                    FREYA'S POV
"So, you're telling me you went on a date with Silas Bloodmoon and all you did was get ice cream?" Xena questions in disbelief.
We are currently making our way out of the female dorm and to the building where our classes are being held. She casually hangs her bag over her shoulder by my side.
"Yes, basically. It was nice actually." Especially the part where we had a real conversation.
"And he didn't make a move on you?"
I smile nervously.
The truth is, after heading back to school and getting in trouble for returning late, Xena had incessantly queried me on the details which I had given... with the exemption of the party, of course.
She was already sensitive and touchy about the idea of hanging out with Silas and I didn't want to possibly give her a heart attack relaying the details of it. The truth is, despite her views, I need to get close to him and I don't need her getting in the way.
"Yes, he didn't."
"Bullshit, there's no way he'd be alone with your fine ass and not try something. Not the playboy alpha I know."
I blush at the compliment hidden in her words. I want to convince her a bit more or at least change the topic to anything else. It's evident I can't change how she views Silas.
"You know, your beef with Silas Bloodmoon sounds a bit too personal sometimes. Did he ever get someone close to you or perhaps
I forget to watch my steps as I walk forward, so I don't see the person in front of me. I crash into what feels like a tall brick wall but I know it's a tower of hardened flesh and muscle. The impact pushes me backward as I begin falling
A large hand holds me before I make an impact on the hard ground.
"Thank you." I balance myself on my feet before looking up to my savior.
I immediately become aware of how familiar his face is and I quickly remember him as one of Silas' friend, the second one. He sat next to Adam the very first day I had been dragged to the cafeteria against my will.
"Hi, Angel. Will you take me to heaven?" He passes an obnoxious smile and it's an immediate cringe for me.
I gently push away from his embrace, putting enough distance from him.
"Please, don't tell me you've picked up girls with that line."
He shrugs.
"It's worked on a few, but my good looks do most of the heavy lifting." He winks at me again.
I admit he is good-looking with his dirty blonde wavy hair and emerald eyes that glimmer like actual emeralds. A kind of exotic beauty. It's no wonder girls fall for him despite his cheesy lines but I can't help but feel like I've seen better.
Silas' face pops into my mind against my control.
"It's been a while, beautiful Freya" He takes my hand slowly, raising it to his lips and planting a soft kiss on the back of my palm.
He looks up at me slowly like his waiting for me to gush over him.
I awkwardly pull my hand away from him.
"I assume this works for you as well."
"Every single time. You, my dear, prove to be of a different breed of woman."
I find myself chuckling. He might be bad with the lines but he definitely has the charisma to back it up.
Before I can even say more, Xena puts some distance between us, using herself as some sort of shield from him.
"Step away from him, Freya, he's a pervert." She steps in between us.
Her words are kind of shocking and he suddenly frowns now, looking at her. All that practiced charm washes away with a demeaning look like an evil grin.
Suddenly, there's some kind of tension sparking between these two. I look from Xena's glare to his mischievous smirk and I know for sure these two know each other.
"Xena, it's been a while." He sort of greets her.
"Not long enough."
I can almost see lasers shooting out their eyes in this stare down.
"Do you two know each other?"
"No!" They both yell quickly in unison.
Yep, they definitely know each other.
"I like to imagine I never met this loser," Xena adds
"You're not much yourself, airhead."
Xena scoffs at his insults. "My chemistry test results beg to differ."
"You probably cheated off someone else's, it won't be a first for you."
"Guess I learned from the best." She bites back.
"Guys! Can you cut out for just an end to their squabble.
minute?" I join in, trying to put
"Freya, this is Silas' Zeta, Lucas, and an A-class pervert." Xena desperately warns me about him with enough venom in her tone.
"Anyone getting any kind of action is a pervert to your prude ass."
"Enough!" I yell out, finally fed up with the bickering.
They stop again, both looking at me now but pouting like two very unhappy children.
"Geez, what is with you two?"
They remain silent still and pass the other a death glare, which is childish of them.
