I woke up in the evening to the nurse changing my IV drip.
She asked where my family was and I shook my head."I don't have any family."
The nurse sighed."That's life, huh?Same people, different fates.Look at Mrs.Sullivan next door, just scraped her knee and her husband's been doting on her like she's made of glass."
The other nurses in the room all looked a little envious.
"When I first came in,I saw Mr.Sullivan feeding her soup himself,"one of them said.
"I wonder when their wedding will be,"another chimed in.
As they began imagining the perfect wedding between Thomas and Jennie,I turned my head and closed my eyes.
The pain in my body felt like it was crushing the air out of my lungs.
The next time I woke up,Thomas was sitting by my bedside.
When he saw my eyes open, his tired face lit up with a smile.
"Thank God you're finally awake!Do you know how worried I've been all night?"
I watched him put on his act.My heart felt nothing.
His smile faltered."Why aren't you saying anything? Are you mad I didn't save you first?"
He leaned down and kissed my forehead as he spoke, his apology sounding sincere and touching.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart. The boy was in critical condition.I had to make a choice."
"You're such a kind person.You'll forgive me,right?"
How"critical"was it,really?
Was a scraped knee more urgent than the injuries covering my entire body?
Was her little fainting spell more life-threatening than me nearly dying?
My voice was cold."Shouldn't you be with them?"
"They are discharged from the hospital.Don't worry.I will only take care of you during this time,"replied Thomas.
It turned out that Jennie didn't need him anymore,so it was my turn.
I smiled bitterly and closed my eyes, not wanting to speak anymore.
Thomas wasn't annoyed and stayed by my side, never leaving.
He was as attentive to me as he said he would be,caring for me in every possible way.
Anyone who didn't know would have thought he was deeply in love with me.
Only I knew that his Oscar-worthy performance was solely for the sake of the upcoming press conference.
The reason was simple:I overheard him on the phone checking the event's details yesterday, focusing on the formula I hadn't yet handed over.
"Sharon insists on announcing it at the press conference. There's no use rushing her now.Let's just wait,"he said.
This"wait"lasted until I was discharged from the hospital.
During this period,he had been constantly attending to my needs. With company matters piling up,he rushed off to deal with them.
Before leaving,he hugged me reluctantly.
"Baby,I'm going to the company to handle some work.Be good and wait for me at home."
"If you're bored, take a look at the property brochures. We still haven't settled on our future home."
After rambling for a while,he finally got to the point.
"Oh right.About the formula,I heard from your assistant that it's been sent to you?"
I nodded.
Thomas was overjoyed."Great!Let me see it."
I ignored his enthusiasm."There are still some details that need improvement.I'll talk about it after studying it properly these days."
Thomas frowned."Why isn't it finished yet?It won't delay the press conference,will it?"
He didn't care whether my current physical condition could handle the experiments;he only cared about the formula.
My heart felt heavy, but I assured him it wouldn't.
Thomas beamed and hugged me tightly for a few seconds before leaving.
After he left,I began to clear out the memories in our home.
These were inexpensive little gifts from before we started the business and extravagant but insincere luxury goods from after our success.
I burned what needed burning and sold what could be sold.
While cleaning the study,an old notebook fell out of a cabinet.
Thomas used to keep a diary. He'd stopped once work got busy.
I opened the diary. The dates were so old, dating back to when he and my sister were in love.
It turned out that they were childhood friends who grew up in the same orphanage. My sister was adopted by my parents, while he stayed there alone.
After they reunited, they quickly fell in love.
He truly loved my sister;the fervent passion of a young man was evident in every line.
Until they met our parents.
My parents were firmly against their relationship and it hit them hard.
However,my sister was brave. She gave up everything just to be with him.
Their life was poor, but they were happy.
Everything was ruined on my birthday.
My sister died and Thomas was depressed.
The language in the diary became chaotic and incoherent.
I didn't continue reading. When I returned the diary,I inadvertently flipped to the last page.
The content inside made the blood in my whole body suddenly freeze.
They killed Yolanda.I got revenge for her.She died in a car crash and so did they. That's fair.
Eight years ago,my parents died in a car crash.
A terrifying thought took root in my mind.I started shaking uncontrollably.
Sharon didn't die.She survived,but why?
The sky has fallen. The doctor said Hunter has a genetic disease. What should I do?Why is God so cruel to me?
Right,Yolanda said that Sharon has a talent for pharmaceutical development.Maybe she can help me.
The distorted handwriting blurred with my tears as I sank to the corner of the wall.
Sharon is such a fool. She actually fell in love with me,ha-ha.People are easiest to manipulate when they're vulnerable.
The diary stopped here and my soul shattered into pieces.
The thing that moved me the most was when my parents passed away.Thomas stayed by my side day and night.
He helped me with their funeral arrangements, took me out to clear my head and encouraged me to rekindle my hope for life.
It turned out that he was the one who caused all of this!
I had fallen head over heels for my enemy, stepping on the souls of my deceased parents to indulge in what I thought was love.
He watched my deep affection, mocking my foolishness and celebrating his revenge plan.
Shock, despair, anger, all sorts of emotions rushed towards me.
I clutched my chest,breathing heavily.
I didn't know how long it was before the unbearable grief and indignation subsided slightly.
My fingers trembling,I took out my phone and redialed Jeremy's number.
"Uncle, could you please come back sooner?"
