It was late at night when Thomas came back.
As soon as he entered the door,he hugged and coaxed me softly."Sorry, baby,I was busy with a meeting today and forgot it was our anniversary."
His clothes were thin in the summer and his collar was slightly open. The old and new kisses and scratches on his chest hurt my eyes intensely.
Was he busy with meetings or busy fooling around with Jennie Anderson?
I didn't question him, just gently pushed him away.
Thomas was taken aback momentarily, then took out a box from his pocket.
"I actually prepared a gift a long time ago.Don't be mad anymore,Honey.Okay?
Inside the box was a beautiful designer silk scarf.
Thomas personally tied it around my neck, smiling and saying,"Baby, you look so beautiful."
I touched the smooth fabric,a dense ache spreading through my heart.
I saw a post on Jennie's social media just an hour ago.
She showed off a luxury bag worth millions of dollars that her boyfriend bought her.
And this scarf was just a complimentary item that came with her bag.
In Thomas's eyes,I was only worth a free gift.
I raised my hand, took off the scarf and casually tossed it onto the sofa.
Thomas frowned."What's wrong?Don't you like it?"
Before I could answer,he slapped his forehead as if blaming himself.
"My mistake. How could I only give you a scarf on such an important day like our anniversary?"
"How about this? There's an auction tomorrow night.Let's go together and bid on whatever catches your eye!"
He was always like this.
For the past seven years, whenever I got upset,he'd always blame himself and go out of his way to make it up to me.
He used to look at me like I was his whole world.I was foolish enough to believe he loved me just as much as I loved him.
That was why I never asked for much.As long as he coaxed me a little,I'd instantly forgive him.
Even when we argued,a small gift was all it took to bring a smile back to my face.
I thought it was a mutual devotion, but I eventually realized that only my feelings were genuine.
Meanwhile,he was a masterfully skilled liar.
The next day,Thomas was busy preparing for the auction early in the morning.
I had no intention of going, but he had already prepared clothes and shoes for me and helped me get dressed.
He was always paying attention to my emotions when we arrived at the venue.
Until Jennie came to stand in front of us.
"Sharon,do you mind if I sit here?"
She pointed to the seat next to Thomas,a blatant provocation in her eyes.
Before I could speak,Thomas's face darkened."If you can't figure out your place,go home and stay there."
Jennie pouted, her fingers twisting the hem of her clothes, looking significantly wronged.
"I'm sorry,Sharon.I'm just used to sitting next to Thomas.If you're unhappy,I'll leave."
She moved to leave and I saw Thomas's fist on his knee suddenly clench.
He must be heartbroken to act cruelly towards his beloved secretary in front of me,right?
I chuckled humorlessly."I don't mind,sit down."
Jennie sat down contentedly, leaning most of her body towards Thomas, disregarding my presence.
I pretended not to see.
Thomas frowned at me,a hint of strangeness in his eyes.
After all,I'd always been the jealous type.I'd make a scene whenever he got too close to another woman.
I'd confronted him about it more than once, especially when Jennie used to message him outside of work.
Now,I actually allowed Jennie to sit next to him with no emotion on my face.
Thomas opened his mouth as if wanting to say something.
But at that moment, the host announced the start of the auction.
He had no choice but to hand me the auction catalog, his eyes full of doting affection."See if there's anything you like."
I wasn't interested and didn't see anything I liked throughout the event.
Until the last item was unveiled.A sudden joy filled me.
"I want this!"
