Briella's face was cold. "Even if I had known, I wouldn't have kept it."
Pain clouded Sheldon's eyes. "I know. I know everything."
He had done unforgivable things. How could he ever expect Briella to have his child? Sheldon rubbed his face before asking, "How's your kidney? You need to take care of yourself after surgery. Don't do anything reckless again. I won't be here next time. You might not be so lucky."
Briella found his words ironic. "As long as you're not around, my luck won't be bad."
Sheldon let out a bitter laugh. "That's true."
He stood up and took a step forward, but Briella immediately backed away, ready to run at any moment. Sheldon slowed his steps and stopped two paces away from her. "Baby, I'm leaving.""
Briella wasn't sure whether to believe him. He raised his hand, wanting to touch her hair, but she avoided him. His hand fell limply to his side. "I always thought that as long as I loved you, we could be together. Even if you hated me, as long as you stayed by my side, that was enough."
"But when I held you in my arms and felt your warmth slipping away when I watched your life fading before my eyes ... I finally understood. Nothing matters more than you being safe and well. I think, in that moment, I finally understood what love really is. It's not possession or control. It's hoping you live a good life, free from harm."
It was hard to believe that the man who had been so obsessive just a month ago could say these words now. Briella studied his face and, for the first time, saw a hint of gentleness there. Sheldon noticed her gaze and chuckled softly. But soon, his laughter faded and his eyes darkened as he stared at her as if trying to etch her image into his soul. "Baby, this time, I'm not lying. I'm sorry ... for everything. I know you won't believe me, but I love you. Lastly, I hope you shine brightly and stand unmatched in this world."
He didn't say goodbye and neither did she. As he turned away, tears silently streamed down her face. His once towering figure seemed hunched as if he had lost all his strength and vitality. Briella watched him disappear, feeling an overwhelming sense of relief. But at the same time, it felt like something had been pulled from her, leaving a hollow space inside. She stood there, dazed, unable to put her feelings into words.
Jared approached and saw her lost in thought. "His flight is tomorrow afternoon. Do you want to go see him off?"
Briella shook her head. They were never meant for a farewell like that. This was enough.
