FREYA'S POV
I'm extremely pissed as I storm away from them, tossing what's left of my meal in the nearby trash can and walking out of the cafeteria. There are still a few minutes of lunchtime, so the hallway is barely filled with students.
I'm fed up with Elena and that high horse she's always sitting on that makes her think it's okay to talk shit about anyone because she could. And then there's Silas, sitting there and watching his bitch girlfriend talk shit about me a few minutes after asking me out on some stupid date. It's like everyone is crazy and on some drug and I'm the only sane she-wolf walking around.
I can't imagine why such toxicity is even allowed to exist.
I don't have a destination, so I just walk to let some steam out of my system whilst having half the mind to turn Silas down later.
Stay away, Xena had warned from the very beginning. Damn right, I will.
I'm already thinking up some excuse to bail when I briefly feel a chilling breeze pass by me, which is strange as there's no large windows insight for a draft to get in. I keep walking when I hear an inaudible whisper.
I stop, looking around me. A few students pass by but no one is really looking in my direction.
Must be my imagination.
I take a few more steps further when I hear the whisper in my ears again. It's louder and I can make out the words.
"Freya..."
The voice is coarse and dry. I swerve around again, but no one is looking my way or trying to talk to me. The whisper calls my name once more and I'm very sure now that it's not coming from anyone around me.
"What the hell is going on?" I mutter to myself.
I'm freaked out a bit and rub my eyes under the suspicion that I'm hallucinating due to stress. The voice calls me again, louder and fiercer, making me jump in fright. A few eyes turn to me with questioning looks.
"Freya..."
Clearly, I am hallucinating.
It seems now that the voice is indeed coming from a direction. I feel something drawing me so I follow, walking down the hall and taking a turn into the female bathroom.
It's empty. There's no way anyone's here yet I hear the call again. "Freya... Look in the mirror."
I feel chills grasping my spine now. A part of me is screaming to run and find Xena. The other part wants me to sit this through and find the source of the call. I take a deep breath of courage, turning to the large mirrors and walking closer to them.
The bright lights begin to blink unceasingly, and the floors trembles like an earthquake is about to ensue. I grab onto the sink infront of me for balance and everywhere suddenly grows quiet.
I look up slowly into the mirror right in front of me and staring back at me is a ghastly figure with glowing purple eyes.
I stumble backward, screaming my lungs out and the door suddenly opens.
A female student walks in and stares at me like I've lost my marbles. I bite my lips as she walks up to the sink, rinsing her hands and fixing her hair like all is well. The figure in the mirror still stares back at me while this stranger acts like it's some ordinary Thursday afternoon.
"Hello, child." The figure calls to me with a sneer and I jump-started again.
"Wizard?" It all makes partial sense now. I'm still dreaming.
The girl turns to look at me again with her eyebrows raised. She stares at me like I'm some psycho. Clearly, she's the crazy one using the mirror to touch up her face when someone is standing in the middle of it.
"She can't see or hear me, only you can." He fills me in as though reading my thoughts.
I look at her again. The creeped-out stare she's been giving me makes more sense now.
I wait for her to do whatever she's doing quickly and leave before I look back at the silhouette in the mirror.
"Wizard?"
I walk closer now, not believing my eyes.
"I'm still having that nightmare, aren't I?" I mutter.
"It wasn't a nightmare and no you're not dreaming."
He smiles, snickering like some mischievous cat. It echoes in my brain, rubbing me off the wrong way. I feel the same chills from my dream and the fear in the pit of my stomach settles a bit more. I don't know why whatever is happening is happening.
"How are you here?"
"Magic, of course. You shouldn't be so surprised seeing as your current predicament is as a result of it."
I nod slowly.
"And why are you here?"
His sickening smile suddenly grows wider into a mad grin. The purple glimmer in his eyes intensifies and my instincts tell me what's to come next isn't good.
"It seems you've forgotten."
"Forgotten what?"
"What you weren't supposed to forget."
Now he's just spinning me around.
"I don't understand."
"Just as I gave, I've come to collect. You owe me a favor, Freya
Willow."
I definitely don't remember telling him my full name, but that's not the creepiest thing that's happening right now.
Taking a deep breath, I fold my hands.
"Fine, that's alright. What do you want?"
"I told you in your dream."
My mind falls back to the last bit that blurred in my mind, something about getting close to Silas. That last bid didn't make sense so I had thought I had just imagined it, but it wasn't just my imagination.
"Why do you need me to get closer to Silas?"
"It's a secret." He chuckles.
I groan, frustrated.
"Look here, old man. I'm not trying to get closer to that asshole, so maybe if there's something else you want me to do for you, I'd be glad to oblige."
"It doesn't work that way, child. I need something from the Alpha prince and only you can get it for me."
"What is it?"
He does not answer. The silence from him is ominous.
"Get closer to him and I will tell you when the time is right."
"What if I don't want to?" I glare at him now.
If he could be stubborn and vague about what he wants, then I would show him how much of a pushover I'm not.
His smile fades slowly.
"If you don't return your end of the bargain, you lose this new life you've made for yourself. The Alpha finds out you've faked your scent which is a crime punishable by death and your entire family will be executed."
His answer is cold and threatening that I dare not speak back at this point. Fine, getting close to Silas, was it? That wouldn't be too hard. If it is what he wants, I can do that much.
"So all you need for me is to get close to him, right?"
His smile slowly returns.
"Yes. Get close to him, close enough that he trusts every word you say."
"That's all I need to do, right? To fulfill my own end of the bargain?"
"For now."
I don't like the way he leaves it open like that but I have no choice. It seems doable. It's a challenge I can accept.
"Fine."
"Perfect."
The bell rings suddenly. I look towards the door. In a few minutes, my next class starts so I needed to round things up before then. I turn to the mirror again and he's gone, just like that.
I want to tell myself that I had imagined it but it was all too real to be an imagination.
Putting my hair in place and adjusting my shirt so I don't look like some crazy person, I step out of the lavatory, taking a few steps away before I hear my name again.
I jump in fright, thinking it's the creepy wizard guy again but I turn to see Silas. It's the first time I'm relieved it's him.
"Hey, you okay?" He queries, seeing my rushed breathing and perspiration sliding from my forehead. I nod my head vigorously.
"Yeah, yeah. Totally fine." My breathing slowly calms.
"Okay. You still up for our hangout tomorrow?"
Now I want to scoff at him, roll my eyes, and barf. It's disgusting how a few moments ago he let his girlfriend walk all over me and still dares to ask about the date. I want to call him out on his bullshit and walk away but I don't. My deal with the wizard echoes in my head.
I form a smile, painful to just me.
"Yeah, totally."
"Great, I'll pick you up by 4 pm." He says.
"It's a date."
