Thomas's frown relaxed as if he was glad to finally find something to coax me.
"Okay,no matter how much it costs,I will definitely buy this painting and give it to you!"
The painting's starting price was not high. After two rounds of bidding, only Thomas remained holding on.
Just as it seemed the painting would fall into his hands,Jennie raised her paddle."One point two million."
He explained as our three gazes met,"This painting depicts a family of three.I like it."
"Sharon wants this painting,"Thomas warned.
His blatant favoritism towards me caused a flicker of hurt across Jennie's eyes.
She bit her lip and looked down, speaking pitifully."My son would probably like it too."
My sister's child, raised under her name for eight years, had ultimately become a tool for her to manipulate Thomas.
Thomas froze, his handsome face etched with struggle.
After a long moment,he turned to me."Sharon, let Jennie have this painting."
His unquestionable tone easily distinguished the weight he placed on Jennie and me.
My heart clenched tight."But this painting belonged to my mom."
Thomas's expression faltered,clearly wavering.
Sadly,it was only a moment before he reasoned with me."I know you want to have children with me and this painting is a good omen."
"But we're not even married yet.Keeping it doesn't really make sense.Jennie already has a child. She needs it more."
He put down the bidding paddle and no longer intended to bid.
My eyes burned and I felt a painful tightness in my chest.
Over the years,I'd pawned many of my parents'belongings to support his business.
He had once promised me that he would retrieve them all for me,in their original condition,no matter how much effort or money it took.
Yet now,he wanted me to concede just because Jennie said she liked it.
The things I cherished had become worthless junk in his eyes.
A gloomy smile touched my lips and I raised my own paddle."One point five million."
Neither Thomas nor Jennie expected me to bid.
After a brief moment of stunned silence,Jennie increased her offer to one point eight million.
Thomas frowned, displeasure evident on his face."Sharon, don't be like this.Be reasonable."
For seven whole years,I was obedient and reasonable enough.
Still, what did I get in return?
It was finding out he had an eight-year-old son after I had painstakingly furnished our future home piece by piece.
It was him who resolutely chose that canary over me.
I ignored his rising anger and competed with Jennie all the way, raising the price to three million.
The tension in the room was electric.People whispered among themselves, amused by the love triangle playing out in front of them.
Thomas'face was now ashen.Suddenly,he raised Jennie's paddle."Five million!"
At the same time,he made a blank check bidding gesture.
It meant that no matter how much I bid tonight,he would follow to the end.
He was determined to take my mother's belongings and give them to Jennie.
The room fell silent.
So quiet I could almost hear the sound of my heart tearing apart.
Thomas looked at me."Sharon, stop making a scene."
Was I really making a scene?
I just wanted to reclaim something that belonged to my mother.
I stared at how he shielded Jennie and let out a helpless laugh. Then,I slowly lowered my paddle.
As I left,Jennie cooed sweetly,"The painting's really heavy,Thomas. Can you help me carry it home?"
Thomas looked at me,clearly torn.
I avoided his gaze and walked to the curb to hail a cab.
He chased after me,then grabbed my arm.
"She's just a girl.Carrying something that big isn't safe.Go home first,I'll be back soon."
The"girl"he spoke of was three years older than I.
I shook off his hand and replied flatly,"Mm."
