: NEW ENEMY
I stand there, looking dazed at this dude, in utter disbelief from what I had just heard.
I knew it! He doesn't like me.
I frown now, dropping my courtesy.
"What?"
"Oh my, I apologize if that came out rudely."
"He's your friend, right? Shouldn't you know where he is? Better still, why don't you go ask his girlfriend where he is?"
"Elena holds little importance to him at the moment, sadly. You've already done well in kicking her down from that position."
"I didn't wish for that to happen." I scowl.
"Well, it already has whether you wished for it or not, and the political relationship is almost at its end."
Wow, Xena wasn't joking about his lowkey obsession with duties and what not.
"Then, advise your friend to focus on his relationship. I don't understand why you're blaming me for what's going on between Elena and Silas."
He chuckles lowly, tilting down to my height.
"Do you think he likes you?" The switch from a smile to a frown is instant.
I'm taken aback by his question. It's clear, for some reason, he sees me as a threat of some sort.
I should have been some sort of passing phase, yet I've stayed and it clearly irks him enough to openly confront me.
"I don't care." I answer firmly.
"Then, tell him that."
"I have! Countless times. But that's none of your business, is it?"
He watches me seriously with thoughts in his mind I can't possibly read. His expression, blank as a canvas.
I'm already exhausted from my more than eventful day and I simply want this to be over.
Abruptly, he leans even lower and closer just so his lips are just a few centimeters away from my ear.
The sudden closeness startles me and I attempt to walk away but then, he speaks in a hushed whisper, clear enough to be understood.
"Shouldn't you be staying away from Silas?"
His words shock me and hold me in place like a lifeless object, frozen like ice.
Thoughts flood into my head at those simple words, reminding me of my pact with someone else days ago, weeks ago...
There was no fucking way he should know that...
Just when I want to push back on my own, a force does it for me only harder.
He balances himself elegantly without staggering a bit with the forced distance between us now.
"Don't stand too close to her." Silas' commanding voice calls from behind me.
All of a sudden, I realize his towering presence behind me, having been fully mentally occupied seconds ago.
I look up to him and meet his eyes that burn fiercely and watch me back as well.
A sense of calmness quickly engulfs me like a comforting blanket.
"Ah, just the guy I'm looking for." Lucas says.
His smile is back now.
"Why not search for me properly, instead of bothering Freya?"
"I didn't mean to bother, it's just you've been skipping classes a lot these day. You're almost impossible to find."
They speak casually, yet I can feel the invisible tension sparking between the two, despite Lucas' smile and Silas' uninterested gaze.
They're probably only acting civil because I'm in their midst.
"Well, I'm here now."
"Yeah, you've finally chosen to reveal yourself." He adds sarcastically. "It's something I'd prefer to discuss in private." Lucas turns to me.
I make the move to excuse myself by slowly walking around the both of them, but Silas stops me, grabbing a hold of my arm.
I look up to glare at him, but he ignores me.
"If it doesn't involve pack invasion or political issues my father wants me to deal with, you can say it right here."
Lucas' expression turns sour again, looking at me then back to Silas.
"If you say so.
I try to pry my arm away from his hold, but he's reluctant in letting me go.
Luckily, it's just Silas and I and Lucas here ofcourse, no other person that would misunderstand the situation or escalate it into something it's not.
No rumors; no attention from King Darius, right?
"I discovered something during the run this morning."
"This discovery of yours, is it so important that you had to bother Freya?"
I glare harder at Silas now, but he continues to ignore me, focused fully on Lucas.
Leave me out of this, asshole. He already dislikes me enough.
Lucas' expression remains unaltered, serious and firm but I bet it irks him even more; he's just hiding it.
"It was a smaller brown wolf, Silas. By the river bank."
I'm immediately pulled in by this conversation now.
My heart sinks within my chest while my pulse quickly goes on overdrive.
"What?" Silas looks more serious now.
"It was by the river bank and I pursued the intruder for awhile, but it jumped off a cliff and escaped." It takes everything in me to hide my shivering right beside Silas. My palms grow sweaty, despite being freezing cold.
Holy fucking shit.
So, he had been the golden brown wolf chasing me earlier. Of all people, why did it have to be Lucas spotting me?
"It wasn't a rogue definitely. That wolf belongs in our pack but way down the food chain - probably an Omega snooping around private school property." Lucas deduces. "It's obviously suspicious movement, a spy maybe."
"You suspect this Omega was a spy?"
"There's no other explanation to why it was on the run. Typical omegas know to bow when faced with superiority or identify themselves. It hid from me, then ran away on confrontation."
Just like that, he's already assuming I'm some nefarious wolf plotting something.
Then again, he didn't know it was me, and I did act very suspicious running away like my life depended on it
Which it did.
"Did you find this wolf?" Silas questions.
"Well, I was on it's trail when you stopped me from proceeding further earlier." He grumbles the last bit, avoiding Silas' eyes.
I blush immediately, remembering what he's talking about.
The fact that Silas hadn't let him go further because I was stark naked and hiding right behind him. The scene that followed once he left also infiltrates my mind. Suddenly, the room temperature shoots up.
Silas clears his throat, changing the subject.
"Elena said the same thing as well."
"She did?"
Great, even the wicked witch of the west spotted me during my run.
I had thought I was being extra careful, straying a good distance away from them but not careful enough.
I seemed to have failed to account for their sharp eagle eye sight, especially during the day.
You should have waited, Freya. Fucking waited for some perfect time at night!
"She saw the same small brown wolf. I assumed she was seeing things."
"What? She told you she saw an intruder and you just passed it off as poor eye sight? Damn it, Silas, what is with you?" Lucas' frown deepens, getting even more ticked.
They both pass the other annoyed looks, arguing silently with their eyes. I can't help but feel terrible, knowing this is all because of me.
The truth remains that I am really not one of them and might just never be accepted.
This only hurts my wolf even more. Her whines wounded me.
"Your mate tells you something important and you pass it as visual impairment."
"She's not my mate." Silas growls threateningly. "Well, she will be once you've been mated officially in a few months."
"What?" I asked, shocked from the new information being exposed to me.
I look between the two puzzled. Lucas stares back at me, not affected by my expression even in the slightest.
His expression only screams 'that's right, stop deluding yourself.'
Silas hides his face from me.
"Freya, can you give the both of us some space while we talk privately?" He asks now, still glaring at Lucas.
"Bullshit! You weren't so concerned with the space seconds ago, were you?" I yell now, pissed.
I don't know why I'm pissed, I just feel intensely overwhelmed.
This vital information that he's, for some reason, refused to share with me all this while.
I mean, hours ago, I let him stare at my naked body.
"Is this true?"
"Why are you acting so surprised, you already knew they were betrothed? Are you shocked that they're going to be mated officially in a few months to seal the bond?" Lucas says, matter of factly. "Shut up." Silas warns him now, and he shuts his mouth easily.
He looks at me with a more worried glance, making steps towards me but I put more distance between us.
"No." I say, walking back. "Don't you dare." My words come out too harsh, but I don't care. He deserves it and more.
How could he not tell me something so vital, after everything he's put me through? All that crap about not letting me go...
I turn around without another word, and jog off the other way.
