                    That night,Thomas didn't come home.
He told me there was an urgent matter at the company, but I received a video from Jennie.
In it,Thomas played games with his eight-year-old son while Jennie cheered them on from the side.
The scene was warm and loving, exactly what a family I had imagined countless times would look like.
Still,we would no longer have a home.
The next day,I contacted a second-hand furniture company and sold all the new furniture in our house.
Thomas rushed back after receiving the news,a panicked look on his face.
"Weren't these all things you carefully picked out?Why do you suddenly want to sell them?"
I replied flatly,"I don't like them anymore."
Thomas frowned,puzzled.
When I was choosing the furniture,my anticipation and happiness were apparent. How could I dislike them after just a few days?
He couldn't figure it out and after noticing nothing on my face,he didn't ask any further questions.
Then my phone dinged along with a$7000 transfer notification.
I looked up,confused.
Thomas pulled me into his arms."If you don't like it,pick new stuff.Spend as much as you want.If it's not enough, just tell me."
The specific amount held his affection.
Sadly, this affection has already been doubled for Jennie.
On her social media, her boyfriend had transferred her seven thousand dollars as compensation for being unable to accompany her to choose her wedding dress in person.
The same numbers, but worlds apart in meaning.
I accepted the money but didn't buy any new furniture. Two days later,I also sold the house.
Thomas stormed in,demanding answers."You sold the house, too?Sharon, what are you even trying to do?"
I looked him in the eye."We're not getting married anymore. So,what's the point of keeping a wedding house?"
Anger flashed across his face."Says who?I…"
He cut himself off.
I pulled out my phone and showed him the tabloid headlines.
There were photos of him and Jennie taking the child on a trip together, which led to reports that he'd been secretly married for years and had a happy little family.
It had been three days since the news broke. He hadn't said a word about it.
Thomas was speechless.
After a while,he muttered,"The media exaggerated it.I just gave them a lift to the lake, that's all."
Even now,he still thought I was stupid.
He just wanted to keep me around until I handed over the formula, draining every last bit of value from me.
I let out a cold laugh and said deliberately,"That kid looks a lot like you.Anyone would think he's your son."
Thomas quickly denied it."No way!"
"We've been together for seven years. If I had a kid, wouldn't you be the first to know?"
I didn't miss the flicker of guilt in his eyes, but I couldn't be bothered to call him out.
He reached for my hand."Fine, sell the house if you want.I thought it was too small anyway. We'll just buy a bigger one."
He ignored my resistance and dragged me to the car, probably terrified I'd start asking more questions about the kid and Jennie.
However,as destiny would have it,we ran across the supposed mother and son as soon as we exited the garage.
They were going to the mall the same way we were.
Thomas let them get in the car.
The child called out affectionately,"Daddy Thomas."
Thomas quickly explained,"Kids don't know any better. They just say things.Sharon, don't overthink it."
Jennie chimed in with a sarcastic tone,"That's right. It's all because Thomas is too good to us.The child sees him as his own father."
I turned my head to look out the window."Whatever."
The little boy chattered about how good Thomas was to him and Jennie the whole way.
Jennie pretended to scold him,but her words were full of smugness.
Thomas said very little, but I could occasionally feel his gaze on me.
I was annoyed by his staring and turned to tell him to focus on driving.
At that moment,a runaway truck came speeding towards us.
"Careful!"
I cried out in alarm.
The child and Jennie screamed in fright.
Thomas's face turned pale and he swerved the steering wheel sharply.
Still,it was too late.
The truck slammed into us.I was thrown forward and then snapped back hard against the seatbelt.Pain exploded all over my body.
Thomas, still shaken, lunged over and hugged me."Sharon, how are you?Are you alright?"
The worry and lingering fear in his voice were so genuine. It was as if he truly loved me.
I struggled to open my mouth but coughed up blood.
Thomas was terrified. His hands trembled uncontrollably as he dialed the emergency number.
"Sharon,hold on!The ambulance is coming soon.Don't sleep,listen to me."
Through the bloody haze,I stared at his red-rimmed eyes,a moment of utter confusion washing over me.
The ambulance arrived quickly and Thomas was about to carry me into it.
Just then,Jennie's tearful voice came from nearby.
"Thomas,come quick!Hunter,he's not moving!He fainted!"
Thomas's steps faltered.
After a few seconds of hesitation,he put me down and instead picked up the child, rushing towards the ambulance.
"Doctor,save him!Hurry!"
Jennie followed, swaying and falling into his arms.
"Thomas,my head is spinning."
Thomas held her tightly."It's okay. We'll go to the hospital right away."
Jennie sobbed."But what about Sharon? There's no more room in the ambulance."
Thomas and I,covered in blood, met each other's eyes.
In his gaze,I saw an unprecedented struggle.
I really wanted to tell him that Jennie and the child hadn't been seriously injured because they were sat on the back.
When I saw him turn his face away,I suddenly lost the desire to speak.
I heard him say in my dazed state."Sharon,Jennie and the child are more important.Wait a little longer."
He left me severely injured, then sped away with them.
The world turned red as blood blurred my vision, while my numb heart twisted painfully.
I bent over, clutching the fabric over my chest and sank into the darkness with it.
