The next morning, I woke up to find Zachary already gone for work. Still groggy, I shuffled to the bathroom in my nightgown—only to nearly collide with Shane, who was mid-workout in the living room.
He wasn't towering, but he had that kind of build—broad shoulders, lean muscle, the kind of body that made you look twice. And right then? He was shirtless, sweat glistening over his abs, his arms taut as he finished a set of push-ups. The sight hit me like a jolt, sending warmth flooding through me.
Then it hit me—my nightgown. Thin. Sheer. Definitely not meant for an audience.
"Morning, Alice," Shane said, his voice rough from exertion. His eyes flickered over me before he cleared his throat. "Did I, uh… keep you up last night?"
Heat rushed to my cheeks. "No! No, you didn't. And thanks again for helping Zach earlier..." I stammered, then bolted for the bedroom like my dignity depended on it.
Later, over coffee, I learned Shane had taken time off—his place was under renovation, and work was slow. His girlfriend, Lily, had already left for her job.
Alone in the bathroom afterward, I caught my reflection—the way the silk clung, the curves I usually ignored. For a reckless second, I wondered what it'd be like to have a man like Shane look at me and want.
Then I remembered Zachary's indifference last night, Shane's girlfriend, and the whole fantasy curdled into guilt. What was wrong with me?
By evening, the apartment was dark when I got home. Assuming I was alone, I toed off my heels and made for the shower—only for the bathroom door to swing open.
Shane stood there, dripping wet, wearing nothing but his boxers.
We froze.
His face burned. Mine probably matched.
And for one endless, breathless second, neither of us moved.