Sudden loud mumbling sounds pull our attention away from the moment briefly. Ahead of us, a small crowd of students forms just outside the front door of the school building.
It seemed large, probably consisting of almost all the student body.
Briefly, I forget the conflict I'm meant to control and develop curiosity.
"What's going on there?" I ask
"It looks like they're already getting ready to start the ritual," Lucas explains casually with limited information.
I look at him with a raised brow. "What ritual?"
He raises a brow, looking at me like I'm supposed to know what was going on. Then he turns to Xena with a bored expression.
"It seems your 'friend' hasn't filled you on the details. A bit slow as always, aren't you, Xena?"
Xena growls, baring her fangs and wanting to attack him now. But I calm her down by placing a hand on her shoulders and then turning to glare at Lucas.
"Lucas be serious."
"Fine, fine. The Solstice Festival is next week. It's like this event where all students participate in various sporting events and compete to win. The winners receive honor and acknowledgment from the Alpha king."
"What does that have to do with the crowd?"
"Before the festival week, we have a ritual. Two wolves are selected to light the torches that represent the sun, that is our light, and the moon, that watches over us. It's a way to kick-start the event. The duo is referred to as the judges for the whole week and bestows upon the winner's honor alongside the Alpha king. Essentially, they have authority akin to the school's headmaster for the whole week." Xena jumps in to explain, glaring at Lucas in the process.
It's clear she wants to be the one giving me the full details.
"So, the crowd is probably gathering because the ritual is about to begin." She adds as well.
"How does the election process occur?" The whole thing gets me more interested in this event.
"Well, since the Alpha prince is available, it's his role to pick a partner to light the torches with. But it's always been Elena. That's who we all expect." Lucas jumps in now to explain.
It seems like they're fighting over who gets to talk now. I find it cute but say nothing.
The entire prospect is fascinating. The richness of culture and traditions excite me and I can't wait to partake in it even as a spectator. A small part of me wonders what it would entail being one of the judges for the week.
We move closer to the chattering crowd just in time for the ner choosing to commence.
Silas emerges into the center of the crowd as regal as ever with a spring in his step. He's as gorgeous as ever with his midnight black hair tousled perfectly in place and cold silver-gray eyes assessing the crowd. I realize I haven't seen him last since the date under the midnight sky. I feel nostalgic seeing him now and something tugs at my heart tightly and there's like a ball stuck in my throat.
He holds some sort of red string in his hands with one end tied to his right wrist while looking around the crowd like he's searching for something or someone.
"The Alpha prince is meant to select his partner by tying the other end of the red string around their wrist. Right now, he's probably searching the crowd for Elena." Lucas fills me in.
Xena huffs from my side, annoyed that he's still talking to me but he seems to ignore her completely.
Silas watches the crowd and then begins moving closer. From my position, my eyes search for Elena as well.
I still find her heavily annoying but I'm intrigued to watch the whole selection process upfront.
I spot her on the other side up ahead, standing right infront but... he passes her?
More students get riled up by his change in direction as he moves through the crowd, leaving Elena behind. There's no way he hadn't seen her standing there and stretching out her hands but he had simply walked passed her.
He moves through the crowd and in every section he walks in parts for him. His strides became certain like he has a clear destination now and he's slowly drawing closer and closer to our spot. "What the hell are you doing, Silas?" Lucas queries silently right by my side.
It's clear we're thinking the same thing because I have no idea what he's up to anymore. Typical of Silas to cause a pandemonium even in a small event like this.
He's almost at our spot and the crowd parts till he's standing right infront of us. I do as others have done, making some space for him to move but he just stands there, smirking at me with a look in his eyes I'm currently not finding the least bit funny. Dear goddess, please let it not be what I think it is.
He moves closer to me, picking up my right hand as the whole crowd watches and ties the other end of the red rope around my wrist.
I'm too aghast to even object to him at this point. Once it's secured, he holds my arm in his and chants what I assume is part of the selection ritual.
"Goddess, bless this partner of mine as we light the torches of the solstice." Well, this is just great.
