Damian's maniacal laughter cut through the air as he grabbed a plastic bucket from behind him. Before I could react, he upended it over me in one violent motion.
The sharp, acrid smell hit my nostrils instantly—gasoline. My entire body went rigid with terror.
"Stay back!" I shrieked, my voice cracking. "He's doused me in gasoline!"
The two men hesitated when they saw Damian wasn't armed with a knife. But in that split second of hesitation, Damian flicked open a lighter with practiced ease, the tiny flame dancing dangerously close to my soaked clothing.
The sight of that flickering fire made everyone freeze—even the air seemed to stop moving.
Satisfied with their reaction, Damian turned his wild eyes back to me. When he spoke, his voice was raw, guttural with barely contained fury.
"This is all your doing, Alice! If you hadn't dumped me, hadn't told everyone I was some pathetic limp noodle in bed—"
"Police! Hands where we can see them!"
A SWAT team materialized on the hillside, rifles trained on Damian with lethal precision.
"You called the cops?" Damian's face twisted in betrayal. "Fine. We'll go together then—"
His arm jerked. The lighter touched my sleeve.
WHOOSH.
Flames erupted across my body.
BANG!
The gunshot echoed across the hillside. Damian howled as the bullet tore through his arm. Cops swarmed him while others beat at the flames engulfing me. Through the smoke and chaos, I saw Zachary and Shane charging forward.
The fire was out in seconds. Aside from some minor burns and singed clothing, I'd gotten stupidly lucky.
"Alice, I hope you burn in hell! I hate you! I HATE YOU!"
Damian's screams followed him as officers dragged him away. The adrenaline crash hit me like a freight train—my vision tunneled, my legs turned to jelly. The last thing I felt was Zachary's strong arms catching me as the world went black.
The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and bad coffee when I came to. Doctors confirmed what I already knew—I'd gotten away with barely a scratch.
Only then did Zachary tell me the whole story.
He hadn't known Damian was my college sweetheart—my first everything.
It started with Shane's little sister. She'd struggled with depression after a toxic relationship... and eventually jumped from her dorm window. Everyone blamed her mental health—until Shane found a hidden flash drive in her things.
Illicit photos. A video of Damian assaulting her.
But Damian had covered his tracks like a pro. The police investigation went nowhere.
Then Shane found the final file—a surveillance photo of me leaving my office.
Shane warned Zachary. They set the trap—Lily and Shane moving in, the hidden cameras in our living room, even the KTV ambush. Every time I'd felt watched, every creepy incident... all Damian.
They never guessed my ex would be the stalker.
Damian blamed me for his downfall. Said I'd emasculated him. But I'd never said those things.
Still... maybe I'd helped create the monster he became.
Later, we heard Damian got twenty to life. Not nearly enough.
