FREYA'S POV
"Elena freaking planned this," I scream in a hushed tone to Xena.
She stares into space deep in thoughts while I panic like a crazy person right beside her.
"What am I going to do? This is obviously some trap. How am I going to win against her?"
She's definitely going to rearrange my face if I try. I hyperventilate, feeling anxiety take over me quickly.
"Calm down, Freya, you're going to kill this." Her focus is back on me and she's rooting for me. "Go show her who's boss."
I gulp down the tight ball in my throat and slowly approach the center. The crowd's mumbling is incessant and all eyes are on me and my opponent now.
She smirks like the witch she is, cracking her knuckles. I say my final prayer and look at Xena one last time before my end. She winks at me with a thumbs-up, her conviction is sure that I am going to emerge victorious.
Mine isn't.
The gong rings as we enter our stance. She flexes her shoulders first, walking round in circles and I follow her lead, mostly because I want to avoid what is inevitable, but then fuck it.
This is my only chance to get back at her and even if I am going to wind up in a hospital bed, I sure as hell will leave a scar on her face.
She moves swiftly towards me to attack and I brace myself for impact, tightening my fist.
Her pace suddenly slows down for some reason, her face looking less snarky and more contorted. I waste no time in case it's a trap and throw a punch right in her face as hard as I can.
My clenched fist smacks her across the face and the crowd gasps in disbelief. I step back, surprised she hadn't dodged it and instead, takes the blow to her face.
She groans in pain, staggering back then quickly vomits right there on the grass infront of everyone. Her face looks pale and her nose is bleeding. She sways weakly for a while before dropping onto the floor unconscious.
What the hell just happened?
Seconds of silence pass before the crowd goes wild, cheering for me. It's clear they had no faith that I would make it out unscathed. I stumble towards Xena, still confused about how I had survived the ordeal.
She hugs me quickly, almost squeezing the life out of me then pulling away. Her smile is as wide and bright as the sun.
"See, I told you you were going to be fine."
"Yeah, except I'm still clueless about what just happened."
Xena remains silent, smiling naughtily for some reason and then it hits me.
"Wait, you did do something, didn't you?"
She shrugs playfully and winks at me.
"No way, what did you do?" I gasp.
She had to have done something. I know for a fact it wasn't just my punch that had rendered her unconscious.
"Well, I wanted to get back at her for what she did to you. I got some of my friends to distract her in the cafeteria before lacing her food with a special drug I engineered. It basically induces a loss in strength and eventually muscle paralysis. Side effects include nose bleeding, vomiting, explosive diarrhea and blackouts. She was always going to lose; I just didn't expect you'd be the one going against her."
"You drugged her? What if you're caught?"
"Relax, it's full proof. The people involved have bones to pick with her but couldn't stand against her outrightly. They were more than happy to help."
I'm stupefied. I want to scold her for risking so much for me when she could get expelled if she's caught, yet a part of me is simply elated and truly impressed by the connections she has. I feel sudden pride in having her as my friend.
"She did deserve it."
"She deserves worse. She's lucky it's not a laxative I had snuck in there." Xena scoffs, thinking about just how much Elena truly deserves and I agree with her.
I smile, hugging Xena again. "Is it possible that I suddenly love you more?"
"You better be my slave by the time I'm done with her." She jokes, resting into our warm embrace.
For the first time in a while, I feel a mixture of pure joy and satisfaction. I feel cherished by someone and a part of something big. It's a weird feeling that makes my heart pulse and I like it.
The class is over and the crowd begins to disperse back into school. Xena and I walk side by side with our arms intertwined and I quickly feel his presence.
I look by my right and see Silas. He stands casually against a wall with his arms tucked coolly in his pocket. He stares at me with a deep intensity and a questioning gaze like he's indeed trying to figure me out.
At first, I wonder if we're going to have issues now that I punched his girlfriend but it's not anger or resentment I see in his eyes.
I hate the inquisitive gaze as it seems like he could unravel my secrets in an instance. A fear I had pushed behind me for a while quickly resurfaces and paranoia makes me question if he suspects me and my secret.
I turn my face away quickly before he finds some answer written on my forehead. I double my pace and dragging Xena along despite her protests.
It's dark, like pitch black all round me and the only source of light is from the bright red moon. I'm standing in the middle of an unrecognizable wood and it doesn't take long for me to realize something is wrong.
Something just isn't right with the air around me, it feels almost unreal.
A feeling of dread engulfs me as I make my way through the dark mysterious forest. Suddenly, I hear growling behind me. I turn to see blazing red eyes staring back at me. The animal is a rabid looking wolf twice my size with froth spilling from its mouth.
Run!
The words echo in my head as I begin running as fast as my feet can take me. For some reason, I can't turn into my wolf which only settles more panic within me.
I run till my chest hurts and the branches in my way rip and tear away my skin. It lunges in the air after me but suddenly, I'm falling off a cliff, screaming my lungs out.
The fall seems endless.
"Child." A voice echoes in my head as I fall along with a high pitched sound that pinches at my earlobes. The pain only intensifies and my head throbs painfully.
"Child." It calls again louder.
I scream as the ringing sound begins to vibrate in my skull as though seeking to shatter me before I hit whatever surface I'm falling to. "Remember..." The voice is familiar but I'm in too much pain to figure it out. "...remember our bargain."
"Leave me alone!" I yell back, covering my ears but it does nothing to help. I feel wetness in my ears and I assume its blood. "Remember." The voice repeats again. I'm still falling in an endless abyss, tormented by screeching in my ear.
The sound suddenly lightens up and there's less pain. I suddenly stop falling and just hover. The red moon is gone and I'm surrounded by nothingness as chilling silence follows. I feel like I can breathe again and I open my eyes.
Staring back at me are two pair of eyes with a dark purple glint of mischief in them. Terror racks through my body, grips me in tight bounds. My body is frozen.
"Remember, child..." the voice is more recognizable now. I've seen those mischievous eyes right before my whole life change with the elixir. "...my favor." The wizard's eyes glimmer now. I'm almost speechless.
"What do you want?" My lips move on their own. I'm gripped with fear yet somehow, I'm able to speak to him.
The eyes snicker at me.
"My favor is simple child and you will know soon enough. Get close to the Alpha prince for now. I will tell you when the time is right."
"Wait, why do I need to get close to him?"
"I will tell you when the time is right."
I'm suddenly falling again with an even faster momentum.
"Wait!" I scream but his final words echo in the back of my mind over and over again.
When the time is right.
I crash into my bed in a pool of sweat, waking up from the most terrible dream.
