Our talons rip through the flesh of his upper arm, enlisting a yelp of pain from his lips but I don't stop there. It's followed by a blow from our claws, sending him flying a good distance away.
Their scent is more pungent than ever and I'm more than sure what we were against.
Damn rogues.
A shriek suddenly echoes in the air right beside me. I immediately know something bad has happened to Freya.
We turn swiftly, growling menacingly at the second intruder standing over her motionless body.
My wolf loses sanity, instantly taking almost full control of our body and lunging forward at him
He changes, ripping through his clothes into a dark brown wolf smaller than mine. We brawl for moments; deadly strikes follow after the other. I lean in for his jugular vein but the first pounces unto us from the back, now its two against one.
My wolf is fed up with this. He releases a deathly howl into the air that moves the winds and shakes the earth beneath us. The howl of an Alpha King reverberates through our body in all its might and terror.
They suddenly freeze from the dominating pressure now oozing out of us. Fear grips them from the way their knees suddenly wobble.
They realize they've messed with the wrong person.
In only seconds, they run away. My wolf tries to chase them but then, we remember Freya.
Her unconscious body still lies just behind us. We rush to her and my wolf relinquishes control back to me as our body morphs into a more human shape.
I lean over her, checking frantically for injuries.
There's no blood or scratches, no bruises either. She's breathing perfectly fine, almost as though she's sleeping. Relief washes through me, realizing she just fainted from shock.
Maybe she really wasn't feeling as good and it wasn't just an excuse to skip the run I take a piece of their shredded clothes, wrapping it around my waist and pick her up into my arms, bridal style and begin walking back to school.
I pass the last shield of vegetation, walking into the large clearing we had been in earlier, the lights hanging around suddenly feel so bright in my eyes.
The crowd of students are back, gathered and whispering among themselves. Their full attention shifts to Freya and I as we walk in The drumming has since stopped and it seems like everyone's on edge.
The first people that run towards me as I approach are Adam and Lucas. It's clear everyone had heard the howling earlier and are now agitated.
"Silas, what happened out there?" Adam asks first. He knows what the howl means and as my future second in command, he's already trying to assess the situation. He looks from me to Freya's unconscious body.
He offers to take Freya from my hands.
I involuntarily growl at him, dodging away from his arms.
"I'm trying to help." He assures me.
I feel reluctant to hand her over to him, like he's not going to be as gentle. I shake the thoughts from my head, finally handing her away. But discomfort fills me suddenly.
"Make sure she's fine. Don't you dare drop her."
"She's light as a feather, don't worry."
My skin twitches just seeing her in his arms, so I turn the other way
"Oh my goodness, is that Freya?"
The girl she was talking with earlier runs up to us, looking at her. Worry and fear are evident her eyes that seem to grow wet with moisture. She turns to me quickly, glaring hatefully in mere seconds - already seeking who to blame and I'm her prime suspect.
"What did you do to her?"
I roll my eyes. Her first thought is that I've somehow hurt her friend, which is laughable. I give no answer because she doesn't deserve one, but my silence infuriates her only more.
"Answer me, you asshole!"
She makes a move to attack but Lucas grabs onto her, holding her back. She flays her fists around in protest. She bites and scratches against his grip that doesn't let go, not knowing that he had just saved her.
If that crazy she-wolf had dared to lay a finger on me....
"Take her to the nurse as well. I'm sure Freya would feel more comfortable seeing her friend's face first when she wakes up."
The words that leave my mouth are mine yet sound so foreign. Since when have I cared for someone else's comfort?
Lucas nods, taking Xena away with him. She continues to yell and scream as she's dragged off.
I turn, looking up at the gathered crowd watching. My snarl is enough to disperse them instantly. Fear driven, they start heading back into their dorm rooms in rows. All except Elena remain.
She watches me, seething with anger and hurt in her eyes. In her hand is a red piece of cloth and I immediately assume is the amity flag.
The one she'd promised to get for me.
Damn, I had forgotten about that.
"How dare you?" She begins as soon as I reach her.
"What? No welcome kiss?" I quip dryly but in no actual mood for a kiss.
"How dare you walk back into school carrying her in your arms with only a piece of ripped fabric tied round your waist?"
"I didn't have the benefit of looking for where I hid my pants." I shrug.
After the run, everyone just finds where ever they keep their clothes and put them on after changing, but there was no other way of bringing her back with me without changing right there.
"You're making your excuses again."
"We were attacked, Elena. It's not an excuse."
"You could have just left her there. It not like she'd die in the few minutes it would take to come back and send someone else to her."
My wolf growls quickly at the words that she says, taking partial control while in my human form, attempting to force his way through.
"Watch that pretty tongue of yours if you want to keep it." The words come out as an animalistic growl but she gets the message.
She's frightened for a moment, taking a step away from me but her fear is replaced by anger once more. She scoffs, turning away from me and walks off towards her dorm room.
She's gone now and I'm left in silence with my own thoughts.
Thoughts that centred around a particular she-wolf with doe brown eyes and wits sharper than my claws.
FREYA'S POV
I sit up quickly, screaming as loud as my voice box lets me. The last thing I remember is a dark shadow figure hurdling to attack me in the dead night. Strangely now, it's not night. Bright sunlight leaks in through a large window by my right. It's warm and I'm on a soft bed with a warm covering over the lower half of my body.
"Freya!"
And now Xena leaps from my other side, gripping me in a tight hug.
How did she get here? How did I get here? Where's the dark figure? Where's... where's Silas?
"I was so worried, you were out for pretty long so I started thinking you had hit your head and were in some kind of coma." She begins ranting loudly next to me and I realize how hard my head is pulsing.
"What's going on? Where are we?"
"We're in the school clinic."
"How did I get here?" "Darling, you passed out. According to what I was told, you and Silas got attacked by some rogues after you drifted out of pack borders by accident. He took them out and carried you all the way back to school and made sure you were taken to the nurse..."
My heart skips a soft beat.
So that's what happened while I was out. The Jerkwad protected me
"...at least that's what he claims happened. I don't know if I should believe that whole story of being attacked by rogues."
"No... we really were attacked. Infact, I remember running and he suddenly stopped me from going further like he knew something was wrong. I remember the moment before the attack.... It all ends there." My mind plays it all back in flashes, up to the moment where the dark figure approaches me. My heart pounds faster recalling how much danger we had been in. I could have been killed by rogues but Silas saved me.
"Wow, I guess he really told the truth. Maybe he does have a softer core under all that cold heartless exterior." Xena adds also deep in thoughts.
I imagine she feels a bit guilty for doubting him after he literally fought rogues and protected me.
It's not like I had expected him to leave me in the dust and flee, but it still doesn't change the fact that I now owe him. He had kept me safe and carried me back to school and even taken me to the school nurse.
"Yeah, maybe he does."
