SILAS' POV:
"This is the last report we had on Elena's movement. There's been nothing suspicious so far, Silas." Adam says, handing over a folder to me.
I take it with urgency and disbelief, going through the pages of it's content eagerly.
It's as clean as all 20 folders we've acquired concerning Elena at this point.
There's no other suspect capable of simply abducting Freya specifically, especially due to vendetta, other that Elena and yet, every single time we run through the number, she always comes back clean.
No matter how much I hate to admit it, it's very obvious now, painfully obvious that she had nothing to do with Freya's disappearance.
Dread fills me instantly.
This only means that we are back to square one.
The rogues suspicion was a bust; no sign of rogue attacks, and the track prints we found days ago had been clearly fabricated, almost like someone was actively trying to put us on the wrong track and hinder our investigation.
Meaning it has to be an inside job.
Then, the Elena hunch fails almost instantly due to all her alibi's matching perfectly. Her and her little minion were as clean as a newborn's heart.
Fuck.
I sigh, running my hands through my hair roughly, drowning in the thick waters of despair and hopelessness. My mind far crumbled, and I have no idea what to do.
The fear of failing Freya weighs on me. I'm not sure if she's still okay at this point.
"We'll find her, Silas." Adam assures me in a pained tone.
I feel his devotion, and even knowing it's not entirely for me or the betterment of our pack, the most important thing is how hard he's willing to push for the purpose of finding her, right?
Wrong.
It still irks me having him stand there and worry about my female like that. I'm close to putting him off the search team, but he's a vital addition, and I need all hands on deck for Freya.
Before I can say or do shit, my wolf suddenly howls loudly in pain inside me, and it quickly feels like a silver dagger thrusts through my chest.
I groan in pain.
"Silas?" Adam turns to me again, confused.
Heat, pure molten lava heat begins to flow through my veins, and a million needles prick into my skin.
My wolf begins reacting abnormally, trying to shred it's way through my skin forcefully.
I pull on the reigns of control, trying to calm him but he's relentless, tugging and clashing against my authority.
Calm down! I yell to him through our mental link, but he growls at me like I'm the enemy, pushing back.
"Aargh!" I yell out now, scratching at my own skin that burns me.
"Silas!" Adam rushes to my side, trying to pull my hands away from me.
Trying to stop me from ripping my own skin before my wolf has the chance to.
My claws appear against my will, and I instantly know my wolf, for some reason, is trying to get me to change into it's form.
"Leave." I say with a strained voice.
He ignores the statement, taking a hold of my arm.
"Leave!" I growl more fiercely, tossing him to the wall with the force of my arm.
My fangs stretch out of my mouth. My bones bend and break painfully, and I crash onto the hard floor.
Adam rises to his feet, watching me. He seems reluctant, staring at me with worry.
"I'll get Lucas." He says finally before dashing out the door.
Once he's gone, I focus fully on defying my feral wolf.
"Heel." I command to him again coldly.
A sharp ringing sudden shoots into my head as though piercing my brain, silencing all thoughts in my mind.
I feel as though I'm suddenly falling further into the ground, sinking into a pit of darkness as another consciousness takes over.
The next time I come into consciousness, the pain in my joints is the first thing I feel and notices.
The memory of every bone in my body bending and breaking themselves constantly fills my mind again before I open my eyes.
My initial vision is blurry, but a silhouette looms all over me, with a soft muffled voice. She's saying something I can't make out, yet an her hand falls on mine.
Freya...
She's really here, back from wherever she had gone to.
I smile slightly, trying to reach out to her, to make sure this isn't just another dream.
Her hands touch mine, and instead of the gently addicting warmth of her skin on mine, dread crawls up my spine.
My vision clears as reality crashes in. The mirage fades into Elena, watching me with a frown on her face.
My smile drops instantly.
"Silas... are you okay?" She says softly with her forehead furrowed, her hands massaging mine.
I drag my hand away from her hold slightly turning the other way and seeing Lucas as well, leaned against a seat on the other side of my bed.
"How are you, man?" He asks with a stressed look in his eyes and dark circles that I've only just noticed.
"What is she doing here?" I ask simply without mincing words.
I'm beyond irritated from only seeing her. It's a wonder how I was able to put up with her for years and fuck with her for so long.
"Silas..." Lucas begins to offer his usual crap when she butts in.
"I'm right here, you know."
"Exactly, that's the problem. You're not supposed to be here, in my room. This is restricted area for you."
She scoffs, folding her hands below her chest. "You're the one that needed my help."
"The only thing I need from you is to remain broken from me, Elena. Maybe also remain a 7 feet distance from me at all times."
"Quit being a brooding baby." She babbles, rising to her feet angrily.
She turns to Lucas now. "I'll be outside."
With that, she walks out, leaving just the both of us.
Once she's gone, I turn to Lucas again, glaring at him while he avoids my eyes.
This bastard...
I try to sit up but heavy weights weigh on my hands.
It's only then that I look down and notice the chains holding me down to my bed.
"Why the fuck am I chained down like some feral dog?" I ask, seething.
"That's because you could turn into one at any given moment. You attacked Adam and I the moment we came to pin you down in your wolf form."
I notice the scars on his arm in the places where his shirt is ripped. The red ugly bruises and tears in his skin.
They weren't healing as fast because they were marks inflicted by an Alpha wolf.
Guilt briefly flashes, but I had warned them to stay away, they hadn't listened.
"That doesn't explain Elena being in my room. Do I have to explain for the umpteenth time why she shouldn't be here?" I ask and sigh, relaxing back onto my bed.
Lucas remains silent for a while, still not looking my way. There's something about him that seems dark, like a gray cloud hovering above him.
He's not the type to leave his emotions on his sleeves, knowing it's a weakness.
However, in this moment, he just looked somewhat broken.
"Your wolf grew feral for no reason. Once you were knocked out, we needed to guarantee that you wouldn't break free and go on a rampage, so we called Elena - seeing as she's your mate."
My wolf grumbles within me before I can attempt to push through again, but I subdue him easily as I have always. "Elena isn't my mate." I say coldly "If anything, you might have made the situation worse."
"I know." He gives in easily, unlike previous times.
He seems tired and unwilling to argue.
"Maybe if it had been Freya..." He says, turning to me.
"Freya isn't either."
"But you want her."
I remain silent.
I cannot imagine anyone else making me feel the way
I do. The possibilities are extremely slim, yet she was a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of discovery, a rare precious gem.
My gem.
If some day my mate should show up from nowhere,
I'd never hesitate even for a second to choose Freya and only her.
I face him again with determination to answer.
"Yes, I do."
