The moment he walked away, Liam's expression turned stormy.
"What's everyone gawking at? Don't you have jobs to do?"
The office froze for a split second before heads snapped down, fingers flying over keyboards in a flurry of fake productivity. But the furious clacking gave them away—everyone was deep in their group chats, no doubt dissecting the drama.
Not that I could focus on any of it.
When was the last time I'd seen Edward?
A decade ago.
A whole ten years. How had that much time slipped by? And now, here he was—not just back in my life, but sitting at the top of the corporate ladder, my boss's boss.
My cheeks burned just thinking about the past. God, I hoped he didn't remember—or at least, that he wouldn't hold my teenage idiocy against me.
Of course, the arrival of the new big shot meant one thing: a mandatory welcome lunch with all the department heads.
Nick from General Admin had booked the place. And despite the usual office power plays, everyone was on their best behavior—fake smiles, polite laughter, the whole charade.
Edward had changed. The quiet, reserved guy I once knew was gone, replaced by someone effortlessly charming, holding the entire table captive with his stories. By dessert, the mood was light, at least on the surface.
He didn't seem to recognize me.
I should've been relieved. Instead, there was this weird, nagging disappointment. Maybe because we'd been inseparable once. Or maybe because of all the things I'd never said.
The dinner dragged on until 2 a.m. Our project site was in the middle of nowhere, and at this hour, catching a cab was next to impossible.
A light rain had started, the kind that made the air smell fresh but left you shivering.
Of course, today was the one day I hadn't driven. I was frantically upping the fare on my ride app when Liam sidled up way too close.
His breath reeked of whiskey, his smile sloppy with intent.
"Yuna, you live near Gerald Road, right? Let me give you a ride."
I knew exactly what kind of ride he was offering.
What I hadn't expected was for him to be this bold.
Keeping my voice steady, I smiled. "No need, Mr. Murray. My boyfriend's picking me up."
Whether it was the booze or bruised ego, his face twisted.
Instead of backing off, he snapped.
"Yuna White, who the hell do you think you are? Too good for me now?"
