It's the longest few seconds of my life.
His lips move painfully slow towards mine. In that second, I panic with varying emotions whirling within me, yet still unable to move or do anything.
A torch light suddenly flashes in our direction and I regain control of my motor skills. I fly backwards, putting enough distance between us but lose my balance in the protest. Luckily, he's still holding my arm so his grip prevents me from hitting the hard ground.
"What are you two doing here?"
The voice sounds like one of our teachers. I'm unable to see the face because the torch flashes in my eye. I say nothing, trying to shield my eyes. However, Silas remains quiet next to me, his jaw ticking in slight irritation - unfazed by the bright lights in his eyes.
"Get back to the gathering right now! No loitering about school."
"Yes, sir. We'll do just that." Silas answers, being surprisingly respectful and the teacher leaves us sooner than expected.
Perks of being the next Alpha king, I presume. If I were with anyone else, I would have been receiving some sort of punishment.
He turns back to me once the bright light is gone, once my eyes have adjusted to the darkness around us once more.
"Let's head back."
The look in his eyes is so intense, I don't know when I give in and nod my head, agreeing to go back to the ceremony with him. Maybe he isn't the only crazy one.
Maybe I'm crazy too.
That narrative made more sense to why I am meekly walking right beside him, too perplexed to protest.
We reach the garden again and it's close to being empty. The previously lively environment is left noiseless without a single soul in place.
I want to ask where everyone had gone to but he reads my mind and answers.
"It's already past midnight, the race must have begun while we were away."
"Oh."
Shit, just shit.
I let his pretty face brainwash me into coming back and at the wrong time. Now that I'm here, there's probably no excuse not to join the others in my wolf form.
I take a step back away from him, wanting to walk out right at this moment before someone else spots me. But his hand suddenly takes a hold of my wrist.
"Are you trying to leave?" His eyes weaken me, making it harder to pull away from his hold.
"I suddenly feel a bit tired."
"You seem fine to me."
"I feel dizzy. Maybe I should sit this one out and go down to my room for some rest."
His cold eyes reduce into slits as he watches me like he's trying to uncover some lie. My palms grow sweaty and I try to relax and hide my nervousness.
I keep thinking that if he looks a bit deeper, he might uncover the truth and for that reason, I suddenly want to hide away from his penetrative gaze.
"You're leaving cause you're still annoyed, right?"
"What?"
His final deduction is just comical. He's undoubtedly too self- absorbed to see what's in front of him.
"Wasn't my apology enough for you?"
I sigh, getting more frustrated. "This isn't about you. There are things in life that doesn't just revolve around you."
"Prove it then."
Really? When I'm trying to make a run for it?
I try to tug my hand away but it doesn't budge. His grip isn't tight but it's unbreakable. There's no way I can escape, so I give in.
"Fine, how do you want me to prove this isn't about you?"
"Run with me." O
"Are you kidding me?" I deadpan.
It's complete opposite of what I want to do. If he were someone else, I might entertain the idea. They would suspect something is wrong with me when I change into a much smaller wolf but can't deny that I'm an alpha, but Silas... he will figure it out right away.
"No."
"This isn't a negotiation. You either prove me wrong or admit you actually are avoiding this and tell me why."
There really isn't any winning with his guy. He just takes what he wants.
"Fine, but I really am not feeling so good so... I can't change into my wolf tonight."
I anticipate his next words anxiously.
"Okay, fine with me."
I look up to him, wide eyed as he has shocked me again. I didn't think he'd take it.
"Wait, really?"
"Yeah, you can just run as you are. I don't mind."
He lets my arm go and begins stretching, getting ready to let his wolf free. He flexes his muscles that glide and contract in corners so beautifully.
I stare with a side glance, gripped by how ripped he was and all that layer of thick muscle glistening. My eyes glance from his abs to his six layered packs, down to the tempting v-line on his lower waist...
Damn.
"Take a picture, it lasts longer." He smirks, giving me a nice view of his abs.
I look away abruptly, hiding my flustered cheeks.
"I've seen better."
"Where? Your dreams?" He chuckles darkly.
I grunt, annoyed but keep my eyes away, not wanting to fan his ego anymore.
"Ha ha, aren't you a comedian?"
"There's no need to deny it. It's okay to be attracted to me."
Wow, cocky much?
I'm fed up with him at this point and just start running ahead in the direction I think is the race track. I would much rather prefer it than listening to anymore thing he has to say.
SILAS POV
I'm impressed by her grit and will to stand against me. It's like a fresh breath of air and new to me.
Her comments, despite her obvious attraction, makes me chuckle.
Teasing her is surprisingly more fun than I anticipate and I can't get enough of it now.
She huffs, frustrated and looking peeved. For some reason, it has me wondering what other expressions I can get out of her. If she smiles, what it would look like? If her lips would pout if she gets really angry? She dashes off, wanting to get away and in the wrong direction.
There really isn't a dull moment with this one. I watch her back for a few seconds, then turn into my wolf.
My bones shift and bend as my wolf breaks free, howling under the moonlight. He doesn't pause before he runs after her like it's a chase.
His pace much slower than normal as he tails closely behind her, deliberately keeping a little distance between us, probably to make her think she's faster, or just following where ever she's heading to without losing sight of her.
We steer well-off the track after a few minutes. He's amused by how confident she dashes through the trees on her tiny legs that takes her farther and farther away from the main path.
'She's so small.'
He howls in my mind
'Yeah, pretty small and adorable too.' I agree.
We continue following her into undiscovered woods quickly picking up a strange scent in the air.
It's faint but my senses tingle and my instincts scream danger.
My wolf knows it too. He runs faster, almost at full speed, catching up to her in mere seconds.
He jumps right in her way, forcing her to come to a halt.
"Hey! You almost made me trip." She yells out but it's not the concern right now. There's someone in the woods with us, someone I haven't smelled before.
Something dangerous was following us. He grumbles tossing his head side to side, trying to say something to her. But clearly she doesn't understand.
"Is something wrong, Silas?"
He tries to answer but there's rustling in the bushes a few feet away.
The scent is growing stronger and it's more than one I can sense-two, maybe three.
"Silas?"
They're just behind the shrubs, around us now. My wolf pin points their exact locations. We change our stance into one ready for battle and just before the first intruder attacks, we strike.
