The night before the press conference,I cleared out everything in the house that belonged to me.
Thomas looked confused and asked why.I lowered my gaze and replied,"They're old.No point keeping them."
There was nothing wrong with what I said.
However, suspicion still lingered in his eyes.
Maybe he remembered how cold I'd been lately because he leaned in to kiss me.
A wave of nausea hit me and I quickly pulled away.
His doubt deepened for a second and then he seemed to convince himself otherwise.
"I know I've been busy with work and neglecting you.Once the formula is announced and the new drug hits the market,I'll make it up to you."
We were so close to the finish line that I didn't want anything messing it up.
I swallowed my disgust and said,"Okay."
The next day,I was woken up early by a phone call.
On the other end,I could hear Jeremy's lazy voice.
"Technically, you could've slept in longer, but the stylist and the dress are already on their way.Don't forget to let them in."
He'd specially arranged for a custom gown for the event.
I dressed up like a princess escaping the swamp.
When Thomas came out in his suit and saw me,his brow creased slightly.
"You're not the main speaker today.Don't you think you're a little overdressed?Might steal the spotlight."
It was my formula, yet he said I wasn't the main speaker.
How absurd.
I played along with a sweet smile."There'll be a lot of media there.I have to explain the formula, right?I can't embarrass you."
He seemed pleased with that answer.
He was just about to speak when his phone rang.I clearly heard Jennie's sugary voice.
"Thomas,I'm ready! The dress you picked is gorgeous!"
Worried that I'd steal the spotlight, but he personally picked out her dress.
No surprise there.
He hung up and said without even thinking,"Jennie's dress is a bit hard to move in.I'll go pick her up.You head to the venue first."
Yet I was standing right there,in a dress,too.
I curved my lips in mockery."Sure."
Thomas turned and walked out.
At the door,he noticed my suitcase.
He stopped in his tracks."It's not like you're not coming back. Why are you packing?"
As he spoke,he reached out to check it.My heart tightened and I quickly snatched it away.
Inside was the contract I signed with Jeremy and the"gift"I'd prepared.
He looked at me suspiciously."Are you hiding something from me?"
I kept my expression calm."It's not luggage. It's the formula and sample meds.I don't trust anyone else to handle them."
His doubts vanished."It's good to see you taking it so seriously."
Jennie messaged again, rushing him.He left in a hurry.
Twenty minutes later, she sent me a photo.
Like a gentleman,Thomas held up the hem of her dress for her.
I blocked her. Then I grabbed my suitcase, left the house key behind and stepped into the Maybach Jeremy sent for me.
Soft music played inside the car and the place I'd called home for the last seven years faded in the rearview mirror.
I looked at the familiar street scenes outside the window, severing the last trace of emotion.
Thomas, next,it's your turn to repay what you owe me.
