FREYA'S POV:
"Sit down, Freya Willows, I want to have a word with you."
My body moves automatically against my will. I sit down robotically on my seat.
For a very brief moment, I see the gem necklace around his neck subtly glimmering an ominous red hue before going dull again and the control of my body returns instantly.
I pant for air, suddenly able to breathe again. I take as much as possible into my once sealed lungs.
"Perfect." He's still smiling but I know for sure it doesn't mean anything well.
My mind is already in full panic. He knows my secret I bet, there's no other explanation.
Somehow, the wizard's spell isn't powerful enough to trick even the Alpha King - I should have known that.
I should have stayed within my limits, far away from ever encountering him.
My eyes sting, growing wet with tears but I blink them away, wanting to show no weakness even in this situation.
He watches my every reaction in full amusement.
"I wonder what's going on in that little head of yours right now." He smirks. "Makes me want to pry it open and see for myself. Sadly, Luwena hates the smell of blood on me."
Fuck.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
Was that a freaking death threat?
I try to jump from my seat and make a run for it but I'm unable to, like my feet has been nailed to the ground.
"You see, I heard about you before Elena called actually. Of course, I have my eyes and ears everywhere. I know everything that goes on in this school, down to the color of your toothbrush... black. But that's by the way, not the reason for this conversation."
He leans back into his seat now.
"I've done my background check on you, searched files containing names of every registered Alpha family with the name Willows and only one on the shores of a distant island shows up. They don't have a single girl in their family."
I gulp again, just drinking up all that fear drool in my mouth.
"Do you know what that means?" He asks.
I shake my head desperately.
"It means, it's either your family leaves in some rural hidden world where my people can't reach or there's a secret you're hiding, Freya." He lazily pokes at a pea on his plate with his fork, placing it in his mouth and chewing.
"It was an interesting find actually, makes me want to pry further and dig up who you really are. You see, I hate not having the information that I want, but I assume there's not much harm a mere high school girl is capable of."
He swallows the chewed-up pea in his mouth
"But then again, that's besides the point." He looks at me now, wearing his charming smile again and leaning closer to my terrified self.
"My son is very talented, thrives in everything he sets his mind to. He has the potential of surpassing my legacy just as I had done with my father, but he has one fatal flaw, you see. He can't seem to keep his focus at times. I let it slide over and over again, seeing as it wasn't a problem... That is until you came from nowhere."
"I don't understand what you mean, s-sir. What does this have to do with me?"
"Everything actually. It's quite simple, hmm? You are meddling in things far beyond your comprehension. The union between the Bloodmoon royalty and the Crescents dynasty is very crucial. That's as much information you need to know."
I shiver at the astonishing weight of his gaze, yet I'm also immensely relieved he hasn't figured the truth out.
It's frightening just how much he's looked into everything while I foolishly thought I was safe, but he can't do anything to me without enough evidence that I'm a threat.
This only means I have to be more careful not to get on his bad side.
"I understand, Your majesty. Their relationship is... important."
"No, actually, you don't understand. Freya Willows, I will put it in a very simple way a young lady like yourself can understand the way I want you to. Stay away from my son."
His words come as a shock to me. I wasn't expecting it. Wasn't expecting all this to be about that.
"What?"
"Stop crossing paths with him and if you are unfortunate enough to cross paths, use some other route. Essentially, avoid him."
"With all due respect, Your majesty, Silas is my... classmate and I assure you, I pose no threats to his engagements."
Atleast not anymore.
"Even if I believe you, my dear, that's not stopping my son from doing something stupid."
"Why do you think I'm so important enough to affect Silas in any way? We're just... just..."
What were we?
Friends?
Acquaintances?
Strangers?
None of those relationships involved kissing the other till they couldn't breathe.
Friends shouldn't know how you taste.
Still, this whole encounter seemed too extreme just for someone like me.
I feel overestimated.
"You're asking too many questions. It seems you don't understand the dynamics going on right now. Again, I'll simplify this further for you."
He leans in deadly close. The hairs at the back of my head stand in attention, sensing danger as he gets closer.
Fear freezes me in place on instinct, like a prey faking death from its predator. More sweat drips down my forehead.
"Stay away from my son and if he chases after you, run the other way. I have eyes watching and keeping track of you. It only takes one single slip up from you, my dear. Just one slip and everything you know and love will come undone. Do you understand me now?"
I nod instantly.
"Good, good. And there wasn't even a need for a drop of blood to be shed. This wasn't as fun as I had hoped."
I tremble in my sit as he finally shifts away from me, giving me space to breathe.
I feel a trail of heat from tears I'm not aware are spilling from my eyes. My heart bangs furiously in my chest.
"Dear dear child. You're okay; still in one piece." He coos at me mockingly, chuckling at the end. I'm beyond terrified. Traumatized is the right word.
Terror rips through my body, I'm only able to tremble and weep like a little child.
Even my tears don't flow the way I need them to, they are as crippled as I am.
"Good talk." He pats my back and I flinch away from him. From his eyes, I see it's all just a sick game to him and
I was merely an unwanted chess piece standing in his way.
The game had to play out how he wanted it to.
He had to win, ofcourse.
The dangerous Alphas' obsession with winning was equally a strength that pushed them like madness to attain a goal no matter who or what needed to be gotten rid of.
"Sweetheart, I'm back."
Queen Lumera comes back just when the Alpha King turns back to his plate.
She drops a loving kiss on his cheeks which he leans to receive, before settling right beside him.
"What did I miss?"
"It seems Silas and Elena have made up again."
They both turn to the couple dancing at the center of the hall as the happy music played. "Oh, that's wonderful."
"And Freya Willows was just on her way out."
She looks at me for the first time since this whole sham of dinner had begun, showing what I tell myself is a fake concern.
"Really? You haven't even touched your food."
"She's suddenly feeling nauseous." He fills in for me. "Oh, dear."
I take the hint he's subtly giving me. He's telling me to leave without causing a scene now that Silas and Elena hadn't returned from their dance.
He seems to desperately want to hide this vicious part of himself from Queen Lumera.
As commanded, I slowly rise from the table with my head hung low, hiding the fear in my eyes. "Please, excuse me."
"You are excused, dear. You should take some drugs as well."
I nod simply, unable to make another sentence without my voice breaking.
I walk down from the stage, using everything within me to stop the tear at the rim of my eyes and not to run out of the hall.
Luckily everyone else is too engrossed in the feast to look my way.
Once I leave the hall safe from prying eyes, I run.
As fast as my legs can take me.
The suppressed tears well up in my eyes and spill out uncontrollably.
I toss my heels off my feet and rip out of my gown.
My bones bend and twist, mangling themselves up as
I morph into my wolf.
I let her take full control, leading us far into the deep woods as I sink even deeper into nothingness.
