially with Xena being absent. He's the only other person I feel comfortable enough to talk to.
"You look a bit different today." He mutters observing my face. "What?"
"Happier?"
I try to hide the tint in my cheeks, looking away.
"A-Actually, I did something with my hair."
He takes a moment to think on it before shrugging,
"Whatever it is, you look nice."
"Thank you."
I start walking down the hallway and he falls in place next to me. "Where you headed?"
"It's my free period, so was planning on doing some reading for a test tomorrow."
"Nice, I'll follow."
I stop right in the middle of the hallway, passing him a look.
"Don't you have class?"
He shrugs like it's nothing.
"You're impossible." I sigh, making my way to the school garden for some outdoor reading.
The walk is short and we soon turn into an open porch with stairs leading down to a vast open area.
I inhale the deep and exhale the air; it's fresh, just the atmosphere I need.
Adam jogs down the steps before I can, picking a spot for us. I follow.
"You're not really going to read, are you?" He begins as soon as I open the first textbook. I'm regretting letting him follow me too soon.
"Of course not. I'm just going to stare at the pages till I'm bored of it."
"Nerd."
I scoff. "Not everyone can live off their good looks and close connections with the Alpha King. Some of us want an actual future." "You think I look good?"
I groan, slamming my textbook shut and glaring at him. As nice as it is to have someone to talk to, he's exceptionally insufferable.
"Adam, if you talk one more time, I swear I'm going to..."
The sight behind him catches my attention instantly. Maybe I had spoken too soon about the day seeming brighter because now a dark cloud suddenly seems to hover around everything.
There's Silas and Elena together again, holding hands, talking like they've never been so in love before. The jerk, who had seemed so bothered with me having lunch with his friend, slides his arm around her waist and lets her rest her head on his jacked-up shoulders.
My heart falls. bitter taste fills my mouth too quickly. I turn away, resting my back against the backrest of our bench.
"What's up with you?"
I say nothing and just stare.
I've been made fool of again. Is this just part of what he did to girls? Make them think he's into them and secretly goes back to his girlfriend when the show's over?
Stupid.
I slap my forehead with the heel of my palm. I keep letting myself believe him no matter how much shit he really is.
Stupid.
I try to slap my forehead again but Adam catches my smaller hands.
by the wrist, preventing the impact. I'm forced to look up to him and there's this solemn look in his eyes again like he understands me, like he can somehow shield me from all this pain I don't know why I'm feeling.
"Stop that." He speaks too softly. I wish Silas could speak as softly as that and if he could, what it would sound like if he speaks to Elena.
"Adam..." It's all I say. The hurt feels almost physical and my wolf writhes in it.
Why are you in pain? I ask my wolf. Why do you get all weird when he's around? But she only whimpers.
"I know." Adam says. Maybe it's how he says it or the look in his eyes. If he's a liar, he's a damn good one, because I believe him.
"I will treat you better. Listen to you rant about boring classes, watch you stare at book pages till you are bored, and hold your hand so you don't hurt yourself. I could do more too." He's saying it like I'm heartbroken and he can fix my pieces, but I can't be if I've never liked Silas.
I don't like him, I can't. And yet it hurts watching him with her.
Because he made a fool of me or is it something else?
"What are you talking about?"
He seems quiet for a while, just looking at me with a billion thoughts flashing through his mind but he shares none of them. He smiles quickly like he didn't seem so tensed seconds ago.
"I just want you to know that I'm here too."
I nod.
"Let's go back in. Suddenly not in the mood to read outside."
"Thank god. Was going to get you away from those books one way or another." He jokes, jumping to his feet.
"How exactly are you in senior class?"
He shrugs like it's a mystery he hasn't figured out yet and his expression throws me into fits of laughter while we exit.
All the while, I try my best not to stop and turn once I feel his fiery eyes watching me from behind.
The fourth paper crashes onto the back of my head harder than the last three and my patience is currently hanging by a loose thread. Right in the middle of chemistry class while I practice my chemical reactions, Elena, who sadly takes the same class as I do, decides she's in the mood to shower me with paper balls.
I want to hit back but I'm smart enough to know how much of a trap it was.
Since the moon ceremony, where she had won the race and gotten the amity flag, according to hearsay, she's been given the title of
Alpha of the month. It's like being the prom queen, instead the title lasted for a month and a few privileges included her doing anything she wanted to her fellow-subjects.
With the authority she had, it's best to steer clear from her. Elena is more like an evil prom queen than anything else. Unfortunately, just simply avoiding her isn't going to cut it for me, seeing as just last two weeks ago, rumors had been spreading that involved me and her boyfriend.
I had thought she wasn't going to abuse the power since she had been quiet for a while but for some reason, she has chosen today.
As soon as the bell rings, I try to dash out of class to avoid her but she's onto me and steps into my way before I can leave.
"Hey, roomie." Her smile is fake but she looks beautiful nevertheless.
It's sad seeing such a flawless person pine over a jerk like Silas. Then again, I'm being a hypocrite.
"What do you want, Elena? Wasn't torturing me in class enough for you?" She laughs, almost cynically. It's frightening.
"You think that's torture? You haven't seen anything yet. You love attention, don't you?" She takes a step closer so she's all in my face
I sigh.
"Really, we're going to do a showdown right here in class?" I'm drawl.
She already had her boyfriend back, I still can't understand what she wants from me.
Her smile doesn't waver and I figure she has something planned for me.
"Lila."
Lila, who's been standing behind her like a minion, steps forward with a cart of milk she's been holding all this time, pulling it open.
The rancid smell of expired milk suddenly chokes me. I wonder how she's been able to carry it with her.
"Drink it."
She gestures the milk cart towards me. I look at her like she's gone crazy.
"Hell no!"
"I'm Alpha of the month, dear, you can't refuse me. Drink it."
I try to take a step back but Lila grabs ahold of me first and chugs it down my throat the moment I open wide and scream.
