Luke and I lingered outside for what felt like forever.
When we finally left the theater, I ignored the third call from home—letting it go to voicemail again.
He glanced up at me. "Seriously? Not gonna answer that?"
I shrugged. "At this point, whatever lies Parker's fed them about me is already set in stone. Why bother picking up just to get yelled at?"
Luke burst out laughing. "Damn, I never knew you had this rebellious streak."
We found a 24-hour BBQ joint and slid into a booth—two broke teenagers surviving on Luke's trust fund money.
"You drink, goody two-shoes?" He nodded at the two beers that magically appeared on our table.
"Owner's treat," I said, popping the cap off one.
Luke raised an eyebrow. "We don't exactly look twenty-one."
"You look like a spoiled rich kid ditching school to impress some girl," I shot back.
His laughter was contagious—soon I was grinning too. He poured us each a glass with dramatic flair. "Then let's act the part."
Beer tasted like bitter disappointment. I coughed as the bubbles burned my throat, barely hearing Luke set his glass down over the sizzle of meat and Friday night chatter.
"Honestly? I'm done with him too."
He swirled his drink. "Known Parker since diapers... He wasn't always like this. Just stubborn, you know? Said 'left' when he meant 'right.' But he'd never hurt people on purpose."
A wistful smile. "Once in third grade, some kids stole my lunch money. Parker came home with a black eye and wouldn't tell anyone why—until I saw his dad reaching for the belt. Had to barge in crying like a maniac to stop the beating."
The ice cubes clinked as he took a long sip. "Everything changed after middle school. His mom... let's just say there was a scandal. His dad's fists did the talking. That house became a warzone, and Parker—" Luke made an explosion gesture with his free hand.
"Then came that stupid Truth or Dare game. That's when he decided to hate you." He clinked his glass against mine. "But screw it. You've put up with his crap long enough. He made his bed."
I stared at the foam dissolving in my glass. Before I could take another sip, Luke snatched it away.
"Nice try, honor student."
I fake-pouted. "Says the guy who's one drink away from face-planting into these ribs." Leaning in, I teased, "You're built like a grizzly. How exactly am I supposed to drag your drunk ass home?"
To my delight, his ears turned beet red as he scooted back. "Jesus, personal space much? Ever heard of boundaries?"
