Jeremy Felton returned the next day and we arranged to meet at a cafe.
He lounged back lazily in his chair, the top three buttons of his black shirt undone. His well-defined fingers slid the contract across the table toward me.
"Eighty percent?Uncle, this isn't what we agreed on."
I raised an eyebrow after seeing the profit split in the contract.
Jeremy propped his chin up with one hand."Fifty percent is what you wanted. The extra thirty percent is from me."
"If the new drug is well-received after its launch,I'll give you an additional ten percent of Felton Corporation's shares."
My eyes widened."This drug…it's not worth that much."
The corners of his lips lifted slightly."But you are."
I paused, something strange stirring in my chest.
Why did it feel like this man was always making unprofitable deals with me?
Jeremy tapped his fingers lightly on the table."But before you sign,I have one condition."
That's more like it!
I inexplicably felt a sense of relief."Go ahead."
Jeremy's expression turned serious."Don't call me uncle.Although I'm friends with your mother,I'm not that old."
I obediently changed my address."Mr.Felton."
He chuckled helplessly."Is my name that hard to say?"
I remained silent,feeling awkward.
He was equivalent to an elder in my heart and the words just wouldn't come out.
Jeremy sighed."Forget it,let's take it slow."
He uncapped the pen and passed it to me,the nib pointed in my direction.
I signed my name and handed over this formula that had been developed for seven years to Felton Corporation.
Before I left,he called me,saying I had lost weight.A hint of heartache and probing flickered in his dark eyes.
"Sharon,if Thomas can't take good care of you, then we don't need him anymore, okay?"
I smiled."Almost there."
When I returned home,Thomas was unexpectedly sitting in the living room, his face extremely unpleasant.
"Were you at the lab?Is the formula finalized?"
Instead of answering,I asked,"What's wrong?"
Thomas said irritably,"Felton Corporation just announced that it will hold a press conference on the same day as us to announce the formula of targeted drugs for the same genetic disease.Even the location is the same!"
"That old fogey Jeremy Felton, why does he always go against me!"
I glanced at my phone. As expected,Felton Corporation had indeed released an announcement ten minutes ago.
Now,the internet was full of news about Felton Corporation, completely overshadowing Thomas'company.
Thomas gripped my shoulders."Sharon, your formula is definitely flawless, right?"
I nodded.
It was flawless, but it had nothing to do with him.
Thomas calmed down, letting out a disdainful sneer.
"That's good!I've never heard of Felton Corporation having any research in this area.Jeremy is just deliberately trying to disgust me."
"That old bastard,I'm going to slap him in the face this time!"
After saying that,he finally noticed the things in my hand."What's that you're holding?"
I hid the contract behind my back."Supplementary information for the formula."
Thomas didn't suspect anything and kept urging me to perfect the formula.
After a while, maybe realizing he'd come off too calculating,he casually asked,"Are you feeling unwell?"
I shook my head coldly.
Thomas put his arm around me,painting a rosy picture."We're going to spend our whole lives together. You must tell me if you feel uncomfortable."
A lifetime?
Didn't he feel any guilt when he said that?
I jabbed right at his heart."Then, how about we announce our wedding date at the press conference too?"
His expression froze."That day's all about the formula.Sharon, don't be unreasonable."
It was the answer I expected and my heart didn't waver at all.
Thomas tried to smooth things over."Our wedding is a big deal.We need to choose a special day to announce it to everyone."
I gave an indifferent"hmm"and turned to go back to my room.
