Zara slept for a long time. When thirst finally woke her up, the entire room was pitch black.
She struggled to sit up and instinctively reached toward the nightstand—Kai always left her a glass of moon-blessed water there every night.
Tonight, there was nothing.
Zara's heart sank, then she laughed bitterly at herself. After Vixen got pregnant, no matter how hard Kai tried to act, he could never love her the way he used to.
She got up and headed downstairs. As she passed the guest room, she heard Kai's voice and instinctively stopped.
"I feel so terrible that Luna Zara got hurt because of me. I'm such a klutz—I should've been more careful." Vixen was sobbing.
"You're pregnant—you need to eat. Zara's just making a huge deal out of nothing. It's my fault for spoiling her so much. Stop crying, baby—it's breaking my heart." Kai held her close, stroking her hair. "Goddess, you've gotten so emotional lately."
"Stop being mean to me." Vixen pouted playfully, her voice sweet and whiny.
Kai's Adam's apple bobbed as he looked away. After what happened on the boat, he'd almost caused Vixen to lose the pup—he didn't dare take her anymore.
"Is my Alpha all worked up? Too bad Luna Zara's hurt and can't satisfy you properly."
"Even if she wasn't hurt, she's got nothing on you in bed, you little she-wolf. I can control myself until the pup's safe, then I'm gonna claim you properly for seducing me like this." Kai's lips curved into a smirk.
"Let me help you." After saying this, Vixen slid down his body and knelt between his legs...
The contrast between her seductive face and innocent voice, combined with her movements, made Kai groan involuntarily.
"Fuck, baby, you're so good at this."
Seeing this scene again, Zara felt absolutely nothing. She numbly continued downstairs to get water.
Maybe because of her head injury, she'd slept incredibly deeply and didn't wake up until the next evening.
"Babe, you're the one I was trying to save, but you fell too fast—I couldn't catch you..." Kai rushed to explain when he saw her wake up, his eyes shifty and avoiding hers.
Zara looked at him, too tired to call out his lies. She simply asked flatly, "Where's Vixen?"
"She didn't do it on purpose. Don't be mad at her—she's just a clumsy pup, and she nearly hurt herself as well." Kai made excuses for her.
"I see." Zara's tone was completely neutral, showing no emotion whatsoever. "Tomorrow's the anniversary of my parents' death. Will you come with me?"
"Of course I will." Kai seemed relieved that Zara wasn't angry, but then he studied her more carefully.
Something felt different about her. When she looked at him, there seemed to be less love in her eyes.
Kai wanted to ask about it, but Zara had already closed her eyes.
She spent the entire night in a drowsy haze, seeming to sleep constantly. Several times Kai tried to talk to her, but she didn't respond.
The next day was the anniversary of her parents' death. Zara got up early, washed up, and put on a black outfit before getting into Kai's car.
Kai thoughtfully prepared breakfast and moonflowers for her. Seeing her pale complexion, he felt sorry for her, thinking she was grieving, and tried to make conversation during the drive.
Zara remained largely uninterested, barely responding.
Just as they reached the cemetery, Kai got a phone call. His expression immediately turned tense, and he slammed on the brakes, pulling over to the side of the road.
Zara lurched forward unexpectedly, the seatbelt cutting into her shoulder. She couldn't help but ask, "What's wrong?"
"Baby, there's an emergency at the pack safety issues. I need to handle it real quick." Kai's face was ashen, his eyes filled with barely contained anxiety and worry. "Go see your parents first—I'll catch up with you in a few."
Zara nodded understandingly and opened the car door to get out. Before she was even steady on her feet, Kai was already driving off frantically, nearly knocking her over.
Watching the dust kicked up by his tires, Zara smiled. Kai seemed to have forgotten his phone was connected to Bluetooth—she'd clearly seen the caller ID: "Vixen Baby."
Vixen was hurt and had called Kai crying. Without hesitation, he'd chosen to abandon her to go see Vixen.
But she didn't care anymore.
She no longer loved Kai, and it seemed like even her hatred for him had disappeared.
She struggled to sit up and instinctively reached toward the nightstand—Kai always left her a glass of moon-blessed water there every night.
