When Kai received Vixen's call, he abandoned Zara at the cemetery and rushed to a derelict factory on the outskirts of town.
Vixen was cowering behind some debris, trembling with fear. Her cheek was red and swollen, her dress had a streak of blood on it, she was covered in mud, and her hands were pressed tightly over her mouth as tears streamed down her face.
One look at her and Kai felt his heart break. He rushed to her side and pulled her into his arms.
"I was so scared..." Vixen finally broke down sobbing, her shoulders shaking with each cry.
Kai kept kissing her forehead and rushed her to the pack hospital.
Thankfully, she was just shaken up—the pup was fine.
"What the hell happened? Who dared to kidnap you?" Kai's face was dark with rage, his whole body radiating menace.
Vixen bit her lip and said nothing, so he ordered his pack warriors to investigate.
He had no idea that the investigators had already been bought off by Vixen. She pinned everything on Zara.
It was Zara who wanted to teach Vixen a lesson. She'd somehow found out about the pregnancy and was ruthlessly trying to get rid of the pup.
Kai fell silent for a moment, seemingly unable to believe it.
But faced with solid evidence, he had no choice but to accept it.
He ordered his warriors to grab whoever had attacked Vixen and beat the hell out of them—a warning for Zara.
Kai took Vixen home, completely unaware that it was Zara who'd been beaten. Meanwhile Vixen was secretly recording his every word and action to show Zara later.
After comforting Vixen and hand-feeding her dinner, Kai finally had a moment to contact Zara.
[Hey babe, you home yet? Vixen had some kind of accident and called me freaking out. I couldn't just leave her hanging, so I took her to the hospital.]
[Zara, please tell me you didn't have someone go after Vixen. She literally saved your life—why would you want to hurt her?]
[Once she's feeling better, you two need to sit down and work this shit out. I can't have this kind of drama happening again.]
Kai's messages were full of accusations and warnings. He didn't even realize that his heart had unconsciously shifted toward Vixen.
His messages went unanswered, which made him anxious. But thinking about how Zara had been throwing tantrums lately and refusing to answer his calls, irritation flared up instead.
He'd spoiled Zara too much, making her feel like she could act out however she wanted around him.
This time, Zara had gone way too far. He wouldn't rush back to comfort her like he usually did—she needed to realize her mistake.
Kai put down his phone and returned to Vixen's side. Looking at her pale face, Zara's image suddenly flashed in his mind.
Lately, Zara had looked really pale too.
His heart sank heavily, as if he'd overlooked something important, but he couldn't figure out what.
"What's wrong, Alpha?" Vixen slowly opened her eyes, noticing the troubled expression on his face.
Kai snapped back to reality and instinctively asked, "Vixen, have you noticed anything... off about Zara lately?"
Vixen froze, a flash of malice crossing her eyes. "Maybe she's still mad that you neglected her on your anniversary. She's probably still upset about it."
"You rest up. I'm gonna go check on her." In the end, Kai couldn't let go of his concern for Zara. He stood up to leave.
"Kai, it hurts."
Vixen suddenly spoke with tears in her voice, and Kai's steps faltered.
