SILAS' POV:
I step into the conference slash office I'm entitled to use as my personal space as the future Alpha King.
The room is mostly never in use until school breaks and in emergency situations like rogue trespassing, or in this case where there's an abducted student.
We've put it to good use for the past weeks for Freya's case, and since just recently, I've stepped down for health reasons and given Lucas rights to take over investigations.
I'm not supposed to be here right now.
But I cannot shake off the nerve, or rest till I know what's going on.
For some reason, Lucas has been absent for 24 hours now, even this room is empty with no one in sight, only a few documents hanging around.
I walk to the table, taking a look at a few document, hoping there's some new clue that's popped up since I've been bedridden.
But instead, there's nothing...
Except the strange discovery that, for some reason, Lucas is opening up the rogue case again even after I had crossed out that part as a possibility.
He's also ended the Elena case as well, which isn't even a surprise, I must admit.
Still, why is he so bent on the rogues narrative...
I turn to the door just before it's suddenly pushed open with enough force to almost rip it off it's hinges.
Xena walks in suddenly with a rushed breath, and looks up at me excitedly.
"Silas. Just the man I was looking for!"
"Shouldn't you be home?" I ask dryly, retuning back to the papers infront of me, assessing them.
It's very much unlike Lucas to continue chasing a dead end's trail, unless he has some reason for going in this direction.
"I decided to come back and help with the investigation." Xena says from behind me.
Oh, she's still here?
I turn to her again, and say tiredly.
"No."
Her excited smile drops suddenly as she stares back at me in shock. Like she actually thought I would agree to her insane idea?
"Why not?"
"I'm sure that's the last thing Lucas wants, and the last thing I want is him unable to focus on his job because you're too busy getting into dangerous situations." I explain.
She pouts her face in a frown, folding her hands below her chest suddenly.
"Lucas doesn't get to decide what I do, and you of all people know how much more capable I am than the lot of wolves you mobilized in your search team. I have much more determination, and she's my friend, so I'm willing to crawl into the depths of hell to get to her." She speaks with determination and her shoulders raised high.
I sigh, dropping the papers in my hand now.
She has a point.
From what I know, she has the whole warrior female, Zeta wolf thing going on, much more capable than half the highly ranked male wolves in school.
Her determination is just what I need.
Fuck it.
"Fine, you're in."
She screeches, jumping up and down like a kid again. I roll my eyes, turning away from her again and focusing on more files.
The frown on my forehead deepens further as I continue to go through a few left on the table.
So, they changed the direction of investigations to a dead end and for two whole days, no one has been mobilized to search the perimeters.
Instead, a break was issued for the purpose of 'resting body and mind' in preparation for what's to come?
What the fuck is he doing?
I growl now, feeling my anger rising by the minute.
"By the way... how's Lucas doing?" Xena, still being there and for some reason, not wanting to leave after she's gotten what she wants, asks from behind me.
The tone she uses makes her seem shy and timid, like she's embarrassed for asking.
But right now, I'm in no mood to play middle person, not when it's clear Lucas is running my operation into the ground.
Before I can speak, the door pulls open slowly and Lucas slowly walks in with his head hung low.
Speak of the fucking devil.
"Lucas?" Xena speaks first, just as his head shoots up, noticing the both of us in here.
"What's going on?" His eyes move from Xena to me and then, down to the papers in my hand.
His face crumbles, instantly going all defensive.
"Silas, what are you doing?" He says, stalking over to me without another glance at Xena.
He takes all the scattered files in his hands, packing them up into a neat pile again, like there's absolutely nothing wrong or off with any of them.
It only makes my blood boil hotter. "What the fuck is this?" I ask calmly, only barely holding on to my anger as I flap the paper in my hand infront of him. "An indefinite suspension on all matters concerning the search? What the fucking hell is this Lucas!"
He avoids my eyes as he stacks the papers neatly.
"You were working those guys to the bone, and they needed to rest unless they'd all get bedridden like you were, so I gave them a break."
I laugh bitterly at his horrible, poorly thought out excuse. From his words, it's obvious he had never expected me to go snooping in the office on my own.
"You didn't just give them a few days of rest, you gave an indefinite holiday when Freya is still fucking out there, trapped and going through hell for all we know."
"Freya will be fine!" He yells out suddenly, snapping at me.
My wolf doesn't take any of that bullshit.
In a micro second, I have him pinned to the wall in a chokehold, bearing out my teeth right at him.
I growl inhumanly, only letting a part of my wolf to the surface. It's anger is justified just as mine is, so it should as well have the satisfaction of choking him.
"DON'T FUCKING DO THAT." I snarl lowly. Xena runs to us in an instant, attempting at prying my hands away from Lucas' neck while he chokes. "Silas!" She screams, tugging at my arm.
I snarl at her, warning her to let go unless she's ready to be the object of my rage. She whimpers, jumping back as though she's been stung.
I turn to him again. "You fucking bastard, I trust you with something important to me and this is how you repay me? Fucking every single shit up?"
My wolf whispers to tighten the hold on his neck till he croaks, and I oblige with the request.
He coughs now.
"Si-Silas..." He says. "Even after everything, telling you how I feel about her, you're still so self-absorbed in getting Elena to the extent that you would sabotage the entire search." "It's not like that, Silas."
"Then what is it? ANSWER ME." I choke him tighter till his eyes turn bright red and tears well up in them.
Till I'm sure he's in pain.
Then I toss his body against the wall on the other side of the room. He hits his back, sliding down to the floor, coughing and breathing heavily. Taking in as much oxygen as he can into his lungs.
I stalk up to him slowly, towering over his form on the floor.
"She will show up, Silas, I swear." He says the same crap again with his head hung low.
"You better hope she does soon. If not, you're going to be the next missing person."
I warn him, walking away.
Just as I do Xena, runs to his side, attempting to comfort him.
I ignore the two, going back to the table and looking for more shit he's fucked up in the few days I've left him to take over, thinking of a way to reverse it all.
"Fuck." I say, punching the table hard and causing it to crack in the middle. "All this wasted time could have been used in finding an actual clue. We could have been a step closer to finding Freya." I think out loud, tugging on my hair.
I blame myself again. Everything is all my fault. From the very beginning.
I should have given her the protection she needed; the assurance. I should have been with her. I should have never handed the case over to Lucas.
Her safety is more important than anything and everything, but I let Lucas get into my head for a moment.
I'm so sorry, Freya. Please, baby.
"Actually, I think I have a clue."
I pause instantly, turning to Xena again.
She's helped Lucas to his feet and on to another chair.
Both Lucas and I turn to her simultaneously. "What do you mean?" I ask.
She looks reluctant at first, looking at Lucas. Then she sighs, turning to me again.
"Okay, don't think I'm crazy or anything, and I know it sounds stupid right now..." She begins, ranting nervously and fiddling with her fingers. "Just spit it out, Xena." I say impatiently, already on the edge.
"Fine, fine... I think the Alpha King has something to do with this."
