A trio of tiny kittens—one snowy white, one pitch black, and one tabby just like their mama—lay curled together.
The newborns looked so delicate, their tiny bodies rising and falling with each breath. Afraid our human scent might disturb them, we kept our distance, watching with bated breath from the sidelines.
Thankfully, mama cat and her little ones were all safe and sound. The tension in the room melted away as we finally exhaled in relief.
"You're out pretty late," Edward remarked, his timing as flawless—and irritating—as ever. "Won't your boyfriend start worrying if you don't head home soon?"

After all this time together, he had to know I didn't have a boyfriend. He was just trying to get under my skin—and succeeding.
But then, to my complete surprise, Edward burst into laughter. Not just a polite chuckle, but full-on, bent-over, shoulder-shaking laughter. His grin was so bright, so unguarded, he looked like a kid who'd just pulled off the world's best prank.
