The harder I tried to avoid him, the more relentless he became.
Today was no different.
The basketball court sat right along the path to the cafeteria. As usual, a crowd of girls was shrieking Parker's name, their cheers ringing in my ears. The familiar thud of the ball hitting the pavement sent my instincts kicking in—I lifted my arm to shield my head and bolted.
Too slow.
"Bang—"
But the impact never came.
Instead, I turned and froze.
Luke had appeared out of nowhere, throwing himself in front of me just in time. The ball slammed into his shoulder blade before bouncing uselessly to the ground.
Parker stormed over in seconds, his voice icy.
"What's your problem, Luke?"
I hesitated, debating whether I should walk him to the nurse's office.
But Luke just flashed me that easy, careless grin of his. "Don't worry about it. I'm tough—I can handle it."
"What's your problem?"
Parker's voice cut in, sharp and accusing. He was glaring at Luke.
Luke's smile vanished. Slowly, he shot back, "What's your problem?"
"Why'd you hit her with the ball?"
Parker faltered for a second before scoffing. "...What's it to you?"
"I'm her desk partner."
Parker's expression twisted—something unreadable flickered in his eyes. Then he turned that mocking smirk on me. "Wow. Charming."
Luke stepped between us. "Cut it out, Parker. Don't be an idiot."
A beat passed. Then Parker's lips curled. "What, you like her or something?"
Parker always looked at me like that—like he'd already won.
Like I wasn't just his childhood friend, or the person he claimed to hate the most, but something he owned.
Luke didn't budge. "Your families have known each other for years. You shouldn't—"
"It's more than that," Parker cut in, laughing darkly. "Way more. Wanna hear?"
My stomach dropped.
Too late.
Parker shoved Luke back and spat out each word like a knife:
"She gave me her first kiss. Changed schools for me. Even wrote me some pathetic love letter about how obsessed she was. So tell me—what the hell are you?"
