When Zara woke up in the territory hospital, she felt completely disoriented.
She touched her now-flat stomach, her heart clenching with pain. The pup was gone.
"Room 23, where are your pack members? We need payment for additional treatment. You've been poisoned with wolfsbane and need to cooperate with the police investigation. Your pup... we couldn't save it." The nurse noticed she was awake and began asking detailed questions about her situation.
Zara's fingers trembled as she picked up her phone to call Kai. It went straight to voicemail—his phone was off.
She gave a bitter smile. After he'd left last night, he hadn't answered any of her calls or even tried to reach her.
He'd once promised he'd be there for her anytime she needed him.
Now he was ignoring her calls to stay with Vixen.
"I don't have any pack members. I'll pay the bills myself." Zara replied weakly.
"Wait, you can barely sit up. Let me take care of it—just get some rest." The kind nurse stopped Zara from getting up.
As she left the room after taking notes, the nurse couldn't help but comment, "Moon Goddess, she-wolves can have such different lives. There's this other woman here who's just got a little bleeding, and her Alpha mate's losing his mind—rented out the whole VIP floor, flew in healers from all over the supernatural world overnight."
The nurse glanced back at Zara. "This poor she-wolf was poisoned and lost her pup, and she doesn't even have a single pack member here."
Zara heard the nurse's words and knew she was talking about Kai and Vixen. Her heart felt completely numb.
Throughout her entire hospital stay, Kai never contacted her once.
She went straight to the pack house, took her mother's moonstone ring, and stored all the meaningful heirlooms in a permanent safety deposit box.
She planned to leave there and never return.
Then she went to the supernatural registry to change her identity. She wanted to make sure Kai could never find her.
When Zara returned home, she found Vixen curled up on the sofa, wrapped in her blanket, munching on snacks while binge-watching shows.
She frowned slightly, and before she could speak, Vixen jumped up from the couch.
"Luna Zara! You're back! Did you grab dinner yet? Kai went to pick up some dessert—want me to tell him to get you some chocolate?" Vixen's face was all smiles, barely concealing her smugness.
"Who said you could touch my stuff?" Zara's face was cold as she looked at the messy coffee table, feeling suffocated.
She'd always hated people touching her things, especially having someone make a mess in her home.
Kai knew her habits and rarely brought people over, and when he did, he'd always clean and purify everything afterward with moon-blessed sage.
Now he was letting Vixen lie in her spot, use her blanket, eat her snacks...
"Oh, are you pissed? Fine, here's your precious stuff back." Vixen dumped the bag of chips directly onto Zara, raising an eyebrow. "Why don't you clean it up yourself."
Zara was stunned, about to respond when Vixen suddenly dropped to her knees and started cleaning up the mess.
"Oh, I'm so sorry, Luna Zara! I was literally about to pass out from hunger—that's the only reason I touched your snacks. Please don't be mad at me—I'll get everything spotless, I promise!" Vixen's eyes instantly filled with tears, her voice trembling with fake remorse.
"Babe, what's going on here?"
The sudden change in Vixen's demeanor caught Zara off guard. Hearing Kai's voice behind her, she finally understood everything.
Zara turned around just in time to see him looking down at Vixen on the floor, clearly catching the flash of concern in his amber eyes.
"I shouldn't have touched Luna Zara's things without asking first." Vixen kept her head down, voice choked with tears.
"Right, my Luna hates when people touch her stuff. Why is the living room such a mess?" Kai frowned. "Take your dessert and go home. Don't come to my pack house anymore."
Vixen looked stunned, slowly standing up to accept the dessert Kai handed her.
But the next second, as Vixen stood up, she seemed to lose her balance and stumbled directly toward Zara. Zara lost her footing and they both started falling backward together.
In a split second, Kai rushed over and caught Vixen in his arms.
Meanwhile, Zara crashed backward, her head slamming hard into the oak cabinet. Blood immediately started flowing as dizziness overwhelmed her. The last thing she saw was Kai holding Vixen tightly in his arms...
