I watched as Celeste tightened her brows, her fingers gripping even harder.
"Since you want to take part in the race, then let's have a proper showdown of our skills. Of course, it's also a chance for you to make a fool of yourself! Although Freya ranks first among the co-drivers, it's not her who's driving. No matter how talented she is, without an excellent main driver, it's all for nothing!"
Celeste had a hint of a sarcastic smile on the corner of her mouth. It seemed that he had already seen the scene of me, a novice, being in a flurry on the track.
After saying that, she swayed her soft and tender waist and walked away.
"Zara is too stubborn, and I couldn't persuade her. There's nothing we can do," she said to Sterling as she got closer to him, shrugging her shoulders as if she was really helpless.
Sterling didn't say a word and just walked off to another place.
The draw ended quickly, and then Freya came back.
I gave Freya the results of the draw, and in return, she handed me the race information she'd collected.
"Those young alphas who got drawn into your group were just complaining. Just wait; you'll show them what a real KING can do!" Freya said.
I just gave a faint smile. "If you was the one to drive from the start, could you guarantee that we'd make it to the finals?"
Freya pointed at herself. "Darling Zara, you..."
"If I show all my cards right from the start, where's the fun in that?" I lazily interrupted her, even squinting my eyes. I must have looked like a lazy yet dangerous she-wolf.
"How about we switch? You'll be the main driver, and I can be the co-driver."
Freya couldn't help but curse, "Moon Goddess!"
But the next moment, she gave me a thumbs-up.
"That's bold! Whoever goes up against you is in for a tough time!"
I'm different from Freya. Freya might talk big, but I usually keep my thoughts to myself. However, no one should ever think that I'm weak and can be easily bullied.
When I'm really determined to retaliate, no alpha can match me.
Freya happily agreed to my decision and excitedly tapped the steering wheel. "Although I haven't formally driven as a main driver, I've been with Drift King and can handle these showy rich alphas easily!"
It was almost time for our group to take part in the selection race, and we were all getting ourselves ready mentally.
Despite seeming like she didn't care, Celeste couldn't help but sneak a look in our direction.
Celeste saw that I was still sitting motionless in the co-pilot's seat and couldn't help but sneer to herself. She seemed to have figured out that I was inexperienced, waiting for me to make a fool of myself on the track.
On the other side, Robin, who had been complaining earlier, still had some hope at first. But now, seeing that I hadn't moved from the co-driver seat, he lost all hope.
Frustrated, he kicked the tire.
Had Drift King disappeared forever in the last four years, or had something happened to him?
If it was like this, he'd always be overshadowed by Drift King's aura. What a joke!
Thinking like this, his mood got even worse. He didn't even feel like racing anymore. He got out of the car, ready to leave.
But his pack brothers quickly stopped him. "Even if you're not participating, at least stay and watch the race."
"You've come this far; it'd be a pity to leave."
"Also, it's your group's race. Leaving now, how would that look?"
Annoyed, Robin was forced to sit back in the car, grumbling but not saying a word.
Meanwhile, in the same group as me, when they saw Freya as the driver, the others' expressions brightened a bit. Someone came over and patted Freya on the shoulder. "Thanks. These wolves treated a gem like sand. They'll regret it when you beat them later."
Freya chuckled. "They won't know what hit them!"
"Enough talking, start your engine!" I had an indifferent look in my eyes.
Even though I was a co-driver, I took my role seriously. My small face showed my seriousness as I gave instructions.
"Got it!" Freya fastened her seatbelt, her hands firmly gripping the steering wheel.
When the starting gun fired, she slammed the accelerator to the floor.
As a main-driver, Freya was really aware of what was going on around her. I provided the technical guidance, "Accelerate! Stay close to the line! Steady..."
Following my instructions, the car smoothly moved along the track, staying right on the racing line.
A few minutes later, it was over.
The final results showed that, even though we weren't in first place, Freya and our team had made it to the finals.
"Didn't I do well, sis?" Freya showed me the final ranking that had been sent to her phone. We were last among the finalists.
I let out a light chuckle. "Indeed, you did."
In the distance, Celeste smiled silently with a smile on the corner of her mouth.
With such a bottom result, even if we enters the finals, we can't make any waves.
Last place.
While I was lost in thought, I suddenly heard a clear voice calling Celeste's name.
"Celeste, I challenge you!"
The one speaking was none other than Freya herself. She lifted her chin, wearing a smile that seemed challenging despite looking cheerful.
Celeste must have felt disdain in her heart, but she didn't say anything and just covered her mouth with a smile.
"How funny! You ranked last, and yet you dare to challenge Celeste?" Wilson, who was on Celeste's side, said in a scornful voice.
Still smiling, Freya didn't get angry. She didn't look at Celeste or Wilson and just walked straight up to Sterling. "Alpha Sterling, what do you think?"
Freya's behavior wasn't very graceful and was really out of character.
Everyone knew she was my friend, so they thought she was just standing up for me, and nobody said anything more.
Sterling had an indifferent look in his eyes and didn't even glance at Freya. "It's your own decision."
"That's good." Freya came back and then turned to Celeste again. "Celeste, are you afraid?"
"Afraid?" Celeste must have thought Freya was really ridiculous. No mention that she ranked first among the female drivers, how could she be afraid of Freya?
"Miss Freya, think carefully. Although you're a skilled co-driver, there's a difference between being a co-driver and a main driver." Celeste always presented herself well. Even if she looked down on Freya, she still kept a fake polite and respectful tone.
"My skills might not be enough, but someone else's might be." Freya pushed me forward. "Celeste, are you willing to accept the challenge?"
I was speechless for a moment. "..."
What kind of friend was Freya? She put me and Celeste in the same group. Should I really go all out, or should I hold back a bit?
Freya gave my shoulder a little squeeze, and the message was clear: She came here to humiliate Celeste, and of course, Sterling too.
Celeste's expression turned really dark. There was even a touch of anger in her eyes.
Freya could barely make it to the finals herself, and now she was pushing me to join?
This was clearly meant to humiliate her!
"Celeste, make sure to give it your all, otherwise, losing would be really embarrassing." With that remark, Freya seemed to be suggesting that Celeste wasn't capable of winning.
Celeste had never been underestimated like this before. Her lips twitched a little, but she nodded. "Fine!"
"Freya, there's no need to humiliate others like this." Wilson and a few others walked over, accusing Freya.
With a smile that didn't really seem like a smile, Freya said, "We haven't competed yet. Who's humiliating who is still uncertain."
Nobody believed her words.
Celeste and the others still thought Freya was deliberately humiliating Celeste.
Freya didn't bother to explain further. She pushed my shoulder. "You go get ready."
I realized that Freya's arrangements were meant to give me a chance to let out my anger.
I nodded in agreement, got up, and walked silently towards my car.
As I reached for the door, another hand stopped me and pushed me back with a bang before shutting the door tightly!
I looked up in surprise and saw a face that was faintly filled with anger.
