That day, after an especially exhausting meeting, I lingered in the conference room to review my notes once everyone else had left. I needed to untangle the mess of the day's chaos.
That's when Edward appeared, leaning in slightly.
"The tabby's due any day now," he said. "Since her injuries aren't fully healed, the vet recommended I bring her in for the delivery. What do you think?"
Wait—was he actually asking me?
I turned to look at him, but his expression was as unreadable as ever, like this was the most ordinary question in the world. Still, his words caught me off guard.
Honestly, I'd been so buried in work that I'd forgotten all about the cat. If he hadn't mentioned her, I wouldn't have even remembered.
When we'd first left the tabby in his care, I'd promised to visit. But here we were, a full month later, and I hadn't stopped by once.
A pang of guilt hit me. "If everything's already set up, then yeah, of course it's fine…"
"Do you want to come with me?" Edward asked suddenly.
I opened my mouth—but nothing came out.
It wasn't that I didn't want to say yes. It was the realization that the due date was just an estimate. The cat might not give birth for hours—maybe even a full day. Which meant… extended one-on-one time with him.
Wouldn't that be… awkward?
As if sensing my hesitation, Edward cleared his throat. "It's just—we found her together. You've been busy, so you haven't had the chance to visit, but I thought you might want to be there for the birth."
…Okay, he had a point.
Too tired to overthink it, I hesitated only a second before nodding. "Sure."
