: RUMOR HAS IT
SILAS' POV:
"Any luck yet?" I ask once I reach the bottom of the stairwell right where Lucas stands absentmindedly.
He turns to me as I descend, revealing the heavy eye bags under his eyes in resemblance to mine.
How long has it been? 3 days?
There's no clause in pack constitution about an Alpha being with an omega, which says a lot about just how much stigma they face.
My heart goes out to Freya. Had I been a bit too harsh?
I haven't seen her in days.
My wolf and I are desperate to see her again, but I've shrugged it off, telling myself that maybe we just needed space and busied myself with this project for most of the time so I wouldn't go into a frenzy and find her.
I can't help but feel like something is wrong somewhere though.
Lucas yawns now.
"No luck. Silas, I really don't think we're going to find whatever it is you're looking for. Laws aren't usually made to favor the minority."
He's right.
Just one of the many things that made no sense that I needed to change once I took over the mantle of power from my father.
The system needed to be fixed.
"I haven't seen Xena in days because of this much research... if I go another day without a break, I might just break down." He complains.
I agree with him.
No matter how pissed off I am, I still miss Freya... I want to simply be in her vicinity and take in her sweet scent to calm my nerves.
Wrap myself around her and keep her as mine. It's like an instinct to claim her and the desire to be with her every passing moment has grown since mating.
She's probably in her room right now... I take a mentally note to drop by right after school.
We both walk up the stairs leading to the school entrance and push through the double doors.
The first thing I notice once I'm in is the instant switch in energy around us.
There's more murmuring and mumbling than usual, which comes to a silent halt as soon as I walk by.
I'm used to stares being adverted and silence in my presence, but there's something completely different about this particular reaction.
It's as though they know something they're too scared to talk about around me, but I ignore it.
I have more important things on my mind other than whatever gossip has been sprung up by a group of insignificant wolfs.
Just as I pass a locker though, I notice a poster... a poster having Freya's face printed on it, which quickly catches my eyes and I stop to read the words written under it.
In only seconds of reading, I freeze and my eyes widen.
Series of useless words bubbling down to one fucking narrative.
'... Freya Willow, one of our recent transfer students, was revealed to be a fraud. She's not really an alpha or a high ranking wolf but actually an Omega changing her status through illegal means.'
"What the fuck?" Lucas comments from reading it right by my side just as shocked as I am.
What the fuck is this goddamned exaggeration?
I lurch my fist forward, smashing into the filer and locker, in the process seething instantly.
It's only now I realize that it's not the only one... There are more than a few posted around school, most likely in every hallway.
Even without evidence whatsoever, this perpetrator ipurposefully plants the idea in everyone's head, making them question what they already know.
"Fucking hell!" I growl, stalking away.
"Silas, wait!" Lucas runs after me.
I walk aimlessly till I spot an empty class room and step in, pacing round in anger.
Who the fuck would have done this? Why the fuck would they do this? How did they even know the secret?
So many questions race through my mind, but one thing is certain, I would skin them alive with my bare hands once I get the chance to.
"Silas, calm down. Let's not do something irrational." Lucas walks in.
"Calm down? This rumor could reach higher authorities wanting to run an investigation on her.
How the fuck did they even find out? Did you tell anyone?" I face him now, glaring.
There's still a chance he could be a spy for my father getting close to me to get information.
"I swear to goddess, Lucas, if you had something to do with this..."
"I didn't do anything. I've been too busy helping you to do all this, remember?"
"You could have gotten help." I point out coldly.
"I get that you're not going to completely stop being suspicious of me, but I swear, I had nothing to do with this."
I watch him momentarily, his eyes, his expression; I listen to the pace of his heart beat and deduce that he's telling the truth.
"Then who is it?"
"I have one suspect in mind and I'm sure you're thinking what I'm thinking. It's most likely-"
Xena suddenly barges into the classroom, pushing the door hard enough that they almost fly off the hinges holding them in place.
Her face is as red as a tomato.
"Silas, you fucking asshole!" She yells very dramatically, lunging for me instantly but Lucas quickly grabs onto her before she gets close enough to me.
"You freaking back stabbing bastard!" She screams louder, trying to free herself from Lucas' hold.
"Xena, calm down!"
"Don't you dare try to protect him right now, Lucas.
Let me go." She yells, desperately reaching out to me.
I have no time for whatever has crawled up her ass, making her so violent this morning.
Instead, I rub my temples and sigh. "What is it now?" I ask.
"Don't act like you don't already fucking know. Freya trusted you even though she was scared, but you were the person she chose to reveal her secret to, but you went behind her back and leaked out her secret."
"What?" Lucas and I say in unison, completely confused by what she's saying.
"She told me of course, right after you abandoned her and ran off, and I found her."
She's saying a lot of things that don't make sense and aren't true, which start to confuse me even further.
"She ran away because of you." "Freya's gone?" Lucas asks now.
I freeze, looking at the both of them hearing the news.
"Of course she is, not like he would care..." She refers to me now. "It was all just a joke to him."
I can't take her disrespect anymore, and the things she uncontrollably reveals in the process sets my wolf on edge and me seething dangerously.
I stalk close to both of them, baring my fangs and growling.
"I would never tell anyone about her." I grit each word one by one as clearly as possible, so she doesn't misinterpret them.
Her once insufferably leaking mouth keeps shut once
I'm finally standing face to face with her, now unable to spit those insults as freely as she had before. I walk away from her once she's finally calm again.
"How else did it leak out then?" she asks again after a long pause of silence.
The very same question I've been asking myself since
I found out.
"Xena, he's telling the truth. He never leaked it out." Lucas says, now defending me.
"You know about it too?" She asks, raising her brow.
"Well...it's important that I know, so it's different."
She scoffs, hearing his reason for knowing, but brushes it off quickly.
"Even if you didn't, I can't believe you'd change how you feel about her just because her status has changed. She's your mate for fuck's sake" "Wait... Freya is your mate?" Lucas jumps into the conversation with his eyes wide in shock.
That's right, I haven't revealed that to him yet, but we both ignore him.
"That's farther from the truth. Yes, I was especially pissed that she hid this all this while and lied to all of us, but aside from that, I don't care what she is." Whatever she is doesn't change what she means to be and especially now that she's my mate, my other half, I will never let go of her.
No one will stand in my way. "Well, that's not what she thinks. She thinks you plan on rejecting her. That's why she ran away from you and everyone." Xena explains.
Just from how she speaks so expertly, I already know she knows where Freya is.
I already feel bad, terrible that she had been pushed to get away from me. My gut feeling had been right all this time but I had pushed all that aside selfishly.
I want to make it up to her now, and prove to her that nothing else matters.
"Where is she?" I ask.
"I definitely won't tell you." Xena announces stubbornly.
My wolf sees her as a threat immediately, trying to come between us and I see red.
Again, I stalk up to her, wanting to get the information out of her by any means possible but Lucas tries to stop me, standing between us like before.
"Silas..."
I toss him aside before he can complete the words I know he's about to say, leaving Xena alone right in front of me as I willingly let my dominant aura out to remind her who the Alpha is. Her head bows low automatically as I ask the question the second time as a warning.
"WHERE IS MY MATE?"
