The lock of hair. The one he'd hacked off to "appease" the school's queen bee. My fingers instinctively brushed the uneven strands near my ear.
Parker's grin widened.
"Proof," he said slowly, "that you'll always be my little stalker."
I didn't even blink.
"Then die alone with it, you psycho."
The sports meet arrived a few days later.
Parker had been suspiciously quiet—probably busy with the joint exams right after, plus the basketball finals.
The exams reminded me of Fiona's warning:
"Parker bought answers for this one. I swiped his transaction records."
As his (ex?) girlfriend, she'd had full access to his phone. That USB drive was now buried in my bag.
Lost in thought, I barely registered the cold soda can pressed to my cheek.
I took it without looking. "Luke, boys shouldn't drink so much soda."
"Oh, so the good girl cracks jokes now?"
Luke pinched my cheek. I smacked his hand away. "Hands to yourself."
He plopped beside me, grinning. "No events for you?"
I popped the tab. "Tired. Lazy. Can't be bothered."
Luke laughed. "Zero athleticism, huh?"
"And what's your excuse, Mr. MVP?"
He missed the sarcasm entirely. "Basketball finals this afternoon. You'll watch?"
I showed up—but Luke was nowhere in sight.
Instead, a new player stood on the court.
Then I spotted Parker.
White jersey. Number [6].
And the star sticker on the lower left—Luke's sticker.
My blood ran cold.
"Zoe."
The basketball thudded as Parker grabbed my wrist, his grip vise-tight.
"Leaving so soon? Don't you want to watch me play?"
Every eye in the gym locked onto us.
He leaned in, his whisper a blade:
"Or… wanna guess what happened to Luke?"
Crack.
The slap echoed through the gym.
Parker didn't flinch. Didn't retaliate.
The crowd gaped.
I exhaled. "That was for the ball you threw at me."
The basketball hit the floor as Parker seized my wrist again, his face flushed with rage.
"Zoe. You really wanna do this?"
"I already did."
Trapped in his grip, I stopped struggling.
"I told my parents everything. The kiss. The isolation. The school transfer. You turned everyone against me. Parker—this isn't you. When did you become this?"
His fingers twitched.
I yanked free.
"Where's Luke?"
Parker's lips curled into something ugly.
"Where is he?" He laughed. "If you're so brave—go find him yourself."
